◇ Kelpie Moodboard ◇

Across Europe, particularly in Wales, Scandinavia and Scotland, there are tales of a “water horse”, creatures that assume equine form who then lure mortals to them.  Using these myths, I did my own take on the kelpie. Rather than just be a simple horse, I wanted to mix unsettling bits into it, creating a blend of shark, crocodile and horse features to create something that be familiar enough, yet alien enough, to be unnerving.

Kelpies represent a good, low level threat for a party and they’re able to be scaled up for more danger or higher skilled groups.  They can find their way into any city on a coastline, along any river, in any marshland or simply houses significant man-made lakes used in parks. Their hostile nature makes them easy to fight, but the risk and reward of a character being able to ride and then control a kelpie adds an extra avenue for players to explore beyond simple combat.
