Shades: Three
“Graise.”
A soft touch is felt on my cheek. My body throbs with pain, every inch of my skin blazing with thrills of fire. I groan.
A gentle shake vibrates through my body. “Graise,” my name is called again, softly as if just a whisper in my ear. My eyes drowsily flutter open, the only sight a beautiful forest green staring down at me. As soon as the sight is there it’s gone again, the darkness returing.
“No, stay with me. Open your eyes Graise.” The voice echoes through my mind. My eyes struggle to follow their orders, fighting to breach the light again. Sirens are heard in the distance, their sound slightly muffled through my hazed mind. I continue my battle, clutching onto the words of the gentle voice.
“Graise.” My name is called again just before I feel my body being lifted and I succumb to the darkness…
“Graise!”
The frantic voice echoes through my brain. I look around in search of the source.
“Graise!”
I try to move but my feet won’t comply.
“Graise!”
My mind shouts demands at my stubborn limbs but to no prevail.
“G-G-Graise!”
I start to panic. I try to scream but nothing comes out. A darkness clouds my vision, slowly consuming me. I continue to panic, trying to call for help. Just as the darkness is about to consume me a familiar voice pulls me from my dreaming state.
“She’s not awake.”
My mind tries to decipher their words.
“I need to know that she is okay.”
Excitement thrills through my body at the muffled tone. I want to open my eyes, make my presence known but I can’t-a stronger force seals me in this floating state.
“She is fine.”
“Let me see her.” The voice demands.
“She’s not awake.”
A deep sigh is heard. “Fine, but I will be seeing her soon though.”
I hear footsteps just before I fall back into my sedated world…
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Steady beats sound around me. I groan in annoyance though wince soon after as a throbbing head ache breaches. Another groan escapes my lips, this time one of pain.
“Gray.” A muffled voice sighs in what sounds like relief. My brows curl together, my mind working to open my eyes and see who the stranger is. Drowsily, my eye lids flutter open. Blurs of white cloud my vision. I cringe, the light blinding my sensitive eyes.
“W-where am I?” My voice is horse and weak. I try to sit up, only prevocing the pounding in my head.
“Shh, stay down. You’re okay you’re just in the hospital.” A familiar voice assures from next to me. I turn towards the source, blinking away the bright blur.
“Jakey,” I smile lazily at him. He returns the gesture, his eyes curling in amusement.
“Glad to see your okay Graisie.” He teases. I breath out a small laugh, only to wince in pain seconds later. “The doctor said you would have a head ache when you woke up,” Jake gives me a simpathetic look, his face all the sudden turning serious-something I am not used to.
“S'not too bad.” I try to assure him. The look on his face softens. “What h-happened? W-why am I in a hospital?” My head turns to glance around the strange room in confusion.
“I’ll tell you later, now you need to rest up.” Jake leans forward and presses a light kiss to my forehead.
“W-will you be here when I wake up?”
Jake nods. “Of course babe, I’m not going anywhere.”
“Night Jakey.” I sigh, closing my eyes.
“Goodnight Gray.”
A stale scent filled my nostrils. I cringed at the horrid scent. It took me a second to remember where exactly I was, then after opening my eyes my memories were confirmed. Hospital.
I’d always hated these places. Not that I’d ever had sad memories, just the thought of IV’s plugged into my skin and sick patience never appealed to me. Not to mention the annoying a.ss constant of machines beeping away.
My eyes looked curiously around the room. White lined every inch of the walls and floors, creating a sickening sense of over starolization. I tried to push my body up, immediately regreting the motion as a horrid pounding pulsed through my head. My face contorted in an uncomfortable pain. I again tried to pull myself from the white sheets, this time ignoring the throbbing in my head begging me to lay back down. A sudden dizziness spun through my head as I got to my feet, I held onto the railing of the bed as the flashes slowly died away. I walked stiffly over to the bathroom, tugging the annoying IV chords along with me. My eyes widened as I took in my appearance.
Holy s.hit
My hair was a greesed mess, sticking up and knotted in every manner possible. My whole face looked pale and my eyes sported dark circles. But the thing that caught my attention was the two bandaids at the top of my forehead. I pulled the tan tape off my skin to reveal a large cut lined with an angry purple bruise.
This would explain my head ache.
After another examination at the cut I decided that I was greatly in need of a shower. I hissed in pain as the needle of the IV was pulled from my skin. God I hate needles.
The water was warm and welcoming under my palms. I quickly undressed and stepped into the white shower. A sigh fell from my lips as the water wet my skin. I completely submerged myself in its sweet sooth. I stood there for a good five minutes before actually trying to accomplish anything. I wasn’t in any rush really, I was still trying to figure everything out and the temperature was helping derail every blur.
Softly I messaged the shampoo through my mangled dark locks. My eye fell closed at the soothing feel. I continued on, grabbing the soap and caressing it against my dirty skin until I felt new and clean. Finally after what I felt was hours I decided to leave the other patience some water and reluctantly get out. I immediately missed the sweet warmth. Something I could never understand about bathrooms was how my water could be so hot and steamy yet the space beyond my shower was dreadfully cold. Chills erupted on my freshly washed skin as I swiped a towel down it, collecting the moisture away. I pulled on my horrid white gown and pulled open the door to my room.
“You know, you weren’t supposed to take a shower with that cut.” Jake says, seated in the doctors roll chair spinning in circles.
“A little water never hurt anything.” I shrug. He stops his spinning and gives me a playful glare.
“I see you took out the IV’s too?” He quirks an eye brow at me. I toss back the look. “Problem?”
He rolls his eyes. “You never like to follow rules do you Gray?”
I shake my head. “While we are at twenty questions why am I here?” I ask the question that has been on my mind since I woke up.
Jakes face turns serious. “You were almost hit by a taxi.”
My eyes widen in shock. Almost hit by a taxi?
“Almost?”
“Someone pushed you out of the way.”
The frantic voice shouting my name echoes through my mind. Blurs of that night flash through my mind. Looking for the source but finding the yellow blur coming towards me. “Who?”
“His name was-”
“Knock knock.” A voice interupts Jake before he can finish. I look at the door to find a formally dressed man with a white lab coat and clip board. “How are you feeling today Miss Todd?”
“F-fine, who are you?” I question.
“Oh I’m sorry. I’m Doctor Payne.” The man introduces with a warm smile, his voice holding a thick accent I didn’t catch before. I return the smile and take a seat on the bed, feeling sort of awkward just standing there.
Doctor Payne takes a longing glance at Jake who sits in his chair, but takes a seat at the end of the bed without a word.
“So, how is your head?” He questions.
“I have a headache.” I inform.
He nods with a simpathetic smile. “That’s normal, it should wear off within a couple of days.” He assures. “You have a minor concussion so you might experience some dizziness and nausea. Just be sure to take things easy for a few days.” He instructs.
“Okay.”
“Alright, I am going to get you a prescription that I would like you to take to speed up your healing and then you are free to go Miss Todd.” Doctor Payne informed with a warm smile.
“Thank you Doctor Payne.”
“You are very welcome love.” With that he walked out the door.
“Sort of a weird name for a doctor, yeah?” Jake said immediately after the door closed.
“Shut up Jake.”
“What! I’m just saying, I mean Doctor Payne? Sounds kind of kinky.” He shrugged. I scoffed at him.
“You’re so nasty.” He chuckled at my disgusted reaction.
“I think you like him.” He accused.
“I do not!” I defend.
“You want to have some fun with Dr. Payne don’t you Graisie?” He teased in a mocking tone. My cheeks heated in embarrassment and I turned my head away from him.
“Just get me some clothes so I can take this d.amn dress off.” I demand.
“Sure you don’t want Dr. Payne to do that for you?”
“Jake!” I screech and shove him away, causing him to fall out of the roll chair. Jake glares at me, causing me to laugh only to regret it seconds later as I cringe in pain.
“Owe.”
Jake chuckles at my reaction and stands up.
“That’ll teach you not to laugh at me.” He mumbles on his way out…
The next day was strange for me. I wasn’t in my usual rush to find something presentable to do with my hair or finding clean clothes-no I was sitting down at the kitchen table enjoying a steaming cup of black coffee and some hash browns Jake made me before he left for work. It was a nice change, relaxing having the silence all to myself instead of having to hear Tom’s annoying orders. I was enjoying my sick leave and I was surely going to stretch out this whole “minor concussion” thing for as long as I could. The more time I was given away from Tom, the better was how I saw it. And if jucing my luck dry was what it took then so be it. I was just happy to be home instead of walking in the freezing New York air.
A small knock sounds at my door, I set down my unfinished coffee and made my way to the door.
“Coming,” I called as a second knock sounded. Some people were just so impatient.
I looked through the peep hole to find a man dressed in blue pants and a heavy coat.
I pulled back the chain and greeted the strange man.
“Delivery for a Graisen Todd?” The man recited.
“Yes?”
“Here you are ma'am.” He smiled, handing me a vase of white roses wrapped in a forest green ribbon.
“Thank you.” I looked at the assortment in confusion.
“You’re welcome, have a lovely day.”
“Yeah, you too.” I bid then shut the door. After twisting the lock and pulling the chain through its slot I walked back to the kitchen, the vase of flowers in my hand.
I set the case down on the counter. My eyes caught on a small note buried in the bouquet. I picked the paper up curiously, hoping maybe it’s contents would give some hint as to who they were from.
“Meet me at Central Park at three p.m. ~HS”
I stared down at the words in confusion. Who was HS?

"Meet me at Central Park at three p.m. ~HS"
I stared down at the words in confusion. Who was HS?
Shades: Four
My eyes read and reread over the small card.
"Meet me at Central Part at 3 p.m. ~HS"
So many questions buzzed through my mind but the one that stuck out the most was should I go? For some crazy reason I wanted to. My curiosity was eating away at my logical side. Do I take the risk of meeting this mysterious 'HS' at Central Park?
Stupid. That is what I am. An idiot with no self control who is too curious. I should be at home resting up and taking advantage of this Tom-leave, as I called it, like I planned to but no I was sitting on a bench in Central Park with a hat and shades on-attempting to make myself a little less noticeable.
My leg bounced furiously in anticipation as I looked at all the faces of the people around me. I glanced down at my watch. '3:00' whoever 'HS' was should be here by now. This made my anxiety grow. What if this was a scheme? A joke to get me to come down here?
Somehow I knew this was not true. Or maybe I just hoped it wasn't true. I stole another glance down at the ticking device on my wrist. "3:05" now they were late. Or maybe they weren't. How was I to know? I didn't know who the hell this 'HS' person was!
I groan in annoyance with myself. This was all a big mistake, a waste of my Tom-leave and a waste of a headache.
Just as I was about to get up something caught my attention. A man dressed in a long black coat his hair styled in a messy quiff walking in the left entrance of the park. Another hard glance had my eyes widened. It wasn't just any man, no it was him. My mysterious Adonis from the café.
Was he 'HS'? I didn't allow myself the time to sleuth the topic. I quickly stood up, feeling slightly dizzy from the sudden move but shoved the feeling down and made my way to the park exit.
"Taxi!" I called, waving my hand through the air. A yellow car pulled up to the curve. I shoved myself inside before I could change my mind and gave him instructions to my destination.
The whole ride back I was restless with thoughts. I regreted fleeing like I had. I wish so bad to know if my assumptions were correct, if the man whom I had excepted terms about and initially tried to move out of my thoughts, had scent me flowers requesting I meet him. I should be scared that if it was him that he somehow knew where I lived, but I wasn't. I was intrigued, curious as to why he had wanted to see me and as to how he found out where I lived.
I spent that whole day devoured in thought. I made endless hypothesis, all coming to unanimous conclusions. I was so distracted I hadn't even heard the door open, signaling Jakes arrival.
"Graisie I'm home!" I jump as Jake's voice sounds through the foyer. "Hello my minor concussioned roomie."
"Do you know anyone by the name of 'HS'?" I ignore his mocking. Jakes face flashes with something..panic? The look is quickly brushed off his face and turned into his usual soft and eased face.
"N-no." I notice his hesitation. "Pretty flowers, who are they from?" He is quick to change the subject.
"HS." I say, watching him carefully. I eye him for a moment. He doesn't reach, remaining completely impassive.
"Strange." He comments innocently.
"Very." I agree. "How was your day working?"
"Lovely, actually stopped by the café at lunch. Tom wishes you a good recovery and hopes to see you by Monday." He says while looking through the fridge.
I scoff. "Jacka.ss."
"He really is, dont know why you still work there."
He has a point. I really don't have any other reason for working at Aroma Mocha except for the fact that I am paid decently enough and it is an easy job to do. Plus I love coffee.
"Because, I'm not going to find a more ideal uni job anywhere else in the city." I defend my helpless barista position.
"Very true." Jake nods in agreement.
"I made dinner you know." I say as he leans further into the fridge.
"Weally? Where is it?" He questioned, words muffled from the food he's shoved into his mouth.
"Well if your fat a.ss would wait a minute it's in the oven." I tease with a chuckle.
"I'm wungwy." He whines.
"I cannot understand a word you just said."
"I said I'm hungry." He makes sure to annunciate nice and clear. To prove his point further a pout droops on his face.
"Can't you wait five more minutes?" I ask, hoping to stall his impending starvation.
"No." He sticks his chin up and continues his task in the fridge.
"Jaccob Greene out of the fridge before you spoil your dinner!" I order in my best stern voice. He stops his useless sleuthing and shuts the black door. He's always hated when I called him Jaccob.
"Graisen Todd, are you trying to mother me?" Jake challenges. Pull the name game on me too eh Jakey?
"No?" I wasn't really sure of my own answer. Jake held my glare, further proving his challenge. I narrow my eyes at him, attempting at being intimidating.
"Five. Minutes." He finally gives in and with a dramatic sigh he leaves the kitchen. I silently pat myself on the back for winning our small stare down.
Rest. It was a sick joke. Resting implied that one was relaxed and at ease-I was far from either of those things. My mind was at an unease and I couldn't stop thinking about who the hell 'HS' was. It bothered me, too much and finally after the third day of glaring at those mocking white roses I threw them out. I couldn't stand their connivery. A plant knew more about 'HS' than I did!
I found myself going stir crazy. I actually was looking forward to going back to the café tomorrow. I was looking forward to it! What the hell was happening to me?
Here I was with the all this Tom-leave on my hands and I spent it cooped up in my apartment baking s.hit to keep my mind busy and still failing to not conjure up more theories. All I knew was I surely wasn't going to be late for work tomorrow concidering that waking up was not my problem, it was sleeping..
A voice. Annoying and unwelcome it echoed through my world of terrors. A shake vibrates through my mysterious world, then it's gone. The black I have become so acquainted with turned into the scorching light of the morning.
"Wakey wakey Graisie." Jakes voice was soft and playful. I groaned.
"Come on, time to go face Tom!" He teased. I again responded with a deep rumble in my throat. Jake chuckled.
"Lay with me?" I questioned in my best pitiful voice. He looked down at me with his bright grin.
"Two minutes then you have to get up." He sighed and climbed into my small twin. I smiled graciously and snuggled up closer to him. For some reason Jake was always so warm, while I on the other hand have always been cold natured. One hundred degree summers and I will be outside cuddled in a pea coat.
"Did you sleep better last night?" He questions, his voice lost all playfulness and now turned the serious I dread.
"No, but it'll get better." I sigh. I hoped he statement was true. Through the day I was wondering who HS was and through my nights I either lie restless or lost in the terrors of my accident. I sort of looked forward to them. They were the only clue I had as to who saved me, since for some reason everytime I asked Jake about it the subject was changed.
"That's the Graisie I know! So optimistic." He teasingly squeezed me tighter. I chuckled and brushed all obsessive thoughts away.
"Guess I should get up, I'll have to face Tom some time or another." I grumbled and pulled myself from the comfortable duvets..
Ten minutes later I was walking out of my bathroom freshly showered. After twisting my hair into a messy braid I pulled on a white long sleeve v-neck and some dark skinny jeans. I usually tended to favor season colors-darks in the colder months and lights during the warmer ones.
Breakfast was scarfed down and I was pulling on my jacket.
"I'm off to hell! Wish me luck!" I said, wrapping a scarf around my neck.
"Don't sound too excited now!" Jake teased.
"Bye Jakey!" I recited my usual goodbye.
"Laters Graisie." He called as I walked out the door and made my way to the cold.
By the time I made it to Aroma Mocha I had a killer headache and I was late.
"Graise-"
"I know I'm late I'm sorry. There was a lot street traffic and I am still having a lot of dizzy spells and-" I trail on a flustered rush.
"Gray, Gray calm down." Tom shushes me. "I'm not mad, I understand."
I sigh in relief. "Thanks Tom."
"Take a rest if you need to today, I will understand."
"Okay," I nod. I wasn't really planning on resting, I hadn't been abled to do that my whole four days off.
"Alright, front." he orders, his tone slightly less demanding than usual. I grab an apron and go to my station. Getting back into serving mode was difficult. I found myself growing frusterated, every timeI turned around I was grabbing a hold of a counter so I wouldn't fall over. I was really loathing this dizzy s.hit. It was pissing me off feeling so nauseous all the time.
"Afternoon Henry," I greet the old man.
"Graisen dear! I missed you yesterday!" He sets his paper down.
"Yeah, I was T-I mean sick leave." I catch myself.
"Hoping you're feeling better." He smiles at me warmly.
"I'm working on it." I sigh. "Coffee?"
"Yes please." I pour him a mug.
"I'll be back with your pastry." I smile then walk away to retrieve his usual. I've always enjoyed it when Henry comes in. He's so kind and he never fails to brighten my mood.
I turn around, grabbing the dish with a strawberry pastry, and start to make my back to Henry. I immediately bump into something, knocking the white dish from my hands. A large hand catches the play before it can fall.
"Oh sorry." I quickly apologize. My eyes slowly trail their way up from the unknown persons hands. A dark smoke grey suit, complimented with a forest green tie.
"Hello Graisen."
