Kelsie Brown • 19 • Dance instructor, barista at Starbucks
Kelsie had been dancing all her life. Her parents had always wanted her to do something in performance art, both of them being failed actors, so when 3 year old Kelsie refused to take off her tutu, they knew what they’d put her in. Every day after school, on weekends, even study hall and lunch breaks were devoted to her practicing. Being around pretty girls in leotards all day, it didn’t take long for Kelsie to notice the way that she looked at them was the same way that boys looked at her, but she never thought about it too much. Her career was a much more pressing concern for her than her sexuality.
She was 17, and semi-pro, when it became abundantly clear that she didn’t have what it took. It didn’t matter how hard she worked or how much she wanted it, she’d never have to “it” factor or the natural ability to be successful. The realization crushed her, as well as her parents. She’d already dropped out of high school to be a full time dancer, and her life suddenly had no direction. It took her two more years of trying desperately to improve herself before she faced the truth, that she’d never be the dancer she, or her parents, wanted her to be. Her parents were cold to her, she just didn’t put the work into her dancing, and all of her dance friends no longer had anything in common with her. With nothing tying her to her hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota, she got her GED and then moved to California, hoping to find a new dream.
With almost no savings, she got herself a shitty apartment in Suncrest, putting an add in the classifieds for a roommate. She got a job at Starbucks, and another teaching kids up to age 15 how to dance. Nothing serious like what she was doing just weeks before, but she was good enough to successfully teach girls for whom dancing was just an after school hobby. She’d like to get a more permanent, and well paying job, but with no sight of her vocation, that’s seeming a little difficult.
