Rie Nakajima, Cyclic. Installation Ikon Gallery (2018). Photograph by Stuart Whipps.
I visited the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham to see the Rie Nakajima exhibition, the installations were constructed with , found objects and made and installed in the space with in a few weeks. I enjoy this way of working and felt a connection to the work I was making ( one week to make work from random newspaper page)
I have been struggling for a way to include the 4mm steel wire that is hanging my large 3m x 2M canvas. Rie Nakajima includes the cabling in to the compositions of the works, upon reflecting on this I had found a possible solution to the steel cables hanging my work.
The steel cable I used is a collection of thinner cables wound together , all connected to each other, a statement I am trying to convey in my work, how things are all connected.

The infographic canvas is postioned in the centre of the back wall, I have postioned the centre of the canvas to be of a height that can be seen by the viewer and to be a focal point on entry to the foyer from the main entrance from the street. I am aware that a floating full size manakin will be suspended from the ceiling out of arms reach. the canvas must be of height that is below the suspended manakin. More work is needed, regarding the "C" clips that hold the canvas to the industrial red oxide gas tubing( blue cut tube as been split to make a c clip, I will replace these with transparent tube of a softer material). I have decided not to loop the canvas and pass the tube through it ( a standard way of fixing a canvas ). I want the canvas to be wrapped around the tubing to simulate an industrial process of printing large newspapers. The canvas is hung by 4mm steel wire and clamped with steel fasteners. For safety I will add another set of clamps to each of the wires. The cable is one continious length that passes from from one hanging bar through the inside of the tube and looped over the second hanging bar.The position of the canvas allows a clear line of sight from the entrance to the building.
