During my sophomore year at ACU, my roommate, Jon Gbor - an incredibly kind and brilliant Nigerian friend - told me this: “You will never understand the racism I see because you’re white.” I thought he was wrong. Of course I can! I’m aware! He said, “Have you ever been frisked?” I had no answer. Of course, I hadn’t. When we were driving back home to Bloomington, we were pulled over. Jonathan was driving. He was asked out of the car and frisked. Neither of the two additional white passengers were. I was one of them. I will never forget his face as he stared at me. When he got back in the car, I tried to apologize. He said, “Just don’t man.” We sat in silence for quite a while. I can’t understand - and there aren’t enough sorrys to make up for what so many of my friends have been through. Black, Hispanic, Asian, mixed... people of color. People first. We are all created equal. I’m sorry the way you’ve been treated. Jon was right. I don’t understand.
