lessons from graduate school

1. It’s been a long time since I’ve had the time to post on here. People used to tell me that I had too much time on my hands, and now I understand what they meant.

2. Research isn’t for everyone. I’ve learned that you can put a lot of work into something just to have everything crap out on you. To even have a chance to succeed, you have to understand your system, your model, everything that can fail with your experimental design, and hope that all of your instruments are working and even your own attention span, energy, and execution is there on that day. Sometimes you only have one shot to get things right, and other times you do have to do it again.

2a. I have a lot more patience to deal with things when they don’t go as expected. If we have to do things again just to make sure they are correct, you just have to do it!

3. I realized early on that when we are younger, we thrive on certainty i.e. there are facts that we know and we take comfort in those. When you are getting a PhD, you really have to thrive in that area in between certainty and uncertainty. I’ve come to be more comfortable not knowing something... but it does take a lot of work to get to the point where you know something is known (but you just don’t know it) versus when you find something no one else has ever reported before (and it’s your job to share that with the world). Your job is to shed light on something previously not well studied.

4. Science is supposed to be a linear process, but it really doesn’t work that way. There is this quote that life is lived forwards and analyzed backwards, and research is the same way. I work in a data-rich laboratory so we work with big data sets and different analytic approaches to extract information from studies and experiments. The hardest thing to do with hypothesis-free data-driven research is really identifying what your question really is. Most of the times we don’t know how to interpret our results without further experimentation or prior knowledge. If you can identify the relevant question that your data answers, then you can set up experiments to corroborate your findings. However, really understanding your results after just one experiment (no matter how much data you have) is almost impossible. The experimental follow-up adds context to your work and allows you to craft a story from the pieces of data you’ve collected. I can’t emphasize this enough.

5. Set up your work so that each milestone is something incrementally achievable. If you try to be too ambitious... you probably can’t do it all by yourself. Set up S.M.A.R.T. goals. Simple, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely goals. You don’t have to do everything all in one go. Pace yourself, and organize your thoughts and work so that you can take steps towards the bigger goal. (Dissertation chapters....... but really anything big you need to achieve).
