You could descend like rain, destroy like fire if you chose to. If you chose to.
Sandra Cisneros, from Loose Woman (via luthienne)
He wasn’t sure if he felt relieved or threatened by her comment. Either way he knew he didn’t want to find out the answer to his question anymore. He knew from the moment he had opened his mouth about the cuffs that he probably shouldn’t have said anything. He has had to free himself from cuffs before but two of the three times they were soft fluffy cuffs he just squeezed out of. “Uhh…Sort of.”
kenna looked at him expectantly considering the only thing that’s been moving the entire time was his mouth. that was of no use to her. “so...? are you going to help me get out of this damn thing or are you just going to talk me to death? if it’s the latter i prefer you stand a little over there,” she nodded toward the far corner of the alleyway, before turning her attention back to the cuffs, “i need to concentrate, and you yapping ain’t gonna do me no good..”
“don’t call me that,” he said again, this time, if anything, an order instead of a request. nicknames weren’t his thing, and while he wanted the money, he’d easily leave her in that alley at the third moose to leave her lips. will was a child in that way. he rolled his eyes, his finger quickly coming up to her lips in an annoyed and hasty effort to silence her. “shut up,” he whispered harshly, frustrated. “you’ll be fine,” he sarcastically reassured her with narrowed eyes, letting out a puff of air though his nose the moment the second cuff snapped open. as he expected– she made a break for it. but he wasn’t having any of it. she owed him money, and he wasn’t going to let her get away so easily. despite the fact running for it then was a terrible idea. so he wrapped his arms around the blonde’s midsection, pulling her back into the alley with the strength he had, knowing the stranger might fight his endeavors. he stepped back into the minimal shadows of the alley, the quick and heavy footsteps accompanied by the sound of static in radios coming dangerously close, nearly passing by. instinctively, will pressed a hand over her mouth, hoping to god she wouldn’t utter a single word in her protests. that’d be the end of them.
there was no question that there would be a rebellion on kenna’s behalf. with her arms pinned to her sides, she was already limited to very few opportunities to break his grip. and that was without consideration of the fact that her capture was significantly taller than she was and, with respect to the firm plate of muscle to which was her cage, somewhat more powerful. she could feel the weight of her lift the ground, as if she weighed little more than a rag doll, as the man retreated further into the blanket of darkness and kenna’s fight to escape became more desperate. but kenna was not deaf, and at the sound of the oncoming static, grunts and footfalls she went stiff and, if one dared say, shrank back a little further into his arms, despite it being her temporary prison. there was a fine line between bravery and stupidity and she knew when not to cross it. big burly men, darted past the mouth of the alleyway each swing of their arms spoke of power and pent up aggression and a vicious sort of violence that no police officer should ever inherit. they weren’t cops. but then she knew that already. and suddenly being in the stranger’s arm wasn’t the worse place she could be after all.

will raised a lone brow as if to say do you really want me to answer that? his vision flicked upward at the sound of commotion and familiar boots on pavement. with her response, he swiftly removed a pin from the inside of his coat. somethings he kept for, well– emergencies. he rolled his eyes at her tone and the finger to his chest, and he got to work on the cuffs around her wrists. ignoring her statement, he wiggled the pin this way and that, working the lock as well as he could remember to do so. he grabbed onto both of her wrists, pulling her into an alley nearby, into the darkness. “don’t call me that,” he said through a taut jaw, his concentration never wavering. then, in a single, satisfying moment, a cuff popped open, and he set to unlock the other one. “stop moving,” he warned.
“i hardly think me moving is our biggest problem, moose.” she said, the addition of the new name born from no other reason then to simply spite him. “it wasn’t my decision to take us into an alley with the span of a broom closet and about as much light as the inside of a fucking mausoleum.” the alleyway, as alleyways went, was small. small meant confinement. little options. no place to run. caged. the fact that she was not able to see properly did little to ease the assault of her heart on her ribcage as the sound of footfalls continued in their direction. her relief was expressed through a sigh upon her release with the sound of the final click of the cuff. without so much as a pause for breath, kenna turned her back on the other man, trying to make a run for the alleyway’s exit.
“she won’t make a sound, i promise.”
“you heard her asshole. the baby isn’t going to bother you, so scat.” there was some awkward scuffling from the third party, but eventually the antagonist chose the high road. much to kenna’s relief and, she assumed, that of the young mother.

He immediately shoved he knee down and thrusted his shoulder into her chest with a sharp push. “Aw darlin, ya gatta get consent. It’s a new age.” He still had firm hold on her handcuffs. “So are you gonna tell me why you’re running?”
“well, don’t say i didn’t try to be nice.” kenna reeled her knee up and her heel connected with the man’s foot. hard. taking advantage of the breath she managed to gain for herself, kenna twisted her entire body over and under so that she had his arms pinned behind him and applied pressure. but for all her efforts, his grip was more persistent than she initially gave him credit for. she wasn’t going to loosen it, not without breaking some fingers anyway. and she’d rather not resort to that. “don’t be a hero, darlin’. let. go.”
Flashback: 2006 - Kenna & Logan
Logan laid down behind Kenna and wrapped his arms around her. Logan smiled as he forgot how much Kenna was not a morning person. He leaned in and said “I don’t remember much from yesterday or last night but thank you for coming to save me. You’re the last woman that I can say that I love with all my heart. Just go back to sleep now. We’re both going to be ok now.”
Logan kept his arms around her as they both fell back to sleep. For the first time in days, he was happy again. He had walled off his heart but Kenna would always occupy a place there. “I love you. ”
kenna turned to face him, which was a task of no extreme difficult as his face was pressed right against her back. there was an odd look in his eyes. a strange glint that was never there before. come rain or snow, sleep or no sleep, there was not a detail of him that kenna did not have memorised. she leaned forward, forehead resting against his. one arm folded over his, and the other reaching back to cradle his head. “i’m always going to be there to save you, you dork.” kenna turned back to face the other way, her lashes falling over her eyes, but the placement of her arms remained much the same.
there was still an uneasiness that haunted her. a shadow in the back of her mind, an itch that she could not reach. but in the soft light of morning that filtered through the heavy velvet curtains and the warmth of his person and worn sheets. the picture of his stupid grin in her mind’s eyes. it was difficult to prolong such concern when she felt none. kenna sank back further into his chest, moulding herself to the curve of his body. “mm,” his words drew a smile upon her lips, “I know.”
‘Are you always a smartass?’ Nope. Sometimes I’m asleep.

Flashback: 2006 - Kenna & Logan
Logan passed out in her arms and finally slept for the first time in days. In the morning, he woke up still in her arms as she was asleep still wrapping him up. He got up and helped her lay out straight and he covered her up with the covers. Logan walked in his bathroom and stared in his mirror. What was happening to him? Why was he allowing this crap to effect him this way? It was in this moment that Logan made his pact with the devil. “No more will I allow a woman to get this close to me and hurt me like I did.”
Logan walled his heart off and swore off love that day. He also swore off drinking to the levels he was drinking in the recent days. Logan walked to the kitchen realizing he was wearing nothing but a pair of boxers. What the hell did I do last night? He made some coffee for Kenna and himself. After pouring a few cups, he went back to the bedroom. He sat next to Kenna and stared at his best friend. God she was beautiful. Thank God she came last night. How did she know to come over? Logan reached over and rubbed the side of her face with is rough hand. Her features were much softer than his.
Logan leaned forward and kissed her cheek and whispered in her ear. “Wake up Kenna, I made us coffee.” As she opened her eyes, he smiled for the first time in days.
her lashes fluttered with a start, with no warmth in her arm kenna panicked in her wake, but upon realising who it was that woke her from her sleep in the first place kenna’s relief was expressed through a sigh. and then a groan. and then she brought the sheets up to meet her chin; turning her back on logan’s stupid grin and logan’s stupid everything. “you look dumb,” she said, her voice husky with lingering sleep.
there was the smallest hint of a smile in the corner of her mouth. he was smiling and he was up and making coffee. that was a start if there ever was one. but kenna was also tired and for a moment reverted back to her previous days in high school when her father would have to practically drag her mattress out -- and her with it -- to get her to do anything. that recount was a slight exaggeration, but one thing was true and that was that kenna was not a morning person.
Flashback: 2006 - Kenna & Logan
Kenna helped Logan back to his bed. He was a wreck. He had been drinking for about four days straight. He was not a man. He was carcass of a man. She steadied him back to his bedroom. He stumbled as he walked from both grief and way too much bourbon. As they entered his bedroom, Logan began to sob again. She tried to lay him down and pulled his shirt off and laid down.
Kenna tried to move away but Logan grabbed her arm “please don’t leave me. I don’t want to be alone anymore. Please I need you.” He pulled her arm wanting her to lay down next to him. “I don’t want to be alone. Please don’t make me be alone.” He keep saying over and over again. For a man that had been known his entire life as tough and able to overcome all obstacles put in front of him, he had finally found something that could best him.
kenna's mouth moved to form the word ‘no’, accompanying it would be her telling him that she needed to go back to campus. she had exams to study for, friends to try and keep, a life out of wilmington to return to. while her mouth wanted to communicate one thing, her actions spoke of something else entirely. kenna took the hand that fastened its grip around her arm and with it helped herself into the space on the bed beside him. in the darkness there were few sounds but the rustling of sheets, logan’s pleas and the distance whirring of cars from outside the building, kenna’s hushes soon joined the chorus of sounds. she brushed her fingers through his hair and with her other arm held firmly onto his shoulders. “you’re not alone. i’m not going anywhere. you’re not alone…”
in the darkness she held him and loved him. she peppered kisses across his forehead and stroked his hair and did not so much as stifle a yawn until his sobs quietened into sleep had half consumed him. kenna’s head lifted from the top of his, her eyes traced the tired lines that were that marred his features. “oh logan,” she murmured into the darkness. her arms brought him closer to her, her chin propped on top of his crown. “you’re going to be the death of me.”
“I would but I’m not one to assist in criminal activity. So, we’ll just wait for your friends to show up.”
“oh for god’s sake--” kenna seized the collar of the man’s shirt and yanked him down to her height where her lips met his. needless to say it was not gentle. she arranged herself accordingly so that much of her sleeve, hair, and a good sum of his body, hid the glitter of the silver bracelets. her knees slithered up between his legs and paused just below him. a warning that she was not below using the threat of violence should he decide to blow her cover.
He was a bit taken aback with what he had just witnessed and took part in within such a short period of time. He was unsure who he was really helping or hindering at this point. He only knew that he just practically aided her in her escape from the cops. He shook his head, nose wrinkling when she called him a kid. He could leave. He knew that much, but his curiosity always pulled him into the worst of situations. He deserved at least a few answers. “Listen. I don’t know what just happened or why they’re after you,” He began, stepping towards her again. “But I can help..with those. As long as you haven’t like..killed anyone. And if you’re a thief good luck trying to rob me cause I’m broke.”
her bracelet fell into her lap to accompany the sigh that fell from her lips. even if her face was not turned in his direction, one can almost be rest assured that there would be a rolling of the eyes somewhere in the display of exasperation.”believe me kiddo, if i’ve killed anyone you’d be the first to know.” she left her words as food for thought and moved the subject along quickly, for kenna’s attention was already seized by an earlier statement that was made by the younger man. “do you know how to get these off?”
Flashback: 2006 - Kenna & Logan
Logan fell into Kenna’s arms. He heard her words but his soul was numb. “I just don’t understand Kenna. I don’t understand why someone would be this cruel to me? I need a drink.” He tried to get up but stumbled back into her arms. He was a wreck and a shell of the man he was previously. Logan would never be the same. This was one of those life altering events that change a person into something else. He was frightened at what he might become.
At this point, being in Kenna’s arms was the only thing that was keeping him together. She was beautiful woman now and not the five year old girl he had saved so many years ago. Now it was Logan’s turn to be “carried” to safety by his one long term love.
kenna's mouth had begun forming a protest, although it would appear that she needn’t take too long before the giant of a man fell back into her arms. her cheek was pressed to the top of his hand and her fingers ran through his hair in an effort to soothe the pain out of him. she felt tears pricked the back of her eyes but she did not allow them to fall between her lashes. she turned her face down just enough to feel his hair against her lips, when she turned back her cheeks were smeared with a tear that rebelled against her resolution. “i don’t know logan, i don’t know.” it made her feel useless and she hated herself for it.
they remained in much of the same position, for how long she knew not. she only felt that she could remain on the couch forever. but of course, life would surely not allow such comforts. her hands fell to the side of his face where she lifted his chin up so her eyes could find his. kenna’s fingers traced the lines of his face down from his brow to the bottom of his mouth, so light were her touch they were almost like feathery kisses. he looked so worn. so tired. so broken. “you need to get some sleep,” she said, the most gentle she spoke thus far. she held his eyes for a fraction of a breath before slipping her arm underneath him; a sturdy post for him to lean on as she guided logan to the direction of the bed.
