And yes, there are more where that came from.
Nor is it any part of my thesis to maintain that it [the detective story] is a vital and significant form of art. There are no vital and significant forms of art; there is only art, and precious little of that.

"Well, I might write a more satisfactory book if I did this, that, or the other as you suggest. I daresay you're perfectly right, but this is how I like it and this is how I'm going to do it, and if other people don't like it I can't help it, and what's more, I don't care."
-- W. Somerset Maugham, on Moby-Dick
But I who have written this history, or rather this fable, give no credence to the various incidents in it. Some things in it are the trickery of demons; some are poetic figments; some seem true, some not; and some are for the amusement of idiots.

They seem to be ignorant of the precision and order, and even of the principle by which large bodies are moved, but they possess some of the requisites for making good troops, such as extreme cunning, great industry in moving ground and felling of wood, activity and a spirit of enterprise upon any advantage.

Okay, by just looking at the artwork I deduce that all Holmes and Watson are doing 24/7 is basically sitting around in chairs while judging everything (unless they get up to judge more ppl).
I mean, seriously:
even each other
I could lie by your side for the rest of our lives I think I'll walk away right now I could let you pet me for a hundred years I think we need some time apart I could be kissed a thousand thousand times I think I'm needed somewhere else I could sit on your lap forever I said I could sit on your lap forever Don't you even think of trying to get up Well, you should have gone to the bathroom beforehand Because forever is a very, very long time

Indiana Jones Mystery Package
We donât really even know how to start this post. Yesterday we received a package addressed to âHenry Walton Jones, Jr.â. We sort-of shrugged it off and put it in our bin of mail for student workers to sort and deliver to the right faculty memberâ we get the wrong mail a lot.
Little did we know what we were looking at. When our student mail worker snapped out of his finals-tired haze and realized who Dr. Jones was, we were sort of in luck: this package wasnât meant for a random professor in the Stat department. It is addressed to âIndianaâ Jones.
What we know: The package contained an incredibly detailed replica of âUniversity of Chicago Professorâ Abner Ravenwoodâs journal from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. It looks only sort of like this one, but almost exactly like this one, so much so that we thought it might have been the one that was for sale on Ebay had we not seen some telling inconsistencies in cover color and âEx Librisâ page (and distinct lack of sword). The book itself is a bit dusty, and the cover is teal fabric with a red velvet spine, with weathered inserts and many postcards/pictures of Marion Ravenwood (and some cool old replica money) included. Itâs clear that it is mostly, but not completely handmade, as although the included paper is weathered all of the âhandwritingâ and calligraphy lacks the telltale pressure marks of actual handwriting.Â
What we donât know: Why this came to us. The package does not actually have real stamps on itâ the outside of the package was crinkly and dirty as if it came through the mail, but the stamps themselves are pasted on and look like they have been photocopied. There is no US postage on the package, but we did receive it in a bin of mail, and it is addressed to the physical address of our building, Rosenwald Hall, which has a distinctly different address from any other buildings where it might be appropriate to send it (Haskell Hall or the Oriental Institute Museum). However, although now home to the Econ department and College Admissions, Rosenwald Hall used to be the home to our departments of geology and geography.Â
If youâre an applicant and sent this to us: Why? How? Did you make it? Why so awesome? If youâre a member of the University community and this belongs to you or youâve gotten one like it before, PLEASE tell us how you acquired it, and whether or not yours came with a descriptionâ or if weâre making a big deal out of the fact that you accidentally slipped a gift for a friend in to the inter-university mail system. If you are an Indiana Jones enthusiast and have any idea who may have sent this to us or who made it, let us know that, too.Â
We know this sounds like a joke/hoax⊠itâs not (at least, from our end).  Any hints, ideas, thoughts, or explanations are appreciated. Weâve been completely baffled as to why this was sent to us, in mostly a good way, but itâs clear this is a neat thing that either belongs somewhere elseâ or belongs in the halls of UChicago admissions history.
Internet: help us out. If youâre on Reddit (weâre not) or any other nerdly social media sites where we might get information about this, feel free to post far and wide and e-mail any answers, clues, ideas, thoughts, or musings to [email protected]Â (yes, we did set up an email account just to deal with this thing).Â
Public Service Announcement: If I'd done this, it probably would have gone to the Oriental Institute.
This just made me happy. Nice graphic design, too.
My only regret at living in this idyllic ivory tower surrounded by snow-covered mountains, deer, Chinese pheasants, tall pine trees, and silence is that while a writer needs a lot of silence, he also needs stimulating talk.
-- Robert Heinlein, letter to Theodore Sturgeon (Feb. 11, 1955)
Upon Timothy's undertaking that on the eve of his departure, that is to say on Friday, he would buy dinner for all those adversely affected, it was agreed that no more should be said of the matter. I pointed out that I myself had some claim to be among his guests; to which he answered, very nicely, that he had not imagined I could think myself excluded.
