Recovering after 9/11
I wrote this article one year after 9/11. I took the time to dig it out today and post it on my professional website because after all these years the original weblink is now dead. Time has moved on, but the men and women who personally saw the horror of burning skyscrapers and the strewn carnage of planes turned into weapons of war haven’t forgotten it. So neither will I. Out of the many hundreds of articles I wrote in my time in the U.S. Air Force, this remains my favorite piece and my favorite interview. As a journalist, I get to help people heal by telling their story. Everyone has their own memory of what they were doing that day, but I will always remember Keith Winchell telling me about how he physically stepped through a window into a world he never expected to see outside a horror movie. Firefighters and cops run towards trouble, not away from it, and I admire them for their sacrifice and courage. There is so much pain and destruction in this world, but there are also people like Winchell, Driscoll and Retzlaff, who each put their lives on the line to help rescue others. Three went in that day but only two made it out. This article will probably remain my favorite story of all time but I serve a mighty God. I leave it up to him to topple this experience for me. Let’s roll! I invite you to read a little bit about their story at https://melissalegates.wordpress.com/2016/09/11/seeking-closure-one-year-after-911/ #9/11neverforget #Let'sroll

Copy other artists to increase your drawing skills, surround yourself with great art They say copying someone is the sincerest form of flattery. I agree. There is nothing wrong, morally or legally, with replicating other artist's masterpieces--as long as you don't sell it and you give credit to the original artist. Georgia O'Keeffe is my inspiration for this encaustic piece. I created it with Neocolor II aquarelle wax pastels on Colourfix sanded pastel paper. I drew/painted it on top a thrift store warming plate with a sculpting tool for my paint brush. Even though it looks like an oil painting, I promise you it isnt. No harsh chemicals and no long drying time. Its an unusual technique that can mix up your routine and prevent creative burn out. Its way easier than it looks, and you can do it too.
