The article Projection: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt brings up an idea that humans first encounter with art is with a cast of a shadow from a lamp light. I find it interesting that the maiden of Cornith decides to trace the outline of her lover’s shadow instead of drawing a portrait of him.if a drawing is really a reflection of light bouncing of a person and hitting our eye, would a portrait be the same as the outline of the shadow? This idea would follow with the story of the portrait of the Buddha, where the artist has to draw the portrait from the reflection of the Buddha in water. The entire article made me think about how the human eye works.Light bounces off of an object and that light hits the optic nerve and various cones inside the eye to tell the brain what we are looking at. Within the context of the article and it talking about projectors and televisions, you could come to the idea that the world around us is the projector and our eye is the wall it projects on.
Chapter 6 of our book Making Art, is all about the time and motion of art. It discusses time, be it actual, implied or recorded and is certain art forms, a running time. Every art form commands time. For paintings and 3d art, the artwork can control the length of time a viewer looks at it. For artwork that is a television show, movie or performance, it commands a set amount of time for it to be carried out. Along with time there needs to be a tempo and sequence to art. All artist have to think about what the viewer will see first and what direction they want the eye to move. The also have to think about how fast the viewer does this. If there is tempo and sequence, there is some kind of motion to artwork. The chapter discusses kinetic art, implied motion and recorded motion. Kinetic art could be work like pinwheels or interactive robotic sculptures. These pieces are designed to actually move. In comparison you have art that has implied motion like most paintings or drawings have. Recorded motion is reserved for film or a period of time captured with a lens based media. What I took away from this chapter is that it doesn’t matter what media you use for your art, there is always some kind of time and motion to it.
