Gachuurt, Mongolia in the spring. Lovely bit of countryside not far from the capital city, Ulaanbaatar.
Ger on Mongolia's Coal Road in the Gobi Desert. The trucks are part of thousand-strong caravan taking coal from the Mongol mines across the Sino border to the Chinese power plants.

Summer 2012 on Kodak Portra 400.
A slight lull during a sandstorm in the Mongolian Gobi Desert. In the center of the photo is a public outhouse. Our hotel didn't have water so we suffered a gritty week without bathing and if we needed a toilet we had to thresh the dust to that one.
The dust and the sand is inescapable and it gets inside everything. The fellow who repairs my cameras said that the guts of my Leicas are the dirtiest he'd ever seen.
My Suisse friend, Roman, roaming western Mongolia in his archaic and everlasting Toyota Land Cruiser 60. He drove to Mongolia from Switzerland via the Middle East, South-East Asia, then up through China.
I used some stupid Fuji Velvia slide film that was so blue I had I add several yellow filters in photoshop. E6 slide films are an exercise of frustration because of their exaggerated coolness, difficulty to process, aversions to digitization, and uselessly low ISOs. This was the only roll of E6 I shot in three years and I don't think I'd be shooting any in the future despite the insanely fine grain.
In the Mongol Altai mountains of the Altai province in the Altai city there's barely a snowflake on the sand despite it being winter and -20C.

This was my first time shooting Portra. What an insanely gorgeous colour film. It's no Kodachrome but these days every stock is an endangered species so a photographer must be like water.
Spring 2012
Derelict building in the 13 District of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The last picture I put up, being shot on a low-ISO film in medium format camera, was very smooth and clear. Too smooth and clear. This expired colour film provides more rigid, graininess which is more tuned to my style.
The "55record's" writing looks rad there. This used to be a record store but actually that's probably not true.

If you're lost you wouldn't be unwise to use the power lines for navigation. They make a good guide to get you into a town.
