Some additional images I got around to color grading on my galaxy s5. I find that the ability to do basic edit/grade literally anywhere with VSCO CAM on a mobile device is a) extremely convenient and b) SUPER ADDICTING.
Parental Guidance
These are my parents. They don’t stream movies, they don’t understand wifi encrypted passwords, hashtags, or twitter feeds. My mom still has her Juno mail account. They don’t use or understand what a Facebook is. I don’t think that they have ever had an actual portrait taken off them. So when I was finally able to talk them in to my studio, I wanted to capture some defining portraits. They looked at my studio strobes as foreign space objects as I explained to them how they are triggered wirelessly… with all of their qwerks they are still my amazing parents. They have been through an awful lot and all a long they’ve been there for one another.
Shooting Untethered
Today I got to shoot artist and brother Jon Morris ( @jdmfinearts). It was a fun shoot, and we tried some different lighting setups. The images were shot in jpeg format and transferred to my cell phone via eyefi mobi card. From there I was able to do some minor color adjustments via VSCO app on my phone. There was absolutely no photoshop involved. Bam, I had images ready to submit to client, promote on social media, or prepare for a blog post in a matter of minutes. I don’t imagine every shoot being edited on my phone, but I wanted to see what I could come up with.
Playing with the light allowed me to get dramatically different images with the same lighting setup. The setup consisted of three PCB Einstein strobes, two strip boxes and an octabox. Strobes were triggered by Pocket Wizard CTL system. The backdrop was constructed by me and consisted of a weathered wood planks affixed to a frame. Images were shot on a Nikon D800 and edited on a Galaxy S5 phone - the same phone I wrote this post on.
The goal of today’s shoot was to capture images that would be used by the client for future publication all while experimenting with wireless untethered technology. So a very rewarding day with this setup - I can see a big benefit of implementing this system in the field / on location.

It turns out that finding time to set up the studio and test the lighting isn't as easy as you think when you have a two year old, a one month old, and a full time job... but a very understanding wife is a life saver. Don't let sleep deprivation hold you back - let the lucid dream state inspire!

So, twenty-thirteen was a very difficult year. Life events resulted in me having to step away from blogging, social media, and website management. Well twenty-fourteen is well underway, and I discovered behance.net, which is a tool for creatives to share their work with other creatives. This resulted in me updating my site with a project orientated format. I have some personal projects in the works, so check back for update!

A Hero at Rest
Today is the most difficult day in my life. Today I watched my brother find his final resting spot. He was a man of great honor and integrity. He served in the United States Army for nearly 13 years and was a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He joined the US Army Criminal Investigative Division and investigated crimes throughout the United States and Europe. He has participated in joint task force operations with various federal agencies to ensure our freedom and protect our country in countless ways. He enjoyed traveling, experiencing life and photography. His ventures throughout Western Europe allowed him to find his passion for life in Germany. He left the military to embark on an educational path at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany. He was happy and at ease in his new home. He was so excited to experience the intricate obstacles and opportunities that life had to offer - then he was suddenly recruited from this world for a more important mission. I reflect on his accomplishments and see that he has lived experiences that I can only dream of. It will take me untold lifetimes to become a man of his fortitude. I can only pray that his influence on me will aide me in becoming a better son, brother, father and man.

Another beautiful wedding! This one had a bit of travel mixed in between the ceremony and reception. The ceremony took place at captivating church in Riverside, CA - then we headed to California Citrus State Historic Park for some outdoor portraiture - then, crawled with bumper to bumper traffic, dashed to a spanish art gallery/restaurant for the reception in Los Angeles, CA. All in all, after much running around, it was a stunning day and beautiful event for the Rodriguez family!

Philosophy to photography?
Came across a photographer's site where the photographer dedicated a page to their philosophical approach to photography- a mission statement of sorts. The page boiled down to 'we are photojournalists who capture moments as they occur.' I began to ponder why a photographer would deem it necessary to explain one's personal style of photography to the world. Shouldn't our photographs speak words of their own? Do I illustrate how black and white photographs are resiliently absent of color? Do we tell our cameras what type of images to capture, or does the image tell the camera what type of photographer we are? Our style is forever changing. As I run through different compositions and lighting schematics in my head I am aware that no shot will be like any other. I am capturing a scene, mood, emotion- a moment in time that will occur regardless of presence of the camera operated by my tender, hang-nail afflicted, index finger. I believe my goal is to unearth the image that is already present, and store it in my Ecto Containment Unit called a camera.

Portrait of a Photographer - What does it mean for a photographer to take a self portrait? Are we trying to capture an image that resembles our character, or are we searching for definition within ourselves and creating characteristics which we do not possess? How is this defined through our portrait? Is it the choice of lighting, location, wardrobe, expressions and colors? Hmm... What does your self portrait say about you? What does mine say about me? Can the answer truly be defined?
Shot info: This image was lit with an Einstein w/ beauty dish camera right. ABR800 on camera. SB-600 triggered by flex-tt5 as a hair separation light camera left behind me. SB-800 on slave mode fired against the wall behind me. Camera set to timer, since I lost misplaced my trigger.
Why be tied down to a studio. For me, nature possess the most interesting backdrops for portraiture. I took my Einstein and Vagabond mini on location to Riverwalk for G'Ma and G'Kids portrait session - adjusting the flash wirelessly allows for quick adjustments to match ambient light. A thanks to my wife for playing assistant for the day!
