“Not really.” Eliza’s hands were still bound but she had an idea. “I know my ideas aren’t exactly foolproof but it’s worth a shot.”

Ryder took a long moment to think, but ended up shrugging anyway. “Whatever. Beats sitting around here while they destroy everything any day.” He turned away to look at their captors. “Can you reach the knots? We’re gonna have to do this the muggle way.”

Ryder hugged her, holding on to her like he’d never see her again. Because it was very possible that he wouldn’t. “I love you. Are you okay?” “We have to get the youngest kids out of here.” Ryder sighed. They couldn’t let the weakest hurt and be treated as collateral damage. “Can you take them to the music classroom? Most people don’t even know it exists, I think it’s the safest place to go.”

“No—-” Annette’s voice was strained, anxious; the Death Eater who had tortured her had let her go, returned her to the group, but the memory of his spell still  l i n g e r e d  on her skin and she curled into herself, “I should’ve been—-I shouldn’t have given them the satisfaction of—-” of hearing her scream; she should’ve been braver, “It just hurt so BAD.”

No. Ryder sighed and pulled his best friend into a tight hug. It was bad enough that they had broken into the school, but now it was p e r s o n a l. You don’t just mess with family and walk away unharmed. “Listen to me. Listen, alright? You are not a coward.” Hands on both sides of her face, he kissed her forehead. “You are so brave, Annie. So brave sometimes it’s scary. That’s wasn’t screaming, do you hear me? That was war cry. That was you proving you can r o a r. That was you blowing their ears off instead of giving away information. That’s what makes you a winner. We’ll be fine.” Ryder promised her, but it wasn’t like he could guarantee. There was something very wrong with the way he said “I’m gonna kill all of them.”

“I don’t trust you.” He hissed, but the size of the gash on his abdomen was worrying and, to be honest, he didn’t really think he had time to pick a healer.

She twisted her eyes shut, a pained look on her face as she panicked internally. Why was he doing this? He knew she wouldn’t be able to do this. She couldn’t ‘look him in the eye’ while putting him through something like that. Finally, she opened her eyes and shook her head. “I can’t do that. I can’t,” she sighed. She was weak and cared for him, loved him too much. This mission was as much about information as it was about testing them and their loyalty and it was clear she valued Ryder more than she valued the Death Eaters. She had to join for her family and she was loyal to the dark side for their sake, but she would always be more loyal to him, even if he hated her. She knew refusing to torture him would result in a punishment but she’d take that any day. “I love you, Ry,” she said softly.

Ryder sighed in relief. He knew it. He knew it. He almost gave up, but that almost saved him from an amount of heartache he could not imagine. He was glad the world was made of almosts and maybes and ifs. There was no possibility in certainty. You can’t win a war with certainty. And now he had to help her. In the five seconds no one but Elizabeth was paying attention to him, he fell to the floor and started to hiss in a pain he didn’t feel, praying she would get the idea. Play along. “Please, Elizabeth! Don’t do this! Stop!” He looked at her pleadingly, eyes searching hers for any sign that she understood him. I love you too, they said. Let me help you. “I don’t know anything!” He needed fake information. And he needed it to look real. To save her. “Slap me.” He mouthed at her. Elizabeth had to play her part too.

    he was right. the light that he gave off often blinded her & the brunette finally ended up nodding, her gaze wary even as she agreed with him. ‘ after this year, i don’t think we really still know each other, ‘ always the girl who argued. even when she knew he was right. ‘ – i’m NOT evil, ryder. but it’s not like anyone has dragged me out of here by my hair either. ‘ so maybe, she was just a little scared.

“I think we do.” He took a step closer, voice toning down. He couldn’t risk getting caught by the steelfaces. “Not in the way we used to.” Ryder smiled. In the freak show that was his life at the moment, it was very telling that arguing with Esperanza was the only thing that could bring him a sense of normalcy. “I know you’re not evil. Just painfully annoying.” He took her hand, pulling her down the corridor. “Come on, we can’t stay out here.”

“I’m still me. That hasn’t changed.“ His use of her last name made her flinch, her eyes welling up as she watched him spit out blood. Because of her. She knew she’d be punished for her weakness, but it didn’t even matter to her in that moment. Nothing mattered except for the boy in front of her, just as it always had been. But it wasn’t, not anymore. Her decisions, her attempts to make her father proud - it was the reason her best friend was spitting up blood and it was killing her. “I’m sorry, Ry… I had no choice. I know how you view it, I do. I know you hate me. I promise you, Evie is going to be alright but you have to cooperate. PLEASE, or I won’t have a choice but to hurt you and you know I can’t do that to either of you.”

“Everything has changed.” He said, and couldn’t stop himself from rembering. I don’t think marrying me is the worst think you could do. Hey, she’s practically my mum too.  It felt like an eternity away and, at the same time, a single moment. This girl...she was almost family. He would’ve made her part of his life and she wasn’t even who she said she was. “I won’t make this any easier for you, Ellie. You’ll have to torture me. You’ll have to look me in the eye and say the word.” For a moment he paused, wondering if he could do what he was forcing her to, were their places reversed. If it was the order locking up the death eater, could he hurt this girl he loved? If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you. And the abyss inside him answered him clearly. He could.

He snorted. In a sea of proverbial and non proverbial snakes, he never hid his true self. It was both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. The snake inside him would look at you and shine in warning colors. He was explicit danger, a loaded gun. You could not stumble into him and say you didn’t see it coming. He was a Gryffindor kind of trouble, of course. He was never too good at illusion. “Don’t look at me like that and pretend you don’t know who I am.” She knew him, in the most biblical sense. Even when she hated him, she knew him. Even if he hated it, she knew him.

Her frown deepened as her fingers curled into a fist. There had been a warning of the invasion, yes, but no one ever mentioned to her that she’d be losing absolutely everything in the process. The shaking in her hands spread to every other muscle in her body and she looked at him. “Ryder… You need to stop. You’re going to make things worse for yourself and that’s what I’ve been trying to avoid,” she snapped. “Stop being difficult and just tell me what you know. Please.“

“I was gonna take you home during the holidays. Who the fuck are you?” The first sign that he was losing it was probably the way he started laughing. “You’ve been trying to avoid? That’s rich, Rosier. You’ve been doing the exact opposite of that.” Ryder spat out a sickly composition of blood and saliva. “I thought you sisters were the bad seeds, but at least Carina never pretended she was a saint. You better pray Evie is not injured. I have nothing else to tell you. We are done.” He was overcome with a lovecraftian feeling: an anticipation of the sadness he could predict. He knew it existed, but it had yet to show its ugly face. In a way, it was absolutely terrifying to know it was there when he couldn’t yet see it. It was the aftermath of anger and, ironically, it was anger he held on to.

Elizabeth felt nauseated as she stared down her best friend. Of course they would make sure she was with Ryder. Everyone knew what he meant to her and it was clearly meant to test her loyalty. She let out a breath, trying to keep herself in check but not being able to ignore the way her hands were trembling. “You’re not exactly in the position to be making threats, are you?”

It was disgust. That’s what he felt. As he looked at her, that nauseating feeling curled into itself inside of him, making his hair stand on end as he fought the urge to vomit. Hell, all of him was on the edge of something, something absolutely feral. Angry as he was, he felt it through the ira. The cruel stab of a subtle knife, it tasted bitter with the bile. B E T R A Y A L. “I’m not making any threats. I am going to kill you. I’m promising you.” He snorted. “What are you doing to yourself?”
