KexJazz is our series of weekly jazz concerts and it happens to be the most consistent event since Kex Hostel opened in 2011. The driving force behind these concerts is Mr. Sigurður Flosason, saxophonist par excellence and one of Iceland’s true jazz giants.
This week we have the Quintet Birgisson playing diverse batch of songs from the vaults of Kenny Garett, Joshua Redman, Bob Raynolds, Kurt Cobain and Horace Silver.
These are the evenings when many of Iceland’s (occasionally international) finest jazz cats will show up at our house every Tuesday at 8:30 PM. A perfect evening for some dinner & jazz.
KexJazz of the week comes from the up and coming Unnur Sara Eldjárn.

Daniel Beaussier Quartet, Jóel Pálsson Quartet, Kristjana Stefánsdóttir, Secret Swing Society, Tómas R. Einarsson, Andrea Gylfadóttir, ASA Trio, Sunna Gunnlaugs, Kira Martini Quartet, Sigurður Flosason, Quartet Birgisson, Hjörtur Ingvi Jóhannsson (Hjaltalín), Ari Bragi & Frakkarnir, Þór Breiðfjörð and Björn Thoroddssen are just amongst the few that have played since the series started.
Moses Hightower are playing a free show at Kex Hostel on February. 4th.
Since 2007, Reykjavík-based quartet Moses Hightower has been in the vanguard of Icelandic soul, its output “unlike anything else in Icelandic music” (Fréttablaðið). The band has performed sold-out concerts at venues big and small, released two critically acclaimed full-length albums, and received Icelandic Music Awards along the way.
Consisting of guitarist Daníel Friðrik Böðvarsson, drummer Magnús Trygvason Eliassen, bassist & lead singer Andri Ólafsson, and keyboard player & lead singer Steingrímur Karl Teague, Moses Hightower has since its conception been plagued by being scattered across Europe, its members taking turns studying abroad.
Leikhópurinn Lotta býður Dórotheu úr Galdrakarlinum í Oz í heimsókn á Kex Hostel þar sem hún mun segja frá ævintýrum sínum og syngja lög úr leikritinu.
Leikhópurinn Lotta er margrómaður leikhópur og er landsþekktur fyrir sérstakar og frumlegar útfærslur á klassískum verkum á borð við Litlu gulu hænunni, Búkollu, Gilitrutt, Stígvelaði kötturinn og fleiri.
Skemmtunin verður í Gym & Tonic 17. janúar og hefst klukkan 13:00.

Á næsta jazzkvöldi KEX Hostel, þriðjudaginn 22. desember, kemur fram kvartett píanóleikarans Önnu Grétu Sigurðardóttur. Auk hennar skipa hljómsveitina þeir Ari Bragi Kárason á trompet, Valdimar K. Sigurjónsson á kontrabassa og Einar Scheving á trommur. Þau munu flytja fjölbreytt úrval þekktra jazzlaga. Anna Gréta hefur stundað nám við Konunglega tónlistarháskólann í Stokkhólmi síðan haustið 2014. Hún hlaut íslensku tónlistarverðlaunin á síðasta ári sem bjartasta vonin í flokki jazz- og blústónlistar. Tónlistin hefst kl 20:30 og stendur í u.þ.b 2 klst með hléi. Aðgangur er ókeypis. KEX Hostel er á Skúlagötu 28.

Pola Rise from Poland along with Icelandic band VAR is playing live at Kex Hostel on November 25th. Pola Rise is an artist finding herself in electronic music. She could be easily compare to Bjork’s loveliness but she’s much more mysterious. Her sensitive voice can move you and give creeps. On stage Pola Rise accompany MANOID – producer who transfers the sound of nature into synthetic sounds. He changes emotions into sine waves. Pola introduced her sensitivity and unique sensibility to the song. Her soft voice perfectly matches the sound of MANOID and takes the listeners into a fascinating journey with every note. Together, they created a sophisticated combination of two opposite elements and despite the difference of characters. What binds MANOID and Pola Rise together are their mutual inspirations and fascinations. Premiere of her first EP „The Power of Coincidence” was released on April 2015. Live concerts are the only way to listen music from her LP.
KexJazz happens every Tuesday at 8:30 PM.
