Plank-Ups
Begin in a high-plank position. With minimal body movement, lower your right forearm to the ground. Repeat with the left. Keeping your back straight and tight, return to your right hand, and then the left.
Options: This can also be done from your knees. To up the challenge, balance something light (like a yoga block) on your back to ensure you are not wiggling.

Side Plank
Line your elbow up with your shoulder and your shoulder with your hip and heel. With a very tight and braced core, push the ground away from you, staying active in the shoulder joint. Feet can be stacked or the top foot in front of the bottom, pressing the blades of the feet into the floor.
I never mentioned my own body or feelings, but itâs cool.
Itâs also worth noting that no one has said that you canât be proud of losing weight. Thatâs a personal feeling, I have no way of stopping you from feeling proud @thewritingjellyfishâ.
What weâre instead saying is that feeling proud due to weight loss isnât supported within the Body Positive Movement, and itâs worthwhile for people to examine where such feelings stem from. Pride in weight loss is typically based within a culture that feeds us fatphobia, body shaming and intense feelings of physical inadequacy since birth, and we want to recognize that.Â
If you want to be proud, do it, I guess. I donât control your emotions. Just be aware of the negative impact you may be having on those around you and the manipulative culture of $weight$loss$ that youâre contributing to. And, of course, recognize that trying to publicly promote such material within Body Positive circles will make you the target of blowback. Thatâs the cost.
I know that my personal situation on the matter isnât standard by any means but I feel like itâs an unseen or lesser talked about segment of the discussion on body positivity and weight loss. And I feel like there is a point of intersection here that needs to be talked about more. not to pressure people for any reason but because sometimes I feel like there is a lot of pressure from the BP community to be a certain way. And it sometimes feels like that certain way ignores disability. Obviously not all the time, but often enough that itâs felt over here with me.
Itâs taken me a long time to get here but I am fine with my weight from a mental image standpoint. I could be great with being the weight I am for the rest of my life, if it wasnât for my semi-recent diagnosis with hEDS and severe downturn in my joint health.
I feel like I need to take pressure off of my joints because they are degenerating faster than a person who doesnât have a connective tissue disorder, and even an unintended fluctuation of 10 lbs lower has a pretty drastic effect on reducing my pain.
So I feel like due to these factors I could say I could be âproudâ to lose weight without it being rooted in something sinister, but Iâm not sure how I could talk about being such without being gross about it because SO MUCH of the conversation around weight loss is both wrapped up in societal pressures and money. To put it mildly.
and I definitely donât want to hurt anyone about it.Â
But that leaves me with not knowing how to talk about my own experiences without hurting someone.
any thoughts? Iâve been following you for a long time, and youâve made quite an impression in breaking my self esteem away from a weighted ideal. But because of following for a while Iâm also a little anxious about this too.Â
I keep rewriting this because Iâm not completely happy with my answer. A lot of this could be phrased better, so I encourage others to jump in.
Iâd venture that this is a more common conflict than you expect, although youâre absolutely right that it isnât openly talked about enough - any sort of change in your body can have a ripple effect in how you feel, so itâs okay to notice that weight changes coincide with less pain!
The thing is: itâs unlikely that weight loss is 100% causing this change in pain. Weight loss is really a symptom, not a source. Itâs that whole correlation vs causation deal. Instead of centering the conversation around weight, we can instead focus on 1. the actions youâve taken in changing your lifestyle or healthcare, 2. what youâre currently experiencing right now, and 3. the effects youâre benefitting from right now.Â
So rather than saying âLosing weight made me feel less pain!â you can examine the situation as a whole and start to analyze other elements that may have contributed to this outcome. Maybe itâs âAs I remove excess oils and fats from my diet, Iâm feeling better and my joints donât hurt as much!â Or âLight exercise every day keeps me moving and that activity helps me feel better over time!â Or âMy new doctor is really taking my pain seriously and by following their instructions, weâre getting it down to a manageable amount!âÂ
All this stuff can certainly coincide with weight loss! But itâll also likely coincide with your fingernails growing, you sometimes getting the hiccups, you needing to wear an extra sweater as the weather gets colder, etc. Itâs just another biological process that could potentially be related to these effects, but not necessarily the cause of them. And we donât want to inherently link them together with weight loss when itâs really your own actions and decisions that deserve the credit.Â
So I suppose thatâs the heart of it: Letâs shift the conversation to actions. Because weight loss isnât an action. If it was, thereâs a huge section of the population that would sit down every day and âlose weightâ for an hour before work. So rather than focus on losing weight, we can acknowledge the actual things youâve done or experienced that might be impacting you positively.Â

Hip Opening Stretch
Start on all fours; bring your big toes together and slowly begin to walk your knees apart as you lower your chest toward the floor. Breathe into those areas of tension and tightness, and take your time. Each time you exhale, youâll sink a little bit deeper, and the more you stretch, the easier it gets. Repeat two to three times.

Double Leg Raise
Lay on your back. Place your thumbs under your tailbone for support. Lift your legs, flexing your feet as though you were going to kick your heels into the ceiling. Engage your core as you slowly lower your legs toward the floor. Only lower to the point that you feel your abs engageâbut donât allow your lower back to lift off the floor.
