This painting was created last year and was inspired by the idea that we as a people are "Fly" because of how we physically dress and our innate swag but its also that fact that we are/can/will rise above the issues that try to keep us down. From big paintings to small paintings I'm continuesly creating. I told my wife @khaliqart , that "I have these ideas, images, concepts, Letters in my head that have to come out" . Sometimes I'll watch a lot of documentaries on famous and non famous artists and get inspired by thier work ethic, sometimes by their clothing but most importantly is what motivates them and their discipline as an artists. .... Watching the Documentary about George Condo and he said “I love drawing as much as painting, so why not make your paintings from your drawings, but literally have there be no defined sort of hierarchy between the two mediums?.” So I started to paint the drawings that I had on various pieces of paper, I had hidden in my house. I stay getting inspired from older and younger artists of today and yesterday. .... To see black Muslim children ( especially from Harlem) holding a print of my painting entitled "The Bilalian" makes me feel appreciated for all the long hours, days and weeks I spend going into my mind and heart to create art. Finished my new piece entitled "An Nas" Size: 30inx40in Mixed medium:Acrylics, paper, oil stick,fabric. Style: Neo Pop Expressionism ... Price: DM me or email me @[email protected] . .... A short Story behind this painting is the idea of "social distancing" and how it relates to black people. Historically black people have been distanced socially from slavery to Jim Crow laws. . .... I began this painting with one black male image and I kept adding more male black figures as if I was fighting the idea of distancing us socially. Creating a social, collective of people who need more connecting than distancing. . .... After painting each black male image, I had this empty space on the left side of the canvas, so I added the Quranic arabic word "An Nas", written above the English term "social creatures" which is one of the meanings of the words An Nas. . ... Photo of Kha-tees logo tags. As an artist I want to be as diverse as Keith Haring was with how he created. His work went from subway walls to a full retail "Pop Store". His ability to move between High and Low art ( I hate those terms) made him able to connect to various demographics. Keith Harings work during his lifetime was seen on handball courts in Harlem, Museums in France and Tshirts in SoHo. Happy Birthday to The Honorable Malcolm X, El Hajj Malik Shabazz. The greatest student of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad. My mother and father joined the Nation of Islam in the 1950s and my wife's Mother joined in late 60s. So I'm a descendant of this community that became orthodox muslims in 1975 under the transition and leadership of The Honorable Imam Wallace Deen Mohammed. . Malcom X will never be separated from The NOI from my perspective because that's what made him who he was a great and honorable man. That's like separating Muhammad Ali from the NOI or separating Huey P Newton from the Black Panthers. . I LOVE Malcolm X because he comes from and helped build my specific community and his example helped me stand tall as a young Muslim in Harlem growing up. This mixed media painting I did 6 years ago. And and its entitled "Muhammad defeats White Supremacy" and this painting hangs in my sons room. I put it in his room so he could grow up with a different "visual" language than what most African American boys grow up with here in America specifically. My son being a third generation Muslim who comes from a family who were born and evolved out of the history of the "Language Body" of the Nation of Islam (under Elijah Muhammad and then under his son Imam Wallace D Mohammed). He already has a father and Mother who were used to not agreeing with the idea that everything white was God-like or pure. So part of me painting this piece was to instill what was instilled in my wife and I when we were younger and that was the idea of Love of self and defending or protecting your independent mind from a white Supremist master narrative. The idea of the painting has multiple layers to it and the more he looks into it the more he realizes new possibilities in his self. The obvious image of Muhammad Ali ( a real black Muslim person) knocking out a ( pretend white myth) is speaking to his ability to fight back and even defeat the ideas of white supremacy either physically or more importantly figuratively. The image of a white referee in white with the words" the new America" written across his chest holding Muhammad Ali's "right hand" that has the word "Truth" written across it, symbolizes the idea that the future of white America would encourage our total independence from them and would be happy that we would finally become self sufficient people in all aspects of our life from economics all the way to spirituality and that we defeated the idea of black inferiority complex and white superiority complex in our lives.
