Let's imagine for a sec guys..
You thought you did a good job.
You thought you were saving everyone. Thought this was the right thing to do.
Give up your name.
Give up your voice. Identity lost.
No one told you you'd be trapped in stasis. Lost to time. Not a thought to your name.
No. No one had really thought through any of your rule had they? You were young. Naive. Scared. Tired. And yet you served. Like a sheep sat on the dinner plate.
And this feeling seems to build up as you slowly lose pieces of yourself to the endless time in the gaping void of the millennium puzzle.
That you did something wrong. This was your fault. That you don't deserve the love and comforts of a happy, completely carefree childhood.
When you finally get freed from this birdcage you locked yourself in, are you happy? Scared? Angry? Lost? Or just numb?
No one remembers the name of À̸̛̛̛̛̛̛̛̖̖̟̖̙̉̅̍̋̔̇̿̄̃̐̉̅̏̏̾̈̏̎̐͐̏͆́̿̂̅̂̓̿̆͛͐̿͊̈́͆̃̽̂̒̌̎̍̈̍̈͒̅̃͂̄̏̐́͋̌͐̃̅̐́͐̒̆͌͌͂̍͂͊̈̅͋̃͌̓̓͊̆́̇̀̽̈́͌̒͑̾̈́̀̉̀̏̂̆̓̋́͊̀́̐̀́̈́̈̉̔́̏͂́̎̌͌̍̔̈́͋̈͐̌͑̐̔̑̑̊̓̃͛͛͛̿̊̀͐̕̚͘̚̚̕̕̕͝͝͝͠͝͝ͅṰ̷̨̨̢̢̡̧̧̨̡̩͈͚̭̼̱̹̤͔̭̭͙̮̼̠̫̭̦̙̗̣͙̱̙̖̖̹̺͇̻̗̞̪̯̟̝̜̜̬͙̱̻̻̤͚͚̝̻̫̘͚̖̙̭̜̮̺̻̥̳͖͖̪̯̙̟̺̪̳̺͔̮̗̦̱̮͇̰̗̣̫̮͚̔͐̄̿̎̀̽̈́͂̈̃́̅̐̏̕͘͜͜ͅE̸̡̢̢̡̡̢̡̧̨̢̡̨̨̘̤͍̦̣̝͙̲͔̪̱͉̱̠̣̱̗̮͙͍̥͇̥͍̩̟̰͕͎̲̤̜̙͓̥͇̗͖͍̹͍͓͚̲̤̫̞̺̩̬̹̜̪̹̳͈̥̘̱̩̭͎͈͇̫͙͍͇͇͖̯͎̤͙̖̟̩̪̖͉̰͙̻̳͇̫̹̘͖̟̺̳͇̦̪̙̖̙̝͔͇̯͙̜͙̭̤͇̝͎̘̺̼̻͐̂̊̓͐͊̆̅̏͆̀̐̈̽͗͑͌̾̇̏͑̽̇̀̚͘͘̕͜͜͜͜͜͝͝ͅͅM̵̡̢̢̢̨̨̡̢̡̨̩̫̝̘̥͕̟̺̘̞̫̲̤̙̫̟͈̦̦̞̘̪̱̩̖̠͕̬̗̯̘̮͇͉̜̦̤͚̰̝͚͈̜̹͍͉̙̫̥̻̮̪̗͚̘̜̻̼̙͕̹͚͓͔̪̼͔͇̟̯͇̳̱͚͙̣̰̮̰͍͓̣̘̮̮̭͈̺̙͈̹̣͈̀̂̉̊͐̓̈̈́̾̈͌͌͛̄̈́̽͐̍͐͊̿̀̏̔̆͋̕͜͜͠͝ͅͅ.

No wonder why Yami was a little gremlin shit eater (/affectionate) in s0 era ehe ;)
THIS. The way that Atem’s sacrifice and torture is ignored/glossed over in fandom/fic is WILD to me. People take his early behaviors as proof he was always evil when events clearly show otherwise.
Return
Favourite moments in ygo: Atem bows to Yuugi and his friends (ep.219)
I’ve always loved this moment in ep.219 when Atem finally finds out what his true name is, thanks Anzu for the cartouche, thanks Yuugi and his friends for their help and then bows to everyone.
Bowing is normal in Japanese culture so the writers may not have thought about this but Atem is Egyptian and what’s more he’s pharaoh, so bowing is a big no-no for him, especially to foreigners.
As in many cultures, bowing in Egypt is a way to show respect to your superiors. As the pharaoh was mostly shown on equal terms with the gods, it is especially rare to see a pharaoh bow in Ancient Egyptian Art before the 19th dynasty. Atem may have bowed to his father as a prince and could have bowed to the gods in the hidden parts of the temples but bowing publicly to people from a foreign land would be unheard of.
So I feel that for Atem, this moment is exceptional. He received exceptional (even divine?) help from four Japanese teenagers from the future. Thanks to them, he has recovered his name, his memories, his identity and thus his status as king. This deserves exceptional behaviour from him towards them.
Atem chooses to bow which is the appropriate way to thank someone in the Japanese culture. By doing so, Atem is showing respect to the country that ‘adopted’ him, showing how much he learnt from Yuugi and the others. It’s also a very humbling gesture for him to do, a way of saying to Yuugi and his friends that he is one of them.
However, at the same time, I also feel that this bow sets Atem apart from Yuugi’s group. It foresees Atem’s departure to the Afterlife. By bowing, Atem shows extreme politeness (especially for him as a king) which can also point to the fact that Atem is keeping his distance by not wanting to be too familiar with them (which would be totally fitting behaviour for a king). It also underlines the fact that, throughout the entire show, Atem was always very reserved with Yuugi’s friends and was never really close to them. Jonouchi never jokes with him the way he does with Yuugi and Anzu never gets annoyed with him while she often tells off Yuugi (in the manga mostly).
Therefore, I feel that in this scene, Atem feels extremely humbled that Yuugi’s friends (not his) put their lives in danger to save his own. And maybe, at this moment, Atem understands that he was truly a part of their group while now he knows that he will have to leave them.
Side note: in the manga, Atem doesn’t bow! KT probably thought Atem was too proud for that, lmao xD.
Something good about dsod lol. Atem literally came to Joey and brought him back like it was nothing. This is by far one of my FAVORITE parts of dark side of dimension that people don’t talk about. That when Joey was feeling lonely, and when he was losing his memories, Atem came and saved him. And it happened naturally because of his sheer love, devotion and feelings for Joey, and all Joey meant to him.
It’s very similar to how Atem came back to Yugi in the end (which I will rant about later).
But like, it didn’t take any type of outworld influence or anything like that. Joey and Atem just had a natural but unique bond. While Joey was best friends with Yugi he was also close to Atem—they were like brothers as well, and at the end of the day Atem helped Joey cope with a lot of things (i.e is abuse, separation from his sister—he was just a healthy outlet for Atem), and I’m sure losing Atem hurt Joey too.
So idk—it just means something huge how effortlessly and easily Atem returned to Joey to save him from whatever the hell Diva was trying to do. And all Joey had to do was think of him and he saved him.
Yugi and Joey both have a special bond with Atem that work so naturally that all they have to do is think about him, or be in any type of peril and he’ll come to them. He doesn’t ever leave them, he is always watching out for them and if they really need or want them, he’ll come to them. There doesn’t have to be any science, or magic (well sorta) involved. It’s just the bond and love they share for one another.
YGO character analysis charts!
Found this at the end of volume 6 of the bunkoban manga, and thought I might share it with tumblr since I’ve never seen it on the internet anywhere?? c: (also everyone loves a good ol’ personality chart amirite)
Takahashi drew up this chart which describes each character’s traits along three different axes:
narcissistic vs altruistic
nonsensical* vs self-restrained/showing self-control
greedy, attached/obsessed vs unselfish/unavaricious, indifferent
Each axis is a continuum moving from one trait to its opposite. The centre of each axis is 0**, and you can score a maximum of 5 points (levels) in either direction.
*The actual word used here is 電波 (denpa) which literally means ‘electromagnetic wave’, but it’s apparently also a slang term for a character archetype describing someone who’s a bit ridiculous/absurd/prone to wild fantasies, etc. The term actually originates from the idea of someone who believes they can communicate via electromagnetic waves. #aliens??
**Also, the centre of the graph (i.e. a score of 0 on each axis) is labelled “ordinary/average person”.
Here’s what each of the characters scored:
MUTOU YUUGI 4/5 altruistic 5/5 self-restrained 2/5 unselfish
YAMI YUUGI 2/5 altruistic 2/5 self-restrained 1/5 unselfish
KAIBA SETO 4/5 narcissistic 3/5 nonsensical 4/5 greedy
JOUNOUCHI KATSUYA 4/5 altruistic 1/5 self-restrained 2/5 greedy
MAZAKI ANZU 3/5 altruistic 3/5 self-restrained 3/5 unselfish
HONDA HIROTO 1/5 altruistic 3/5 self-restrained 1/5 unselfish
BAKURA RYOU 4/5 narcissistic 5/5 nonsensical 4/5 unselfish
YAMI BAKURA 3/5 narcissistic 4/5 nonsensical 5/5 greedy
PEGASUS J. CRAWFORD 4/5 narcissistic 4/5 nonsensical 4/5 greedy
KUJAKU MAI 2/5 altruistic 3/5 self-restrained 3/5 greedy
DINOSAUR RYUUZAKI 3/5 narcissistic 1/5 nonsensical 2/5 greedy
INSECTOR HAGA 4/5 narcissistic 3/5 nonsensical 4/5 greedy
BANDIT KEITH 2/5 narcissistic 1/5 nonsensical 4/5 greedy
MARIK ISHTAR 2/5 narcissistic 2/5 nonsensical 4/5 greedy
YAMI MARIK 4/5 narcissistic 4/5 nonsensical 4/5 greedy
ISHIZU ISHTAR 5/5 altruistic 5/5 self-restrained 4/5 unselfish
I feel like ‘1/5 unselfish’ for someone who sacrificed themselves and puts his needs last most of the time is inaccurate tho.
Atem and Tutankhamun
Kazuki Takahashi was inspired by Tutankhamun for Atem’s character. So I thought I’d do a list of things that both these kings have in common.
a) Both are 18th dynasty pharaohs (Isis confirms this for Atem in manga and in the japanese version of the anime, ep.52).
b) Both are child-kings. King Tut is believed to have become king aroung the age of 8 (give or take a few years) whereas Atem could have become king when he was 11 (depending on how you understand the manga). In chapt. 36 of Millenium World, Mahad says that after he became a priest to the ring, he sensed the evil within it and informed King Aknamkanon, causing him to fall ill and die. As it is also said previously in the manga that Mahad became priest 5 years prior, that would make Atem 11 at the time his father died.
c) Both died in their teen years. King Tut ruled 9 years and a half, making him aroung 18 at his death (again, give or take a few years) and Atem sadly sacrificed himself at 16, after 5 years on the throne. Both of them were burried in the Valley of the Kings.
d) Both had their name erased from monuments and history although the reason for that differs greatly for them both. King Tut suffered the backlash from his father’s, Akhenaten, chaotic rule and was erased from history along with the rest of his close family. Atem, on the other hand, ordered his name to be erased in order to protect his country from the evil god Zork.
e) Both died without an heir and opened the way for a new dynasty to take its place on the throne. Not long after King Tut died, ruled pharaoh Sethy I of the 19th dynasty. As for Atem, he was succeeded by his cousin Seto.
f) Both their mothers’ identities are shrouded in mystery. In truth, we now know more about King Tut’s mother but at the time yu-gi-oh was peing published nothing was known of her and the same goes for Atem’s mother. King Tut’s mother, as revealed by dna, was his father’s sister. So Atem’s mum could be Aknamkanon’s sister.
g) Both had to deal with the mess their father left them and both inherited a kingdom in turmoil. King Tut had to deny his father’s beliefs in the Aten, shifting back to Egypt’s many gods. Atem had to deal with Bakura and the creation of the Millenium Items.
h) Both their father had unique personalities. Akhenaten, although he probably wasn’t truly like that, is often depicted as a peaceful man, who was against war and obsessed with the Aten (the sun-god). Aknamkanon was also described in that maner in the manga, as a good man who believed in justice and who refused to wage war against his enemies.
All in all, Atem and King Tut share so much in common that King Tut’s story could be used as a guideline to know more about Atem’s rule and family.
Priest Seto’s right to the throne
In Yu-Gi-Oh! Millenium World, Atem’s legitimacy to rule is questioned by Aknadin who claims that Seto should be king instead of Atem. Aknadin argues that Priest Seto is of royal blood (as Atem’s cousin) and therefore has a right to the throne.
However, from an ancient egyptian perspective, Seto is not of royal blood and has no more right to be king than Mahad or any of the other priests.
The rules that dictated who could be king and who was part of the royal family were quite different in pharaonic Egypt than what prevails nowadays in modern monarchies.
In Ancient Egypt, the legitimacy to be king derives from the fact that your father was a king. The preference always goes to the children of the latest king to have ruled. So in Yu-Gi-Oh!, only two characters are eligible to be king: Atem and Aknadin as both had a father who ruled Egypt, although Atem is the favoured one out of the two since he is the son of Aknamkanon who ruled last.
From this perspective, Priest Seto is completely out of the line of succession since his father (Aknadin) has never been king. For this same reason, he cannot even be considered a prince of royal blood.
Thus, Atem’s most probable heir, until he had a child of his own, was Aknadin. As Aknadin dies before Atem, that leaves Atem and/or his courtiers to designate a successor. As we all know, Atem chooses Seto which then and only then makes Priest Seto legitimate as pharaoh.
YuGiOh Scenarios I wish we had seen:
Yami sitting on Yugi’s desk, or in a nearby empty desk, listening to Yugi’s history and science lessons in school with twice as much interest as Yugi himself, quietly desperate for any knowledge he can get of the world around him.
Yugi purposefully leaving out his notes so Yami can read them at night, leaving a new subject out every time he finishes one of the older ones.
Yami trying very hard to pick up proper Japanese etiquette but not quite getting it as he only has Yugi around to complain about it. Yami trying to learn modern slang but stopping because he felt too awkward and embarrassed by his own efforts.
Some poor old Japanese lady spotting Yami as a shadow and trying to banish him, thinking he’s evil, but only managing to give Yami the spiritual equivalent of a migraine because the Millennium Items are a bit tougher than a regular evil spirit.
Joey having Yugi leave the puzzle next to him so Yami can’t help him cheat win at Smash Bros. Yami pouted at first but got over it when they let him have a turn next.
Yami trying to figure out how to politely ask Yugi to go to the zoo because he wants to see all the cool exotic animals, but not knowing how to make it seem important enough to spend time on, or what he could offer in exchange for the trip.
Yami acting with almost childlike glee when Yugi takes him there without any negotiations, because of course they can go to the zoo, Yami doesn’t have to bribe Yugi to do something that simple.
Yami asking Yugi what different foods and drinks taste like because he can’t remember them. Yugi letting Yami take over their body once in a while to enjoy the taste of food once again.
Yami’s reaction to snow, or the beach, or the cherry blossoms in Japan.
Basically any scene that actually humanizes Yami/Atem. The serious bit is good and all but nobody is like that all the time.
More YuGiOh Scenarios I wish we had seen:
Yami doing Yugi’s class presentations for him because Yugi is too nervous, and surprising everyone by what a natural speaker he is.
Yugi and Yami watching ghost hunting shows for the lols when Yami realizes he can drain electronic equipment of their power supply in order to touch things. Yami accidentally tripping the breakers to the house in an over-estimation of how much he would need to give Yugi a hug.
Yami abusing his newfound ghost powers to prank his friends.
Yugi struggling not to laugh because he’s the only one who can hear Yami talking shit about someone. Yami making that struggle even harder by doing the “Exaggerated Mimicry of Snobby Person Behind Their Back” thing.
Yami and Yugi having a long conversation about Yami’s experiences in the Puzzle, if only because he needs to tell someone. Yugi being stunned and devastated for Yami when he learns Yami spent thousands of years in solitary confinement and was awake for all of it. Yami finally being able to express his pain and loneliness to someone other than the echoing void of the puzzle.
Yami being the worst influence when it comes to resisting impulses because he doesn’t understand money at all or fully understand danger anymore.
Yami trying to talk Yugi into letting him mind crush Tristan’s dad into understanding his son. Yugi trying to get Yami to understand that you are not supposed to solve problems by brainwashing people. Yami holding a deep resentment for Joey’s parents, and how Joey grew up due to their individual choices.
Grandpa helping Yugi hide Yami’s existence from Yugi’s mom. Yami getting caught by Yugi’s mom, but being mistaken for Yugi himself and having to fake it. Yugi’s mom finding it odd that Yugi suddenly looks taller and has a deeper voice, but not being able to explain it.
Yami, Tea, and Mai all giving Yugi fashion advice and each coming up with wildly different answers.
I would do anything for some OVA episodes where they just have normal school days with Atem, trips out and what happens if Yugi is ill. Just day to day living with a ghost.
New thought.. Yugi borrowed VHS tapes from Jounouchi, which were heavily suggested to be porn. Where was Atem? Did Yugi just send him away when he was watching? How did Yugi even explain what they were? Did he watch them? I have too many questions about this plot point!!
ALL of these!! Also drives me crazy how no one in the canon talks about poor Atem being locked away.
Egyptian Sites in Yu-Gi-Oh!
The Yu-Gi-Oh! characters visit real and fictional places in Egypt. Here is me trying to make a list of these places and trying to figure out what real places might have inspired the fictional ones :)
Valley of the Kings (chapter 279) : Sugoroku Mutou visits the tomb of the Nameless Pharaoh in the Valley of the Kings (near the modern city of Luxor). The Valley of the Kings is the real burial place of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. Atem having his tomb at this particular location is a good point of reference to date his reign to the New Kingdom (between 1400 bc and 1000 bc). The tomb of the Nameless Pharaoh, however, is a fictional tomb since no tomb from the Valley of the Kings have traps as imagined in the manga. Also, the Nameless Pharaoh's tomb seems much bigger than that of Tutankhamun's (who has inspired Atem's character). But its size and design are obviously inspired from other real tombs in the valley of the kings.
City of Luxor/Thebes (from chapter 281 and on) : Atem dives in the Memory World and finds himself in what is most probably the ancient city of Luxor (also Thebes). Although Atem's capital city is not explicitly mentioned by name in the manga, it can be guessed from the fact that the Valley of the Kings seems quite close to Atem's palace, in the storyline. Bakura and Mahad both travel from the palace to the valley in very short times. Also, looking at K. Takahashi's drawings, Atem's city counts a lot of palaces, temples and obelisks. Atem living in Thebes also helps to date his reign more specifically between 1400 bc and 1300 bc (18th dynasty).
Palace of Malqata (?) : Atem's palace should therefore be the Palace of Malqata which was the pharaoh's palace in Thebes at around his time. The Palace of Malqata has disappeared entirely today but has been digitally recreated thanks to archeological digs. Fragments of the wall paintings and ceilings have been recovered and can be seen in different museums throughout the world (or on the internet). The Palace of Malqata was located on the West Bank of the Nile (same bank as the Valley of the Kings). Since Mahad and Bakura are never shown crossing the river Nile, Atem's palace being Malqata makes sense. https://antiqueprofil.wixsite.com/palais3d/en/visitevirtuelle
Deir el-Medineh (?) : Is Kul Elna inspired from the village of Deir el-Medineh ? Deir el-Medineh is the village where the tomb builders used to live. The village is still preserved to this day and is located close to the Valley of the Kings where the men used to work. It is said in chapter 308, that the villagers of Kul Elna were former tomb builders that became thieves. Plus, around 1100 bc, the real tomb builders of Deir el-Medineh were involved in tomb robbery. Although the date doesn't fit well with Atem's reign, it is most probable that this historical event inspired the village of thieves of Kul Elna in yugioh. There is quite a big plothole with this theory though: since the villagers of Kul Elna had turned into thieves by the time of Aknamkanon's reign, who, then, have been building Atem's tomb?? And where have his workers been living??Nevertheless, despite the plothole, the location of Deir el-Medineh, right next to the Valley of the Kings and Malqata, could explain Bakura's aptitude to go from Kul Elna to the valley to the palace in short times.
Atem’s name #2
Atem’s name in hieroglyphs is actually ‘misspelled’ in the yu-gi-oh! anime and manga… It uses a hieroglyphic alphabet made up for tourists.
Here are several ways to write it properly:
And Atem himself could have been using different spellings for all he cared… Or maybe he favoured one spelling more than the others…
Yuugang definitely hides behind Yami when they get spooked
out of cards thursday

Kinda funny how the fact that I don't have a lot of favorites boiled down to the fact that I was crushed by Atem's story and vowed to not get attached to other characters.
In other words, this little fictional character broke my heart so hard that I can't move on. That's how much he made an impact to my fandom life even 2 decades later.
nobody understands this highly popular fictional character at all except for me and my carefully curated panel of mutuals
Thank god for the like five of you 😂
it’s not something I see much any more but like back in the day people would call Atem a self righteous hypocrite when he’s literally the hardest on himself out of like. All of the main characters except for Yuugi. like people fucking HARP on him about the castle wall duel. I still see post after post to this DAY about it. When he literally is so ashamed of it he keeps it sealed inside and Jou yells at him for it and kicks the door and like. Sits down the audience to say “btw there’s been character development for both of them. In case you didn’t know.”
people also harp on him about the thief king when like? Dude? Halfway through memory world it cuts to Dark Bakura and Dark Yuugi role-playing the whole game. The thief king isn’t a character with agency in Memory World. He’s an NPC. And Dark Bakura is Zorc. He has the Thief’s memories but they’re not the same person. It’s a piece of the Thief’s soul. The same way the Rod has Seth’s memories but the actual Guy is standing thirty feet away. Atem even considers giving over the Pendant while the Thief flat out tells the audience no, he’s lying, he’ll still kill everyone anyway. The anime, which changes the thief to Dark Bakura, even flat out has Atem say he’ll take the justice Bakura wants. And then Bakura goes right back to trying to summon a Dark God.
And like? Malik?? Tried to fucking murder Yuugi three times??? Tried to murder Kaiba and Jou??? And Atem didn’t hold a grudge??? Like that wasn’t Dark Malik who did that. That was Malik Fucking Ishtar. Like even after EVERYTHING Atem STILL called them friends. Yuugi flat says he wouldn’t have fired on Ryou. He would have surrendered. He gave Pandora multiple chances to surrender. He didn’t hold a grudge against Kaiba at ALL to the point where it’s JOU who has a hard time with Kaiba because he just doesn’t.
like??? What do you mean self righteous and hypocritical??? He acknowledges he’s wrong when he’s fighting Mai. He says he’s weak and Yuugi was right.
what the hell are you talking about????
When you read a post and all you can express is YES!!! Finally!! Thank you!!
