"I don’t want to look in your eyes someday, and see no spark, no love, no… no life. That would break my heart."
they’d had their souls torn out
[ Reports had come in that Allies would soon swarm their position and they were to be out of the building and on their way to the alpine headquarters before they arrived. Most of the important documents had already been transferred out. What was left were documents that could be destroyed but the orders were to bring everything with them. If they couldn’t then it was to be destroyed and the fire had been started for that task. Eames just had to keep the men working, keep moving the files out because time was quickly running out on them. If they weren’t out of the area before sundown he knew the Allied forces that he’d been told were coming would be upon them. ]
“Bewegen. Jetzt. Wir müssen bei Sonnenuntergang durchgeführt werden. Es sei denn, Sie wollen vom Feind gefangen werden.”
[ A messenger had told them that the Allies had surrounded their building and getting out would be next to impossible. Eames couldn’t let any of that get in his way. Most of the documents had been loaded onto the truck and those left they could destroy with some well placed explosives. He nodded to the boy and told him to start setting explosives in the places they talked about. He needed to bring down the building and destroy anything that the Allied troops could get their hands on. Nothing could be left behind. Not when HYDRA was getting close to winning the war. As much as he questioned just what they were doing he couldn’t deny that the information he’d been able to share both ways had helped out both sides.]
“Sind die Sprengstoffe – “
[ The all too familiar voice had him stopping in his tracks. Steven was the absolute last person Eames had wanted to see. He was supposed to be away from here, with his company. He wasn’t supposed to be there. He wasn’t supposed to see him. Not like this. Even though he knew that Steven knew what he did, neither one of them ever expected this day to ever come. Neither one of them expected their jobs to cross paths like they had. Forcing himself to swallow, he turned around and faced the yank he’d grown to love. It didn’t surprise him one bit to see the gun pointed his direction. That was his job – bring them in for questioning. Except he couldn’t. He couldn’t let himself be captured. ]
“Oder was? Du bist zu spät. Es ist alles weg.”
[ The smirk on his face was meant to cover his feelings of surprise, of shock, and hurt. It was as much a shock to him as it would be for Steven. And his own mission wasn’t close to being done. Eames still had weeks to go before he could sneak back out and return to the nearest Allied camp. He just had to survive one last battle and soon he’d be able to explain to Steven just what had happened. ]
"Jamison..."
[ His rifle lowers as the first name of his love spills from his lips. The soldier's eyes wide as if in utter shock to see the man standing before him, even if he had been warned before the other's departure. It still did nothing to ease the crushing, achy feeling in his chest. It's not so much the words spoken by his love rather than the smirk that followed that seemed to bug the soldier. That same smirk he had witnessed a hundred times before, mostly in the privacy of his own quarters. Yet here he was, acting as if they had never met before. ]
"W-Was zum Teufel machst du hier!?"
[ Steve's voice trembles, as he knows all too well he shouldn't of asked--at least not something he already knew the answer to. Eames had been clear, crystal even as he explained how he managed to work both sides. From there on out the GI mulled it over and over again until it made sense but it didn't. The only conclusion that he came to was that perhaps, in the midst of things, love had blinded him. At that thought Steve grit his teeth, grasping hold tight of the M1 and pointed it towards the thief once more. Whatever awestruck look that was plastered on the Captain's face had been replaced with a seething glare. ]
"Surrender and I won't shoot."
