Ten years of laptop/ipod/phone listening via Last.fm
2017′s digital listening courtesy of Last.fm’s algorithms.
Bill Withers  - Kissin My Love
The groove on this is just ridiculous
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)
Time to get back to Tumblr! Been much too long. Might as well start with this beauty.
Junie RIP
My soundtrack for travelling, cooking and working from 2016 via Last.fm. Dominated by those who have left us.
Happy new year everyone.
NIna Simone - Suzanne (Leonard Cohen)
Magical version.
RIP to an extraordinary songwriter.
Probably I’m not supposed to write about the music at a festival I curate, but something happened in Berlin on Saturday night that made me want to ignore the rules of etiquette. It occurred d…
Can - Don’t Say No
This is not Don’t Say No but it’s very good. Rosko Gee on bass.Â
Bessie Smith - Send me to the 'lectric chair
Hardcore
Rod Temperton RIP
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
Maze Featuring Frankie Beverley - Before I Let Go
this song ...
P-Funk All Stars - Not Just Knee Deep - Live at the Beverly Theatre in Hollywood 1983Â
Bass: Rodney "Skeet" Curtis / Guitars: Michael Hampton, Garry Shider, Eddie Hazel, Cordell Mosson, DeWayne "Blackbyrd" McKnight / Drums: Dennis Chambers / Horns: Benny Cowan (trumpet), Greg Thomas (saxophone), and Greg Boyer (trombone) / Keyboards: Bernie Worrell, Jerome Rogers / Vocals: George Clinton, Garry Shider, Lige Curry, Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, Robert "P-Nut" Johnson, Michael "Clip" Payne, Ron Ford / M.C.: Maceo Parker
A monstrous slab of P-Funk. Kidd Funkadelic lets rip, Skeet/Dennis are just ridiculous ... and then there’s the horns. Prince was there that night and wrote Erotic City straight after.
William Tyler - Highway Anxiety from Modern Country
We don’t really do highways in the UK but this worked beautifully tonight on a long drive. The whole record’s been a pleasure all summer long. Somewhere between Good Dog era Bill Frisell, The Byrds, John Fahey, Jim O’Rourke, early Pat Metheny and the Grateful Dead but with his own signature thing too.
From Lovers on Blue Note
My record of the year so far.
Art Farmer with Jim Hall: Petite Belle 1964
This performance of Art Farmer playing Petite Belle on the British Jazz 625 program showcases his great 1964 quartet with Jim Hall, Steve Swallow and Pete LaRoca. Moving from the high profile quartets of Sonny Rollins and Paul Desmond to Farmer’s group, Jim Hall gave this quartet a special flavor and elegance.

Wonderful!
Rudy Van Gelder 1924-2016
Almost literally the soundtrack of my life. I’ve hundreds of records engineered by Rudy Van Gelder on Blue Note, Impulse!, CTI, Verve, A&M, Prestige and the rest.
This is an excellent interview with Rudy by Michael Cuscuna. Fascinating reflections on working with Alfred Lion, Creed Taylor and Bob Weinstock.
There’s lots of obits for Rudy out there already but this one at the essential Dark Forces Swing Blind Punches is particularly great.
That RVG sound!
RIP
