i think this was necessary for both kieu my and fatou. for one side, fatou needed to let go of that perfect imagine of km she had because their relationship wouldn't work otherwise and in km side we haven't really got any reason of development from her so expecting to act different from the way she did feels unreasonable, but now this works as a wake up call and reason for development on her character.
i mean we all know kieu my doesn't really feel comfortable enough to talk to her friends about this (that's why i believe she didn't and Ismail was the one spreading the rumor) i believe she saw herself between a sword and a wall, that's why she dismissed the kiss as if it wasn't anyhing, she knows how judgmental they all are (she is right), the thing is that fatou heard that and in consequence all this golden place she had kieu my in fell, making her realize kieu my is a person with a lot of flaws, plus, she is fake, her whole ice queen persona is fake.
this means development on both sides, kieu my is going to see why her actions are wrong and how acting this way isn't protecting her but hurting other that she cares about and that means change, also, she now has to prove herself because fatou isn't gonna take her with an apology (like the gif cat, we now now it wasn't Ismail sending it, it was her and she thought it was enough, but it isn't and know she knows that) so yeah, summarizing, it means improvement on her part.
for fatou it means letting go that idea and in general letting go of kieu my and that means development on her as her own person, she now doesn't have to care about km which means caring about her other problems, including her friendships.
