ʿUmar ibn Al-Khattāb رضي الله عنه is reported to have said:

Do not be fooled by one who recites the Qurān. His recitation is but speech – but look to those who act according to it.

"Take heed my son, for your own benefit, and regret your previous shortcomings. Work hard to attain the company of those who have achieved perfection while you still have time.

Water your tree while there is still some moisture left in it, and remember the time you have wasted for that indeed is a sufficient reminder. As time has passed, the delight of laziness has vanished and the levels of virtuous deeds have been missed...

Know, my son, that days consist of hours and hours are made of the breaths you take. Every breath is a treasure chest, so be-ware of letting a breath pass by with no benefit. You do not want to find an empty treasure chest on the Day of Judgment and regret."

Speaking without knowledge

“And follow not that of which you have no knowledge”

[al-Isra’ 17:36].

Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Qataadah said: Do not say, “I saw” when you did not see, or say “I heard” when you did not hear, or “I know” when you do not know, for verily Allah will question you about all of that.

What we may conclude from their comments is that Allah, may He be exalted, forbids speaking without knowledge; in fact He forbids speculation or suspicion, which is based on imagination. End quote.

Tafseer Ibn Katheer (5/75)

Al-Qutaybi said: Do not speak on the basis of speculation and suspicion.

Tafseer al-Baghawi (5/92)

As-Sa‘di (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

That is, do not speak of that of which you have no knowledge; rather make sure that everything that you say or do is based on proper knowledge, and do not think that you will be let off for that. End quote.

مُذنِب

Umm ar-Rubayyi’ bin Khuthaim was very worried about her son.

She rarely saw him sleep, because after the hardships of the day, he spent his nights worshipping God.

She pleaded with him one day: My son, won’t you sleep?

He replied: My mother, when it’s nighttime, and when a person fears that sudden death will overtake him (like it always can), then it isn’t right for him to sleep.

Umm ar-Rubayyi’ soon became afraid when she noticed that her son cried a lot during the night.

She feared that his tears were prompted by feelings of guilt for some wicked crime he committed.

She said: Oh my son, maybe you killed someone?

He answered: Yes.

She asked: Who is he? We’ll go to his family, and (hopefully) they’ll forgive you; surely they’ll pity you when they find out how much you cry every night.

He answered: My mother, it’s myself [who I killed through constantly sinning]!
