Wish I Had Time for My Cold
I have a cold, that I don’t have time for... Wish I did. If I did, maybe then I could stay in bed a little longer or take a nap, or stop moving for a bit. You know! A good old excuse to do nothing! Those thoughts are just fleeting, wishful little specks of what if.. Truth is, I love my life. I love the busy of it. I refuse to get drawn into the stress of it and give it any kind of negative spin.
Don’t get me wrong. There are days that my work (Avon), my kids hectic lives and their girly hormone attitudes, along with keeping up with the house, my husband, the dogs, and friends and my parents, and my brother, and a 1000 other things makes me feel a bit climb the walls, run screaming from the house, crazy. -- Stop!
I figured out that my stress is transferable to oh.... pretty much everyone and everything I just named. Stress is contagious and compounds the feeling of any situation. Over my life, I’ve had to keep re-learning this, sometimes the hard way. -- So, if I’m white knuckled driving Mads to soccer, trying not to be late, even though she made us leave an hour early (she has a puzzling “don’t want to be late” phobia), all the while worried that she didn’t eat enough dinner (at freaking 4:30pm (WHAT?!) so she will have the strength for the 4th night of soccer practice this week, and whether or not she did all of her homework or studied, and it goes on and on. Plus, I’m stressed wondering if she is stressed. WELL, guess what?! She is! The tension in the car is a living creature, setting both our mouths into grim lines, making the muscles in our shoulders bunch up, and generally making it impossible to relax. I look over, she is wide-eyed and white-faced.
What to do? -- Take a few calming breaths, pray that I can throw off the stress, ask her a few unimportant distraction type of questions, such as “Who did you eat lunch with today?” -- “What new things should we get to pack in your lunch” -- “How do you feel about reading the Odyssey your second week of high school” -- “Do you know how much I love you?” -- I’m relieved to get an eye roll at that one, and she’s back to staring at snapchat on her phone. I turn on the radio and let my grip relax on the wheel.
Nope, no time for a cold!
