Pig Authority (American Horror Story: Roanoke âChapter Twoâ)
Whether through a pig roast or a civilized trial, authority sucks. At least it does for Shelby, Matt, Lee, and whatever poor creature pissed off the righteousness of Kathy Batesâ leadership.Â
âChapter Oneâ introduced us to Shelby and Mattâs story, on camera to the audience of âMy Roanoke Nightmare.â After a gang physically assaulted Matt, prompting Shelby to miscarry, they moved from L.A. to a quiet country home in Roanoke Island, North Carolina to emotionally heal. However, in âChapter Twoâ Shelby and Matt begin to learn the true history and nature of their happy home.
The inciting incident of âRoanokeâ isnât so far from American Horror Storyâs Season One âMurder House,â but thatâs not where the similarities end. This weekâs episode brought back the Piggy Man, an urban legend who will slaughter anyone who repeats âHere Piggy Piggyâ three times in front of a mirror.
But the pig man is far more gruesome and real in this installment, as when Shelby ran into a pilgrim-y-dressed cult at the end of last weekâs episode. Led by Kathy Bates, the âqueen of every hive, the fire on every hill, the shield over every head,â and assisted by a rabid Lady Gaga, the group execute a man for deserting his colony by nailing a pigâs tail to his ass, sawing his hands and feet to hooves, stacking a pigâs head on his own, and roasting him over the campfire.
And this is how we start the show. Unfortunately, after those opening moments, the episode slows its pace, forcing the audience to acquire unbelievable faith in the charactersâ stupidity in staying in the house: âitâs amazing how long a person can rationalize the irrational,â Matt says.
Mattâs awakening moment comes when he witnesses the murder of an elderly woman by the two ghostly nurses from the first episode. These ghastly events prompt Shelby and Matt to follow a pilgrim figure outside to a cellar where they find the tapes of Academic Elias Cunningham (Denis OâHare), whoâd moved to the house in 1997 to complete his book âHelter Skelter.â Apparently, his subjects were the two previously-seen nurses, who joined together to open an assisted living house for the elderly, just so they could murder their patients based on the first letter of their name.
Like a game to them, they killed together to spell out the word âmurder,â though they only got to âMURDEâ before they disappeared. Their story evokes a kinship with the New York Alphabet Murders, which brings a terrifyingly energetic background to the house. Furthermore, according to Cunningham, the house had been empty 15 years prior to his moving in, when a family had resided for a couple of months before suddenly vacating. Their story should be interesting also.
Meanwhile Lee struggles to reconnect with her daughter, Flora, but when dad Mason hears that Florâs âfriendâ in the house, Priscilla, told her everyone in the house will die, he resolves to take her away. Leeâs inability to truly see that her actions are hurting everyone leads to her breaking her sobriety, when the piggy man comes. Â Unfortunately, we kind of leave that at that. And the next day, sober but still crazy, Lee kidnaps Flora and manages to lose her. As the three of them run throughout the woods searching for her, Lee screams. Floraâs jacket is swinging from the top of a tall Pine Tree.
âChapter Twoâ was unimpressive, as we delve into the backstory of the house, which was excitedly fascinating but poorly divulged. âMurder Houseâ was able to weave the history of the house into the very fabric of the charactersâ plots and the setting. âRoanokeâ however, fails to connect all of the puzzle pieces together.
Legal ties bind all of our characters, whether to the house through un-refundable real estate deals, or to isolation through custody issues. The barbaric trial in the woods, in contrast, liberates the colonies from the constraints of civilized authority. I wonder how this will play into the rest of the season.
Stray Observations:
OâHareâs character is raw and crazed, but he enunciates his words so perfectly to show his academic background. Heâs amazing.
Matt doesnât trust Shelby. He asks the doctors to give her a drug test. What in her history might have influenced his decision in this?
The real Lee admits her faults on-camera; itâs interesting to see that sheâs not ignorant of the wrongs sheâs committing, but itâs also interesting that it doesnât seem like she truly cares.
The bonnet with the broken lamp is very creepy.
I looked up that symbol that we keep seeing (what I call the Blair Witch symbol); this is what it said: A five-pointed compound symbol with a center triangle pointing down. The five lines resemble the microcosmic man with arms and legs outstretched inside a circle (with a pentagram in the background); a magic symbol or charm among medieval alchemists and wizards.
The pig squealing is genuinely creepy.
The pig tails spelling out âPiggyâ are great!
The houseâs overly spacious rooms, high ceilings, and unnecessarily tall fireplaces create the sense of isolation, similar to the surroundings of the house.

5 Things You Didnât Know About The Roanoke Colony | The Mystery Behind Season 6 of âAmerican Horror Storyâ
This isnât the first time weâve heard about âRoanokeâ on American Horror Story; Sarah Paulsonâs psychic character, Billie Dean Howard, in Season 1âs âMurder Houseâ claimed âCroatoanâ as a part of a demon-banishing spell that Violet (Taissa Farmiga) then uses to banish Chad (Zachary Quinto) and Patrick (Teddy Sears) from the house.
However, Season 6 seems to be focusing on uncovering the truth behind the connection between the lost Roanoke Colony and Croatoan (a small Native American group residing in the Roanoke territory). Billie Dean Howard claimed the Natives used the word to banish the ghosts that remained from the Roanoke Colony, and after seeing that Violetâs use of the spell didnât work, perhaps the charm didnât work for those ancestors either, judging by the apparition of Kathy Bates in âChapter One.â
So, hereâs a bit of history to make this season make a little more sense:
1. Sir Walter Raleigh Established The Roanoke Colony
Sir Walter Raleigh, known prominently for founding Virginia and speculating exaggeratingly about the âCity of Goldâ after an expedition to El Dorado, dispatched two expeditions from April 1584 â April 1585 to explore the Northeast Coast of America, landing on Roanoke Island; the second, led by a Sir Richard Grenville.
The settlers encountered many problems with the local natives (Secotan and Crotoan peoples), as well as issues with food supplies. However, Grenville decided to take a group of the settlers to establish a colony at the north end of Roanoke Island, leaving behind the Roanoke Colony. He promised to return with additional men and fresh supplies, and left in August 1585.
A passing expedition offered to take some colonists back to England, and they accepted. So, when Grenville returned with supplies, the colony was abandoned and he left a small group to protect Raleighâs claim on Roanoke Island before he left to England.
2. When The Roanoke Colony was Checked On By Another Expedition, They Were Missing
In 1587, Raleigh dispatched another group of colonists led by John White, who were ordered to check on the Roanoke Colony. When they arrived, all traces of the settlers were missing, save for one skeleton.
John White established his colony in place, even becoming grandfather to the first English child born in America. White then decided to leave behind a group of settlers to return to England.
3. Left Alone Again, The New Roanoke Colony Disappeared  Â
When White returned in August 1590, all traces of the 115 colonists were gone. The only clue left was the word âCROATOANâ carved into a post of the fence around the village.
Before he had left, White had instructed the colonists, that should anything happen, to carve a cross on a tree nearby to indicate their absence had been forced. Although White believed the word âCroatoanâ was meant to mean the colonists had moved to the nearby Croatoan Island, he was unable to complete a search due to storms.
4. Although Most Historians Attribute The Disappearance to Bloody Relations With the Natives, Accounts Indicate Otherwise
Writer Thomas Harriot wrote descriptions of the land and surroundings in his book A Brief and True Report of the New Founde Land of Virginia, which included depictions of Native American activities. at the time of the colonyâs disappearance. These reports show that the relations between the Roanoke Natives and the English Settlers was actually calm.
Additional investigations into the disappearance of the Roanoke Colony were unsupported.
5. Theories of the Disappearance
Captain John Smith (the real-life individual that Pocahantasâ John Smith was based on), allegedly learned from Chief Powhatan that Powhatan had ordered the slaughter of the Lost Colonists, while they had been living peacefully with the natives.
Some theorists posit that the Lost Colony survivors integrated into the local tribes based on reported sightings of English captives at various Native settlements during this time period. In fact, descendants from the natives claim to be descended from the English colonists of Roanoke. They were described as âgray-eyedâ American Indians. Seems interesting now that Sarah Paulsonâs characters has such distinct grey eyes.
Other theorists believe the Spanish settlers in Florida wiped out the colony.
Whichever theory is true, itâs now up to âAmerican Horror Storyâ to spin a web of truth and fiction that will frighten the bravest of us.Â

I Miss Nick Jonas [Scream Queens S02E01 âScream Againâ]
Observations:
We begin Halloween 1985; almost the same premise but in a hospital. Â All the doctors are busy partying and a pregnant womanâs husband is dying.
Jerry OâConnell (!!!), in a green plastic demon mask as the contrast to The Red Devil in last season, is the only guy who can save the dude! Too bad heâs more interested in partying.
What was the point of getting rid of his costume in the swamp? Wouldnât that incriminate him further if they already saw him?! Scream Queens logic, lol.
Doctor Dean Cathy Munsch! Haha! Iâm dying!
Munsch got her honorary doctorate from Pennsylvania State after they stripped it from Bill Cosby. Jamie Lee Curtis is killing it with this insane dialogue!
Taylor Lautnerâs characterâs name is Dr. Cassidy Cascade!
Taylor Lautner needs to step it up a bit. He needs coaching from the Gilmore Girls to keep up with this fast talk. Makes me miss Nick Jonas.
OMG, the Chanels got their own Netflix Documentary: Entrap a Kappa Kappa: Murder on Sorority Row
Poor Hester, she canât make double jeopardy a thing.
Iâve died once again. The Chanels decided to be Communications majors because itâs the easiest! But then they canât get jobs.
Jamie Lee Curtis in that mediocre-as-hell house is wonderful! Also, what the heck is she up to?
âI got into medical school all by myself, which took a year and a half, and was really hard!â â ZayDay
Lol, Chanel #3âs face when John Stamos (aka Dr. Brock) was showering!
Chanel's explanation of ghosting is amazing.
The campiness of the show hit overdrive once the Chanels came in, and it just feels wonderful to be back.
This John Stamos and Emma Robers scene is making me so uncomfortable.
Dr. Brocks hand is evil!
Was ZayDay really on board for a lobotomy?! She really lost her edge.
Chanel #3 is wearing latex gloves as earmuffs! Iâve died and gone to heaven!
âI spent a full night flirting with Dr. Brock to find a cure for you!â â Chanel Oberlin
A makeover! The Go-Gos!
he Chanelâs outfits are en pointe. I love the numbers on their headbands.
This nonsensical dialogue is exactly what makes the show so great.
Chanel #5 is still the poopy-shit on the other Chanelâs shoes. :/
This hydrotherapy bathub is super shady.
Haha! Chanel #5 and Cecily Strong (Werewolf Girl) getting stuck reminds me of the buried pledges in Season 1.
The Green Demon (is this what theyâll call him?) had to play my favorite song by âThe Crystals!â
Chanel #5âs screaming is so irritating, but I also kind of love it! I really hope The Green Demon spares her.

unREAL: horror-style [American Horror Story: Roanoke âChapter 1â Review]
Iâve always had a deep appreciation for metafiction in literature and in film, as shown by my love for Scream; so, when âChapter 1â illuminated American Horror Storyâs Season 6 mystery concept as a faux docu-series in the spirit of Discovery Channelâs âA Haunting,â I raised my hallelujah hands to the ceiling.
For those unfamiliar to âA Haunting,â the anthology TV series depicts eyewitness accounts of paranormal activity through re-enactments.
And so âMy Roanoke Nightmare,â the paranormal documentary series within our beloved AHS depicts the story of a married couple who move to a house in Roanoke Island, North Carolina where strange occurrences begin to haunt them.
Lily Rabe and Andre Holland portray the real Shelby and Matt Miller as they unfold their tale through an on-camera interview, while the audience of âMy Roanoke Nightmareâ (MRN) and we, the audience of AHS, watch their story be reenacted by Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr.
While Ryan Murphy and Bradley Falchuck share the credit as writer, itâs Bradley Bueckerâs talent as director that perfectly encapsulates the juxtaposition of the striking mundane reality in the on-camera interviews with the AHS house-style of rich and graphic storytelling in the reenactments.
The show places Matt and Shelby in a house unlike the âMurder Houseâ of Season 1: beautiful, old, and with a dark history. The immediate dangers come in the form of Shelbyâs isolation as Matt travels for his work, hate crime actions from the neighboring hillbillies, and ghostly apparitions including spooky women and raining teeth.
After Shelby is nearly drowned in her hot tub by a ghostly figure, Mattâs sister, Lee (played by Adina Porter of âTrue Bloodâ and re-enacted by Angela Bassett) comes to stay with them.
Slaughtered pigs, torch-carrying hillbillies, odd videotapes of a former inhabitant as he runs from some terrifying enemy (played by Denis OâHare), and finally the appearance of a witch-y cult led by Kathy Bates and Wes Bentley culminate in a head-spinning array of conflicts with no answer as to what it all means. But perhaps this season of AHS is made to scratch our heads and hoard the resolutions just as âMy Roanoke Nightmareâ aims to indulge their audience with a mystery.
âChapter 1â scattered the plot, though it wouldnât be different from any other âA Hauntingâ episode. What improves the episodeâs existence though is this ingenious framing device. Â
My first instinct was to rate the episode 5 out of 5 Screams, believing that in true anthology docu-series style, this season would showcase a different story relating to Roanoke in each episode. However, upon viewing the trailer for âChapter 2,â it seems that we will be continuing Shelby and Mattâs story; though, thereâs always hope that Chapter 3 will pick up the anthological structure.
