The Lost Colony of Roanoke Is Established

On July 22, 1587, a new English settlement was established on Roanoke Island, off the coast of present-day North Carolina. Led by Governor John White, this was England’s second attempt to create a colony in the region, following the earlier failed settlement of 1585–1586.

The colonists hoped to build a permanent English presence in the New World, but their struggle for survival soon became one of history’s greatest mysteries. When John White returned from England in 1590, the settlement had vanished, leaving behind only the mysterious word “CROATOAN.”
