drkarenpotter:
I don’t spin.
“Why not? It’s a fun thing to do.” Kim pointed out, “Then again, I’m not on the Peds floor, so I don’t really have a lot of supporters here so I guess I see your point.”
tinydocalena:
“You want me to spin in this weather? Can we just get coffee and sit by the fire and ya know, be warm and talk?”
“We can do that.” Kim shrugged her shoulders softly, “It’s been a good day. A good week even. So I’m a little happier than usual.” She stilled, smiling at the younger doctor, “Coffee cart’s this way. Shall we?”
docjamesp:
No thank you I think I’ll pass, but I am happy to sit here and enjoy it with you”
“Fine. Sit there and be boring.” Kim narrowed her eyes playfully as her yes flickered to the sky, “Looks like it’s going to rain today. Better get ready; those road slides will keep us here all night.”
dr-laine-thompson:
I love this weather. It’s like the last kiss of summer or something like that…
“Exactly, thank you.” Kim nodded gratefully towards Laine, “I’ve been getting the weirdest looks all day. Seattle Winter is a different kind of winter. Not everyone can enjoy it.” Kim rambled as she finally stilled, “I definitely like you a little more for agreeing with me.”
“The weather is actually gorgeous. Adam like to spin when the weather is good. You should spin with me.”
karevmd:
“What are you doing here?”
“Trying to sleep. Trying being the key word.” Kim muttered from under the pillow before she sat up, “Are you on call tonight?”

“I’m sure,” He nods. “Scan’s came back clear, no neuro deficits. My body just has to recover,” Derek says. “I can’t wait to see him.” Chuckling, he shrugs. “Well, good, getting him ready for his career early. You were in hospitals young and look at you know,” He teases, though his brow furrows together. “He must’ve fallen hard? To have to come here?”
It was no surprise that she was relieved - and she knew if he of all people had been sure of the scans then she could finally breathe. “Career already, oh I don’t know, he’s more interested in picking up after superman.” Kim shook her head softly as her hand patted over his, “It was a small laceration. Alex Karev took care of it.” She smiled thoughtfully, “And he managed to calm Adam down before I got there. Like magic. Or well, not magic, superpowers.” Kim quickly corrected, smiling fondly.

Derek holds back a raised eyebrow as she moves, sitting on the bed, brushing back his hair. The actions of someone that was a parent, a mother. He knew she was one, of course. He’d watched her become one, and he’d watched her with Adam. But she’d still been the little girl she’d always been, some how. Despite her having a child older than some of his own, she was still a little girl. His little girl. Derek guessed it was just what happened when you had siblings so much older than you. He’d been 16 when Kim was born, had been in the room with her. And somehow, throughout the years, he’d stepped up when his sister’s ex husband hadn’t. They’d always had a special bond, and faced with her now, he realized how grown up she’d gotten. Life had taken so much from her, pushed her down so many times. But she was here. She was a great mother, doing it all herself. And a great surgeon. She’d grown up. “It’s fine,” He says softly finally.
Kim tilted her head a bit when he said he was fine, “Are you sure?” She asked again, because she knew once her pager went off she won’t be able to check on him again until it was time to go home. “Because you can just page me I’ll be here all night, okay?” Kim assured him as she retracted her hand and held his between both her own. “Adam keeps asking to see you, but I told him I’ll bring him when you feel more strong.” Kim told her uncle, though her face had been serious when she said that, “He’s surprisingly calm about being in a hospital though. I think that’s a very promising thing.” Kim joked playfully, “The other day, he fell at school and the teacher brought him here. He’s been wearing his cape ever since.”

Derek frowns softly as he watches her, seeing how she tries to reign herself in, stop herself from crying, and how it doesn’t work in the end. He smiles gently at her at the mention of going through worse. Yes, unfortunately they had. “I know,” He says softly, when Kim admits she was really scared. Dad. She so rarely called him that, it was clear when she did that she was scared. “I know you were. But I’m here, and I’m ok, I’m fine,” Derek says softly, holding tightly to her hand. “I’m fine, Kimmy. It’s all ok.”
It’s fine. How many times had she heard those words, and in the end, something bad always had happened. Kim always kept her chin up and walked in a straight clear line to make way for a healthy life for her son, from the moment she discovered he’d been growing inside her she’d been dodging curve ball after curve ball. But it was beginning to get overwhelming and the waves just kept growing stronger and stronger and Kim didn’t know if her walls could hold it at bay.
Her eyes turned towards the ceiling as she wiped the few stray tears that had managed to escape, breathing in slowly then out - count to five, breathe slow, then she turned her eyes to her uncle again. “It’s all okay.” She nodded along as she pressed her lips into a soft smile, she moved now to sit at the edge of the bed, her free hand moving carefully over his head, brushing his hair back gently, “Do you need anything? How do you feel? How’s your head?”

Kim: He's had his cape on for three days now so I'm gonna say pretty great.

Derek watches her move closer, how her eyes well with tears, the shift in her voice. “Hey, hey, hey,” He says gently, moving his other hand to rest against the one holding onto his. “It’s ok,” Derek says softly. “I am, I am awake. And I’m ok. Tired and weak but that’s normal,” He says almost bitterly, though he smiles. “I’m here. I’m ok. I’m not going anywhere,” He promises her softly. “Not anytime soon.”
Kim turns her hand to hold his when he moved it to her hand, sitting up a little so she could see his face better in the dimmed light. His face was pale - so pale he was almost unrecognizable. Kim nodded as he spoke, “You really scared us..” Kim whispered as she turned her eyes to the ground, trying to get a grip of her own emotions, she didn’t want to break in front of him once she’d kept it all inside for that whole time. Kim inhaled deeply, closing her eyes before she straightened up again, “But I kept telling them you’d wake up.” She continued as she pressed her lips into a hard smile, or at least she tried to smile.
“Because you know, we’ve been through worse.” She added, but the stability in her voice she’d only had briefly wavered again and she breathed out a small sob, “We’ve been through worse and you’re not supposed to leave us just yet.” She whispered between her sobs, and she felt her resolution break as she spoke in a small voice, “I was really scared, dad.”

doctor-derekshepherd:
It always seemed ironic that after being in some form of sleep for extended periods, so much sleep was necessary. Despite being in a coma for 21 days, he could only remain awake for a few hours at a time before the exhaustion set in. It was annoying, he already wanted to go home. Gratefully, after a few glares, Molina had said he didn’t need the constant heart monitoring. He wasn’t tied down to the bed with tubes and wires, just an IV. Derek is dosing in one of his many naps when he feels eyes on him, and he starts awake, jumping a little when he really does see someone there, a hand around his own. Taking a deep breath, he sees his niece. “Hey Kimmy,” he smiles gently.
Kim leaned forward so that she could rest her cheek against the bed rails, she stared at the crow’s feet at the edges of his eyes, the signs of age that made him look too old, too old beyond his own years. Her eyes flickered down to his hand as she held it, wondering what must have been in his mind, where he went at such a late hour at night, and why did he need that time alone -- no Kim knew why. She’d been through this before. She’d been through the late night drives and walking aimlessly during times square and sometimes wondering by that white picket fence house she never got to live all these idealistic pictures she’d fashioned inside her mind’s eye.
The jolt startled her, she quickly lifted her head off the rails. Dumbstruck for a moment, she stared at her uncle as he called her nickname, and suddenly she was eighteen years old again, lost and confused, with a million emotion running inside her it was hard to find to truly focus one. “Hey.” She breathed out, but her voice wavered as she pulled the chair closer, scooting towards the bed so that she could place her other hand over his arm, “They said you were awake.” She whispered, the tears quickly welling up in her eyes, “I just wanted to check on you.”

The ICU had to be the most deprecating place in the hospital. The soft beeps of heart monitors, the pumps of the ventilation machine, the occasional roll of a nurse’s chair as she moved from her desk to check on the patient then again reside her position at her desk. The place was so morose, the air was still, and at night the lights were dimmed. The night shift doctors were always ready to bolt out of their on call rooms should any of these patients start to code. The tension was so palpable it was almost suffocating. But Kim knew she didn’t have to be in the ICU.
Her uncle’s room was a private room -- no glass doors, she couldn’t just linger outside and pretend this wasn’t happening. She didn’t even know if he had been asleep or awake. Her hand carefully turned the knob, making sure not to make too much noise as she slid into the room. There were no more tubs. No more ventilation machines. Just the usual. And he was resting, steady breaths, eyes closed. The injuries were still there of course, but he wasn’t in a coma any more. The dam that had held all those emotions at bay began cracking, but Kim gathered her wits as she moved to sit at the seat beside her uncle’s bed.
Five years ago, she’d been the one unconscious in a hospital bed, and her uncle had been the one at her bedside, waiting for her to wake up, to recover. Kim hadn’t expected, or wanted, the tables to turn, but they had, and all she could do was place her hand over her uncle’s, holding it gently enough not to disturb him as she stared at his face.

Let me take a look at that
docjamesp:
“Maybe so but I’m still going to tell you, now I’m going to go get a bandage so that I can do your foot up. Is there anything else you’d like me to get?” he asked as he stands up and walks over to the door.
“Well, since you’re asking, a dognut from the cafeteria sounds swell right about now.” Kim kept her foot propped up on the chair as she gave James a small smile, “Thank you.”

docjamesp:
Once I’ve done your foot up, you to try to keep the weight off of it as much as you can”
I know the drill, James, I have an MD.
Let me take a look at that
docjamesp:
Locking the door James walks over to her bringing a chair with him, sitting down he lifts her foot onto his lap and takes a look at it. “You’ve just sprained your ankle will you let me go get a bandage so that I can wrap this up?”
Kim flinched again when he examined her ankle, “Yeah, okay, do what you gotta do.”
