Fandom staff just removed me from admin/owner of the old Fifth City site, citing their "forking policy" - of which I was never informed, but it does specify that departing admins will be removed from the Fandom side of a fork. In other words, since I was the only admin at that point, Fandom has taken control of the old wiki.

Grace Hopper did more than coin the term “bug”. She invented the first program linker in the early 1950s, for the UNIVAC I. A program linker translates instructions from one language to another (for example, numerical codes that represent instructions translated to machine code that computers can read), which is the very foundation of how computer’s operate independently. she also pulled a steve rogers and tried to enlist in the military a bunch of times and was denied. then, an exception was made for her when she joined the navy reserves, and she ended up serving for over 40 years (half of which was active duty). she retired from the navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper. she was born in NYC in 1906. Grace Hopper was a fucking badass.

also computing was typically a job for women (many of whom were black women that made incredible contributions) back in the day, so it’s absolutely fucking wild that straight white men think they are the foundation of computer innovation. men PUSHED women out and took the credit.

Also gotta throw on Lynn Conway, whose work brought about VSLI [Very Large Scale Integration] in chip design in the early 80s. Basically all modern microelectronics depends on Conway’s work, which got logic gates on a single chip up from thousands to millions.

BTW all of this was after IBM fired her in 68 for disclosing she wanted to transition. They apologized in 2020.

in law school, my mom took me to this stress retreat because my family was vaguely aware i was a suicide risk. and they didnt allow phones, so i brought this huge bag of books. and one of the options for "destressing" was this fake cave grotto thing, where they'd decorated a room to make it look exactly like an underground cave and the air was like -10 degrees, but there was a like 4ft deep pool in the middle that was kept super super hot, so you would just switch between the hot and cold. and they would bring you an endless supply of this weird syrupy drink thing that was like super caffeinated and tasted like sugar and mint. and so i spent multiple days sitting half submerged in this fake grotto drinking mystery liquid and reading. and i have to be honest i really did feel less stressed

PSA: if you want to describe a story as a 'Romeo and Juliet' story, please do make sure that the two houses are alike in dignity.

The original reasons the two houses hate each other - if there ever were any - are otherwise left unspecified, but the one thing that gets made clear right at the start is that those reasons are not socioeconomic differences. Please consider alternative cultural references to describe a forbidden romance between people of different socioeconomic status. There are a whole bunch of those too.

Fascinated by House MD as a time-capsule encapsulation of mid-20aughts gender politics. in the sense that it is A) deeply, deeply misogynistic, B) surprisingly okay with gay people when depicted, C) obsessed with male-male relationships so intense that they verge on homoeroticism, and D) believes that the best way to defang C while synthesizing A and B is a sense of ironic detachment wherein any two men who are sufficiently close must constantly reference the possibility of their own gayness as a joke in order to establish that while gay people exist, the very idea of these two specific men being gay is so impossible as to be mocked as ridiculous. No homo via joke homo. The overwhelming sense is that the writers belive that neither House nor Wilson is capable of ever having a successful relationship with a woman or really anyone at all besides each other, but also the idea that House and Wilson could be gay is really funny and anyone who believes that is stupid, which must be reinforced by referencing it constantly. The queerbait of a bygone era.
