𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐓 - 𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐀𝐑𝐄, 𝐆𝐀𝐙𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐓𝐎𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 … demacia, as far as sylas knew, held on to doubt when they could let go and channel their energy towards recovery; like a mother clinging to memories of something loved and lost, knowing it will only cause her grief.
where, who, what, when — those are questions that sylas has no desire to learn and instead he focuses on the why, on the banter between death, in the harsh, mocking cries of wolf’s jaunting laughter and the chiming, covetous tones when lamb answers back. it is a language that he can understand, just barely, mortal and yet not, like if he tried to speak it himself his vocal cords would twist and choke and his tongue would fall limp. he ignores their words, their jabs at how, and offers platitude.
“ so my hunt births no desire. ” a pity. sylas allows the disappointment to be felt in his body, in the way his shoulders rise, and then they fall, a careless shrug. “ and it will be mine alone. ” he falls quiet, like he dares to offer death more, and that is quite a foolish game to play, yet he has never been one to simply beg and then fall.
“ and yet … you say you hunt those not living … ” questioning in tone, daring to be the rat the cat with its tail, and how proudly he stands, tall despite the chains weighing him down ( decisions, o’ so many, like picking a single fish in an ocean of opportunities ) ! there is a tale, a piece of theatre, that used to be quite popular in demacia. orphellum mechanicals, it was called, but the meaning behind the name of the play eluded sylas. the death of the star actress was known though for it had travelled even to the province of dregbourne where he had been but a young boy hearing of the whispers of the lady who took lamb’s arrow on the stage.
“ … then i would offer those running. ”
his revolution was not quiet. it was a loud, shattering roar against demacia’s meager cries, like a wave washing away everything and leaving naught but new land to build upon, and soil was always best when it had been wet with blood.
“ running from the truth, ” when after comes, and he knows it will come, he will worry, but for now he must think of the present, “ running from fate ! tell me, death; will you stand in the shadows while i prepare you a hunt ? they will run, and i will offer you a chase. ” a true demacian would take lamb’s arrow, but sylas knew that none in the current land were true — and thus wolf’s jaws would find purchase much easier … should death agree.
❝ all hunts birth desire, ❞ wolf snaps, the curve of his teeth exposed in making the distinction, it offending him for a time before it amuses him, the man so confident, so sure, and so boring, yet standing there still, listening. how invested could one man be, in an uncertain future? not begging for life, but begging death to walk beside him? he had escaped, escaped, escaped, his life clutched in his hands, and yet here he is … ❝ not as exciting as you had hoped? ❞ lamb asks, and wolf just shakes his head, salivating for something else, something more … something beyond.
it is kindred’s way to ask and to toy, to play and to question – but the young man with revolutionary thoughts pulls at hearts that no longer stir, finds a way to offer up their interests in the interest of his own. a demacian and yet not on his knees, a demacian and yet offering a chase more akin to wolf’s hunger. wolf does not like the hunts supplied for him – does not like the way the man schemes with fervor, as if those listening were the humans he knew. a hunt is only a hunt if they don’t know you’re coming, and this man is sure to never be silent.
( ‘tell me, death –’ they say, and his hands are wrung and tired, for people came to him with wants or needs, with fear or little else. tell me, death – why do you come for me? and tired, he wishes they knew it was easier to go in company than alone. ) lamb closes her eyes and wolf comes underneath the open palm of her hand: a comfort. ❝ i see now why you can lead a revolution, sylas, ❞ she says, her voice tender, like a mother consoling a child, ❝ but we are kindred, and what we will say once, we will not say again. ❞
❝ you are a man. a passionate, powerful man – ❞ she looks to his chains before looking back up at him, ❝ – but a man, none the less. you offer once again, considering even kindred a potential ally in your man-made hunt. but … ❞
❝ … but they will not be running from fate, they will be running from you. ❞ wolf answers, voice a low growl. ❝ a job that should be mine. ❞
❝ a job, ❞ lamb interjects, the warmth filtered out for a chill, ❝ that a man cannot create. you mock us with your petty revolution, sylas. tell us, will you run too? ❞
wolf raises his head, lips pulled back in a toothy smirk. one breath, two, three, he could smell the beat of sylas’ heart. how the spirit it wishes it would quicken, would fall tightly into the harsh grip of his jaw. ❝ he wants to be the better demacian, doesn’t he? ❞
❝ the victors always determine whats better, wolf. ❞ lamb answers, standing with her grip still tight on her quiver. ❝ and he has not yet won. ❞

PRIMARY: THE CHARIOT.
“ one of life's greatest blessings is the freedom to pursue one's goals. ”
the chariot arcana is a symbol of victory, conquest, self-assertion, control, war and command.
you are typically a very driven individual, who has a personal goal that you aim to achieve at any cost. it is not uncommon for chariot characters to be short-tempered or aggressive.
SECONDARY: THE HERMIT.
“ it requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path... ”
the hermit arcana is associated with wisdom, introspection, solitude, retreat and philosophical searches.
you place yourself in situations that hide you from the public eye. hermit individuals hide away from others or act in more supportive roles rather than putting themselves in the spotlight.
TERTIARY: THE EMPEROR.
“ only courage in the face of doubt can lead one to the answer... ”
the emperor arcana symbolizes the desire to control one's surroundings, and its appearance could suggest that one is trying too hard to achieve this, possibly causing trouble for others; some elements in life are just not controllable.
often times, you are troubled by something very personal, and don't know how to deal with it.

inumbrate:
zed had told him to steer clear of the woods and outskirts of the encampment… but children and curiosity were a combination long known to dance dangerously close. zed had told him he had to be prepared to train dutifully later that day… but the child craved to create his own freedoms, however temporary.
kayn listened with an attentive ear to their conversation and even with lamb’s word of caution in regard to wolf? he still braves the profference of attention as his small hand reaches to pat gently atop wolf’s head. a small tilt of his head meets with his response to the feeling beneath scarred digits, it felt like the call of shadows if as much could provide something physical to touch… if that made any sense, he was uncertain — to his mind, it felt as though the only manner of relating the sensation to something he knew.
❛ you’re like the shadows! ❜ the boy exclaimed whether they know of how he can embrace shadows and move through them or not ; golden eyes widen and brighten as he smiles as an excited child might at wolf. he then pauses, tilting his head further with a tiny hum. ❛ … i mean, you’re soft, but there’s some special to the way you’re soft. ❜ he nods as if this constitutes clarifications or explanations.
the small hand smooth against head elicits a low thrum from wolf’s throat, foreign fingers tracing the usual taut, violent lines of his features. it is a tenderness not often, if ever, spared for kindred, and the foreign nature of it calms wolf’s hunger -- if only for a moment.
❝ the shadows? ❞ wolf growls, and lamb shakes her head.
❝ we are spirits, child, ❞ lamb explains, ❝ we are less beholden to our vessels than you. ❞ she bends down at her knees, looking at kayn at eye level through the burn of her mask. ❝ is that what you mean by shadows? ❞
❝ the little human said i’m soft! ❞ wolf interrupts, proud at this assessment though he would, at any other point, be frothing at the mouth, claws digging into the ground and accepting of compliments that spoke of his frightening demeanor, of his ferocity, of his savagery. this time though, he finds descriptions of his vessel to be more to his taste, as although the screams about his teeth or his claws were old, tired things. this is new. new and exciting.
kindred, on the other hand, only stays remarkably still: patient as she is in all things, she allows kayn time for an answer.
kindred does not often linger, but without wolf, cagey, darting about or pacing, growling about the hunt, lamb is moved to stay. stay for as long as wolf could handle; stay for as long as the child looks to them and is not afraid.
kindred chatters, their dual gaze focused on the child who without fear reaches his small palm towards wolf’s nose, who looks at lamb with clear eyes. a child is a head full of stories, of a parent’s tale of warning, of fear enough to make most humans shy away. but the child has no parent to tell this tale, so the child knows nothing: instead he moves ever forward, simultaneously an insult and a wonder.
❝ take care, child, for wolf is not one to be pet, ❞ lamb notes, even as wolf has materialized his front legs, head bowed to take the small child’s attention. kindred is avoided in an inevitable way: no soul wishes to meet them in the fear of being taken, of being hunted, but this small child with scars already on his palms, calloused and bruised, is a small mercy. ❝ wolf, there is a hunt to finish, but you seem occupied. ❞
gruff, wolf answers, ❝ the hunt will stay, this child will not. ❞ he’s right, of course, and so lamb is willed to silence. she wonders how long innocence might last. she wonders if this rarity teaches wolf a rare patience.

𝐀 𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐑, 𝐀 𝐅𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐂𝐇, 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐘𝐄𝐓 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇 𝐅𝐄𝐋𝐓 … cold and warm at the same time, an ember about to give out, ferocious yet gentle, like breathing in icy air and spewing out hot flames. death banters before him, two kindred spirits who speaks in hurt yet want, and then they turn their banter towards him and he doesn’t know who to answer first ( where does the lamb begin and the wolf end ? ). sylas feels a shiver run down his spine.
“ the winds have never blown behind me, ” he reaches out a hand to grasp at nothing, clenches his fist, and the shackles and chains around his wrists clink and chime ( remember, remember ), “ for me — for my fellow mages — the winds have always blown against us. ” unjust, unfair.
he dares to step forth, to approach death, and how the defiance, the born rebel, shines through. they are not hunting him ( not yet, his mind supplies ) and thus his shoulders relax ( but his mangy hackles still stand tall, a feral, formerly domesticated dog in the presence of his future hunters ).
“ i seek allies, ” proud and tall, how sylas stands is how he desires for all to see him, full of pride and rage ( and guilt ), “ and help. to topple the demacian swine who governs yet fears what they can’t comprehend. they desire to keep us in the mud, behind walls, away from their precious, perfect society ! ” that is his journey, that is why he journeys, home, then out to brave the wild, wild world, and then home again. hero, the revolution yells at him, liberator, leader; villain, demacia cries, fiend, murderer, and he is everything at once.
“ … is that a hunt you may desire ? ” to the lamb, and then to the wolf.
wolf with questions in his eyes and lamb world-weary listens to the fervor of a man who thought death would care for his hopes, desires, dreams ---- would care for the way the young mage speaks outside of himself, dramatic and foolhardy. ❝ have they? then how do you stand before us, alive? ❞ lamb asks, though with no trace of malice.
does she tell him of the rebellions that came before him? of the short cry of victory, arms outstretched in reverence, before another man stands to take all that they accomplished? a cycle of death: of those in power, those in not. does she tell him that even he succeeded, it wouldn’t be for long? the young mage who clings to his rebellion like a life line, emboldened by the cries of others, how would he fare in knowing the freedom he seeks never lasts?
would those short breaths be enough? would that accomplishment be enough? it was hard to say of the short lived, who could only see so far past the present; of passion, so bright and clear and enveloping, it was all you could see. not unlike wolf and his chase, not unlike wolf’s single-minded, hungry heart. ( lamb doesn’t tell him: not yet, now now, not when the young mage would only grow louder, louder, if only to drown out her words. )
with a growl as sylas stepped forward, wolf said, ❝ so close i can taste him, ❞ and lamb replied, ❝ patience, dear wolf. you see, he wants to invite us to hunt. ❞
❝ what hunt is that? ❞ wolf said with laughter, ❝ not a hunt at all. ❞
behind her mask, lamb’s lips pulled into a smile, her attention drifting from wolf to sylas. ❝ we will be with you, but only to collect. you will create many hunts for us, sylas. ❞
❝ and they will run. ❞ wolf interrupted, excited at the prospect, and lamb agreed, ❝ they will run. ❞ then, lamb paused to think: there was the same answer, ‘ no ’ rounded out already in her mouth, but she, with an old, tired form of sadness finally said, ❝ you are a strange one, calling on us to join you in your human hunt. ❞ she looks up at the young mage, voice clear. ❝ we do not hurt those still living. that is your job. ❞
❝ besides, you have put no thought into what comes after. ❞ all pretty words, like her poetry, scrawled neatly on a page -- a pretty dream. but once he won, would he still step up to lead? would he know how? if he wasn’t strong enough ... another tyrant would rise up and start the cycle all over again. ❝ how sad, ❞ lamb whispered, despite herself.
❝ you could run, but you have done enough running, haven’t you? ❞ lamb, bowed over her quiver, laid the weapon atop the crest of her knees, looking onto the young, revolutionary mage with bold defiance in his eyes. ❝ it is not yet time for your hunt, ❞ she adds, a curiosity in the well of her chest for the man who had so many things carved into the harsh line of his mouth, unspoken, death a whisper but still not loud enough to claim him. ( he should have died, once, but he kept fighting, fighting, fighting! ).
❝ he will be mine, ❞ wolf growled just behind her, a dark mist, hovering impatiently around her shoulders. ❝ he might be yours, dear wolf, ❞ lamb answered, her palm fondly pressed against his nose as she considered, ❝ he has many things he feels unfinished. ❞ many lives passed by, many wasted, many taken, unfair, fair, it did not matter. but this soul was patient: knew patience as intimately as lamb knew it, all for words that spoke of righteousness, of ‘revolution’, of -- ❝ he also hunts, ❞ wolf said, more sensitive than he knew, and lamb nodded. ❝ but not the hunt as we know it, ❞ lamb finished, straightening out to stand.
❝ aren’t you on a journey, sylas? you should move quickly. ❞ she lingered even as wolf paced: advice, for the mage who met them before the chase, before meeting them was less chance, more inevitability. ( the young mage who craved more than his own freedom, the young mage who once had hands much cleaner ). ❝ the winds will not always blow behind you. ❞
