Bran remained still even as Jamie tried to use humor to deflect under the way he was feeling. No laugh. No smile. Not even a smirk. Nothing was given in response until he decided on his words.
"You would do well to heed my warning." It really was in Jamie's best interest that he pay attention to what Bran was saying. He didn't say things like that just to complete his new creepy energy. Warnings were given for good reason. "Soon the safety of all will be called into question, but your safety cannot be secured now."
Years before, he probably would have denied himself the chance to give a warning to someone that had tried to kill him; being too young and too naive often made for poor choices. Now, though, he understood his purpose... and part of that included offering a warning to those that needed it. He couldn't let Jamie go in blind to whatever his reason for being here was.
Not that he could really do much else for him -- he'd have to fight his own battles -- but if he felt like taking Bran along with him, he could at least be some kind of company. (Not necessarily good or bad, but at least he wouldn't be totally alone on his journey.)
"Keep your sword close. You never know when you'll need it."
It was uncanny the way the Stark boy stared at him, not even a glimmer of emotion. Hell, Jamie might have been more comfortable with a spiteful anger than whatever this blank neutrality was meant to be. It was disarming.
There was discomfort in more than just those stares. There was the presence of his wheeled chair as well. Again, Jamie the cause, and perhaps it was Jamie who'd stolen any spirit from his life when he'd made the choice to push Bran out the window of that old tower. He'd said once that death would be preferable to the disability he now bore.
Life was full of little ironies, as Tyrion would say.
Now Jamie was broken as well, and far less useful than Brandon Stark, though he tried to make up for the loss of his hand, he was not the same man he'd been who pushed the child to his near-death.
No, he had far less worth now.
"I suppose that's not bad advice from my perspective," Jamie allowed. "Though I imagine if someone makes an attempt on my life before the dead's arrival, greatest odds are it'd be one of your banner men. Hence, I believe if I'm caught slaughtering any would-be attackers it won't win me any favors from my hosts. I believe most of your family would rather see me dead than them, and the same goes for the Dragon Queen. Quite honestly, I'm surprised you don't feel the same."
who's gonna shoot me if I say Jamie and Cersei are the greatest love story in modern story telling?
@akahanta plotted starter ❤️
The relief of being in Winterfell, not as a bargaining chip or a prisoner, or an ignorant child wishing for handsome princes to whisk her away- was unrivaled. It was a full bodied feeling, like sinking into a comfortable chair adorned with warm furs and pillow, and yet somehow light on her chest, like the cold air that pinched her cheeks and reddened her nose in a familiar way.
The fact that she was not here alone, but with family made her heart clench with a yearning ache. She'd longed for her family all these years, and while many of them remained lost to her forever, at least Jon had returned with her. The comfort his presence provided now made her incredibly sorry for the way she'd treated him when she'd been a stupid, spoiled girl.
Now, she would do anything to make it up to him, even as he said he'd never held any grudges.
Sansa approached the warm room where she knew she'd find him brooding- the sorrowful furrow of his brow only made the fondness in her chest swell.
"Do you mind if I join you?" she asked, approaching the blazing fire with a pair of wine glasses and a flagon. There were no advisors around to stop them, and Sansa yearned for some relaxation in her brother's company.
Going through the trauma of losing Lady again during my GOT re-read. Was gonna write but Now I'm sad.

While she didn't appreciate it, she could understand her sister's tone. She was the one 'in charge' after all. Not that Arya was jealous or anything of that nature. She had her own skills that would keep her from spending time on the throne anyway.
"Awful shadow? Is that what you think of me now?" She could handle being called a shadow, but awful? "Do you think I mean to bring harm to our own people?" That was a little disappointing. She would only harm those that deserved it. Anything more would have been tempting (or even betraying) fate, and that would come back on her tenfold if she did. It wouldn't make sense to attack an innocent.
"I was not speaking of myself, but I do consider myself knowledgeable of those around us. Being a shadow has many perks that come with it, and that is one of the highest." She only wished she'd overheard something that she should have brought to Sansa's attention -- taking care of the problem on her own would have been more rewarding than letting her sister claim the glory for herself.
"Perhaps it's fortunate that I have nothing to report to you, but I wouldn't lower your guard just yet if you know what's good for you."
Sansa's expression maintained stoicism as Arya rehashed her choice words.
Perhaps she'd been too harsh. While their frequent bickering as children had never felt very much like pulling punches, it had fixated on the grievances of less mature minds. The times had changed them both severely, above all else the nature of their priorities- or at least Sansa was confident her own priorities had changed. Truth be told Arya was more a stranger to her than a sister at this point, and they'd never exactly been close.
But it wasn't Arya's fault either.
"I'm sorry," Sansa admitted with a short blink. "I just didn't know what you meant. I didn't mean to attack you."
Circumstances had made Sansa wary and prickly, it was not the most agreeable combination. Though it was clear her own sharp approach had triggered Arya's defenses. A flash of annoyance moved Sansa as she fought the urge to roll her eyes.
"Of course I'm not lowering my guard. It wasn't long ago that all our bannermen had taken up alliances with the Boltons." Her distaste was obvious in her tone.
@kingbearer gets a plotted starter from Geralt for Jaime!
When Geralt heard that a town was having problems with random villagers going missing, he immediately began to travel in that direction. It didn't matter that he heard about it several villages over; he couldn't be picky when he heard about possible work. Not if he wanted to make enough money before winter came, and he couldn't venture out. Thankfully, his journey ended with a decent meal and ale, so he couldn't complain too much.
The village elder was also willing to pay a reasonable price if Geralt could take care of their problem. Everyone he spoke to seemed to think it was just an animal that had become too bold. But after walking around the nearby area, he was confident he was dealing with more than a simple bear.
Only his hunt was put on hold with the arrival of the Kingsguard. He had taken up a spot right outside the village with his gear laid out for him to make sure it was all in good condition for him when he set out to take care of his prey. But Geralt stopped his work to look at the younger man.
"Here for the beast?" Not the best greeting, but then he didn't care all that much. He could work with others, but it was something he would like to know beforehand. And the village elder didn't tell him about calling the Kingsguard. "Wasn't told that the Kingsguard would be coming here. Or did you happen to hear about the rumors too?"
There were as many rumors of monsters in the woods as there were old wives tales. For all his worldly travels Jamie had yet to encounter any actual monsters in the traditional sense.
He'd grown up hearing- and telling -these stories in a playful effort to scare his siblings. It was an endeavor never successful with Cersei as she'd always been sharper and smarter than him, seeing through his fantasies as easily as through a pane of glass - And Tyiron was quick to out smart him as well the older they got. It was all in all, a short-lived victory.
That was to say, that Lannisters were a cynical sort. And as they grew out of ghost stories and tales of treacherous monsters, so the imaginative rumors of towns folk were brushed off as exaggerations. Simple people needed ways to keep themselves entertained, why not exaggerate the creatures in the woods, turn an overzealous bear into a beast of legend. Something to use for winning over the hearts of whores and fellow drunks in taverns.
However, when the King himself caught wind of these recent tales, ever the expeditious hunter (though growing fatter with every passing day), he announced an interest of a personal visit to the woods. It had been Jamie's disbelieving face that had earned him the honor of scout because apparently there was no better use of a sworn king's guard than to trek the gruesomely boring terrain of the country and find the "haunted bear" or whatever they'd concocted in advance of the King.
In the outskirts of town, after nearly four days of travel, Jamie discovered another creature - white haired and bearded, a mountainous height and padded with utilitarian muscle (this much was visible, even with all those layers covering him). Though he imagined, based on the laid out equipment and the cognizant speech, this was not the same creature from the rumors.
With a light dismount from his horse, Jamie approached the other traveler, tugging the reins along with him.
"I suppose I am, in a manner of speaking," he replied with a speculative look. "The people in these parts tell such colorful stories they traveled all the way to the Keep. Were you expecting His Grace to write you personally of his intentions to hunt?"
Pointing at the impressive array of gear, Jamie raised his eyebrows, "Is that all for one measly bear, or don't tell me- There really is a monster out lurking in those wood."
His tone was quite obviously teasing and not entirely in good nature.

Why don't we just pretend? // arya -> gendry
#ELECTRA HEART
He considered her suggestion, admittedly a little confused. In general, whatever Arya dictated is exactly what happened, at least as it went when they had been traveling together, and doubly now that she'd returned to her family home where she was regarded as nobility.
"Alright..." He remained uncertain.
Pretending? Like the kids in Flea Bottom used to pretend they were knights and princesses meant for a greater destiny? That didn't seem quite like Arya. And struck a little close to something sore for Gendry.
"What did you want to pretend?"
As always he looked to her to show him the way.
I'll chew you up and spit you out. // arya -> gendry
#ELECTRA HEART
"Not very lady like, is it?" Gendry sniffed. "That sort of language."
He was doing his best to keep a serious face though his subtly quirking lips were begging for him to break in a laugh.
"I thought proper ladies weren't mean to spit, and all that..."

Jamie cocked his head.
Many assumed there might be some remorse on his part, first for breaking his oath to the king, then, as more of his sins became commonly known, for his general disregard for common decency- or at least as it was known among honorable ladies and lords.
Understanding that shelter and provisions from Winterfell was not a release of all accountability for his past, his fragile truce with the Starks (and Targaryen) had not eliminated old grudges.
"A mistake? That's funny," he asked the young lady that his dear sister had once referred to as a feral animal. In truth, it was the sort of spirit that Jamie had always been partial to, finding it somewhat amusing. Though her obvious disdain for him implied this respect was not mutual.
That too was no novelty.
"A mistake according to who?" he engaged. Then there was nothing to lose playing the Devil's advocate.
