[odysseus] Odysseus ever struggled with his nightmare. The screams of Trojan citizens as the city burned around him always echoed in his ears when he jolted awake in a cold sweat, gasping for breath. Cana was used to it by now, and he was generally calmed somewhat just by her being nearby when he woke, but this time he seemed especially shaken. Finally, after laying back down and trying, but failing to steady his breath and heartbeat, he murmured, “Will you sing something for me?”

The horrid images, the ringing of screams, the trembling hands… She knew the signs all too well. Nightmares were such an ugly little thing.

Cana silently closed the book she had been skimming through, placing it to the side. The chair creaked as she rose and walked towards the man. Concern flooded her eyes. She didn’t speak however, not yet. There was nothing she could say as he tried to calm himself. 

This was painful to watch. She wanted to help. Her mind and heart were screaming at her to do something, anything. Yet her hands stayed by her side. Things could become even worse with just one slight touch. She didn’t want to risk it.

Once he spoke, she knew it was okay to act. “Mm-hm, of course. I’m just sorry that it won’t be the best.” The light laugh meant to follow the sentence never formed. It was her own fault, trying to lighten the heavy atmosphere.

Cana lowered herself and sat at the very edge of the bed. Her right hand hovered in the air, still hesitant to touch him. It eventually moved back to her side. No, now wasn’t the time. He had only asked for a song.

The girl closed her eyes, a light smile curling the corners of her lips. Her voice was gentle as she quietly sang.

A familiar hand reached over her desk and set down a hot, fresh cup of cocoa with some whipped cream. It was late, and most of the facility was still, most of the servants having retired save some of the night owls.

“’Nother late night, Master?” came that oh so familiar drawl of the King of Ithaca. “Thought maybe you could use something warm,” he said, his voice evening out into the tone he so rarely used - it seemed only with her, Gilgamesh, and the other greeks. “It’s pretty chilly tonight.”
