ryan kinkade was named after his great-grandfather whose tales rivaled the excitement of voltronโs. his immediate family (ย father, mother, little sister )ย calls himย โrye,โ and he feels a bit strange if anyone else uses that nickname.
assuming that james and keith are similar in age (ย not accounting for s7โฒs warped time ), and that ryanโs not far off, heโs likely around 19-20 years old. however, considering his height and maturity, people often mistake him for being older.
ryanโs fashion style is largely inspired by his parents, who tend to dress more formally. aside from his garrison uniform, he likes dressy casual. he favors iron-pressed button-up shirts (ย usually in dark blues and simple patterns; e.g., une, deux, trois ), and may add a cardigan on top when itโs a bit chilly out. pajamas usually consist of a t-shirt and a pair of briefs, though it used to beย a matching top and bottom, courtesy of his parents, but he outgrew the sets heโd brought with him to garrison.
family is his top priority - thatโs how heโs been raised. heโs extremely close to his parents and younger sister, oftentimes allowing their words to guide his actions. he also takes after his father and mother (ย a retired garrison intel and an honorably discharged fighter pilot, respectively )ย and regards them as the most influential role models in his life.
ryan is among the cleanest, most organized individuals youโd ever meet. his room is spotless - not a speck of dust, not a thing out of place. he makes his bed every morning and expects guests to remove their shoes at the door. other than that, he likes keeping things simplistic---walls are free from decor. the only aspect that sets it apart from a model room is the short row of books ranging from vegetarian cookbooks to self-help guides on his desk. his actual bedroom back in toronto is similar in design.
in truth, ryan doesnโt want anything enough to sacrifice everything for. he fights for earth because he wants peace, yes, but he doesnโt feel obligated to go out of his way to do so. his primary motivation, if anything, is to live a simple life with his family and friends.
ryan loves more through actions than words. while heโs not opposed to verbally expressing his affection for others, he prefers the more subtle ways: taking care of them, being there for them emotionally and without judgement, etc. his love languagesย (ย receiving )ย is quality time, followed by physical touch; and his love languages (ย giving )ย is quality time, followed by acts of service.ย /ย in relationships, ryan tends to feel emotions very strongly, though his actions may not necessarily reflect this. generally speaking, heโs a good partner; but problems may arise due to his insistence on a certain life style (ย e.g., keeping a squeaky clean room, prioritizing exercising and healthy eating, etc. ). he also doesnโt quite recognize that some partners may need more verbal affection.
Setsuka may have been in charge of the infirmaries, but it wasnโt as if she didnโt have appointments to keep her busy as well, though it wasnโt often. These were times of peace, so not many major incidents happened without her warning. Todayโs last patient of the day was a Kinkade, Ryan and she was informed he has an injury in which he had stated to have a possible infection.ย
Entering the room, she gave the male a smile.ย โGood Afternoon, Iโll need you to stand to do a full body scan.โ Once Kinkade was up and sat back down, Setsuka took a look at what the scan had to offer.ย โLooks like you have a week-old gash โฆ Why didnโt you come see me immediately?โ
ย ย ย ย ย hereโs the thing: ryan doesnโt lie. he doesnโt like lying, doesnโt see a reason toย lie---but skirting AROUND the truth? thatโs something he has grown accustomed to (ย much thanks to his familyโs one and only policy ofย โtell the truth---alwaysโ ). thereโs a place and time for such pseudo-truths, and thisย makes the cut.
ย ย ย ย ย โmost of my wounds heal within a few days. i figured this one wouldnโt be any DIFFERENT.โย the first part holds the whole truth; the latter . . was true up until two days ago when he realized that healing wounds shouldnโt look like this.ย โiโve been cleaning it with water and following with an antibiotic,โ ย he says, raising his eyes from the gash to the young medic. ย โam i dealing with a possible INFECTION?โ
ย ย ย ย ย he hasnโt seen ina bleed since the combat class theyโd taken together. back then, they werenโt friends. hell, they werenโt even ACQUAINTANCES. she was just another cadet:ย quiet, back of the room, nearly invisible if not for her strikingly blonde hair. he doesnโt remember much from that class, but he doesย remember being amazed just once. he had knocked her down during a practice round---albeit a bit too harshly, his mistake---but sheโd gotten back up, wiped the blood from her mouth, and finished the tussle. heโs not one to CURSE - not even in his head - but in that moment, he remembers thinking damn.
ย ย ย ย ย theyโve been through a lot since then, and every so often, he still catches himself thinking damnย on her behalf. (ย SHEโS INCREDIBLE---he canโt say more than that. )
ย ย ย ย ย and for her to . . somehow scrap her knee - thatโs incredible in itself. though he knows her better now, he still has this whimsical idea that sheโs UNTOUCHABLE---unbreakable, even. which is probably why heโs caught off-guard by the sight of her blood. granted, itโs not a lot of blood - but still.

ย ย ย ย ย and respectย is the reason why heโs standing outside shiroโs room in the infirmary, fist POISED to knock. it isย visitation hours, but heโs not all too sure if shiroโs receptive of guests outside of his immediate circle (ย this . . voltronย group of hisย ). after a few more moments of contemplation, he decides to knock.ย ย โitโs kinkade from the mfes. may i come in?โย a pause, then:ย ย โSIR.โ
ย ย ย ย ย DRIFT COMPATIBILITY. for the past several years, ina had been his partner in the cockpit. she would stillย be his partner if not forย โfamily complicationsโ (ย he hasnโt gotten clarification on what thatย meant, but he hasnโt bothered asking either---none of his business, reallyย ).
ย ย ย ย ย itโs a bit strange switching partners now; heโs open to the idea, but heโs not all to sure if heโd like it. he has already shared his memories, his utmostย SECRETSย buried deep, with someone---and to allow another person, a strangerย at that, in? he has some pride.ย
ย ย ย ย ย but they insist. heโs one of their best fighter pilots, and they needย him to be out there. theyโve tried matching him with two others already---didnโt work out. and now theyโve brought in keith kogane. third timeโs the CHARM, they say. he sincerely doubts it but figures it wouldnโt hurt to try.ย ย โ------you were drift compatible with someone else.โย he doesnโt know much about keith, but heโs FAIRLY certain the other had a partner at one time.ย ย โwhat happened to them?โ
ย ย ย ย ย to be perfectly CLEAR---ryan is comfortable with confrontation; he just doesnโt like confronting others, because chances are - itโs not worth it. heโs well aware of the anxiety associated with the words we need to talk, so UNLESS itโs a serious issue, heโd prefer to stay relatively quiet.
ย ย ย ย ย but something has shifted in that regard lately. he had overheard james talking to someone about keith, and while whatever happened between them is NOTย his business - itโs starting to affect the team. and they canโt have that.
ย ย ย ย ย he finds keith by chance; and for the BRIEFEST moment, he reconsiders his stance on the situation. itโs reallyย none of his business. but since keithโs already here ---ย ย โkogane.โย he picks up his pace ever so slightly to catch up.ย ย โdo you have a minute? i would like to talk to you about griffin.โ
ย ย ย James had been a bit upset over their last conversation. He had his own self
doubt of being the leader of this team, and Ryan questioning his actionsย didnโtย
help that feeling. Although he had every right to question, it was fine to do that,
James left the conversation with a huff. It was clear he had been frustrated over
theย matter.
ย ย It had been a few hours after the disagreement. Ryanโs voice reached his
ears. Though he wasnโt in the mood to argue,ย he wasnโt aboutย to ignore his
teammate. His eyes flickered up, meeting the otherโs gaze. Hisย hand reached
up, fingers running through his own hair. He was silent as heย greeted the other,
shifting over so he had room to sit.ย
ย ย Instantly, his apology hit his ears, brining out a surprised sigh. James placed
a hand upon Ryanโs shoulder,ย โ It wasnโt immature,ย โ he paused for a moment,
lifting his hand off his shoulder,ย โ IโฆI suppose that choice wasnโt the best, and
you were just looking out for the team. No need to be sorryโฆI should be sorry.
My head has justโฆjust been all over the place.ย โ in truth Ryan was someoneย
James confided in.
ย ย ย ย ย naturally, he should feel relievedย that his apology was well-received.ย but for some reason unbeknownst to him, the apology feels a bit LACKLUSTER. perhaps itโs because heโs been raised in a household where simply acknowledging oneโs faults doesnโt cut it; he has to make RESTITUTION. it shapes character, his parents would always say. it makes you a better person.
