"Genius Loci" 2023 '5.08 super 16mm digital transfer

The main protagonist of this short film is the author himself, as in his previous films. Disguised as a street repair worker, he hides in a trailer at the construction fleet owned by the city. At the dawn of a new working day, he begins his journey, the end point of which is unknown to him. The search for this place becomes a psychogeographical haiku and a pretext for the journey, the meaning of which is understood by repeating the action from the beginning – coming back to the starting point in the film.

“C-F-K-U-T-X“ , signal flags, hemp rope, flag pole 2022

Permanent installation on the former dredger in Zapyškis, Lithuania. The title of the work of art, “C-F-K-U-T-X”, comes from the letters signifying each flag or combinations of separate words, used for communication between ships and port personnel. “Yes, I am incapacitated, but I want to send a message: you are approaching a dangerous limit, so withdraw and change your intentions.” Through its multifaceted nature, this work reflects a complex apocalyptic situation, when humanity no longer agrees within itself, because the same object or phenomenon tends to be called by different, sometimes radically contradictory, names or truths.

“36 chambers” 2019 installation view, mixed media

Dubauskas’s debut solo show in Kaunas (”POST” gallery) invites on a journey along the water roads by the river Neris. Dubauskas’s contemporary body of work stems from Neris’ rich history. Reflecting upon the very first scientific expedition that Earl Konstanty Tyszkiewicz organised in 1857. In Tyszkiewicz book “Neris and its shores”, the author gives then unprecedented detail of the Neris, but lacks in information concerning the countless islands dotted amongst this waterway. In the spring of 2019, Dubauskas, informed by his research, realised the objective of applying rudimentary rafting technology on a daring 170km expedition from Vilnius to Kaunas. A catalogue of 50 islands was successfully recorded during Dubauskas’s journey, along with other relevant information concerning territorial integration known as as “no-mans land” and its various ways of usage. Fellow artists whose subject matter similarly touched upon the Neris forms an integral element of ‘36 Chambers’. Exhibition visitors are encouraged to soak in additional information in the small library. One such book: ‘36 Chambers - Notebook of the Neris River’ produced in collaboration with Dutch artist Marie Sarrah Simon functions as a source to grant a wider perception of the Neris’s landscape historically and shifting political climate.

“Down to Earth” 2018  12.41′ 16mm transferred to digital, still from the movie

The film’s protagonist – Adrian from Warsaw – sets off for Lithuania. The destination of his trip is the village of Dieveniškės, situated in the country’s “appendix”, where he hopes to find relatives. Adrian is convinced that part of his self-hood has not yet been discovered, and is drawn to this unknown land where the spell that haunts generations of his family will be broken, or his tragic destiny will be fulfilled.His family tree goes back to the 16th century but has one incomplete branch. The newly-found relatives and the undiscovered land should help Adrian relieve himself of the conviction that he is cursed by a black crow, the emblem of which he finds in the heraldry of a distant ancestor, the famous poet Jan Kochanowski. The circumstances around Jan Kochanowski’s remain unclear, his grave was robbed and his scull has since been considered missing. His daughter’s death at just two years of age inspired the poet to write his most well-known collection of laments. The mystery persists to this day and has touched Adrian’s own family: he lost both parents in motor accidents, his mother when he was seven and his father when he was eighteen. Adrian feels he’s not like others, he is heavily burdened. He sees no future, as his life is a heap of strange coincidences and foreboding of a tragic end.

“Trauka”, sculptural object/food kiosk (2016 onwards)

”Trauka” ( eng. “Traction”) is made from secondary materials and it is used in the various artistic gatherings to serve food/drinks. First intentional piece related to food I made was back in 2007. I use various food related elements in my practice as the city gatherer does

“Take as much as you can carry” 2016 ‘7.07

In the 16mm film “Take as much as you can carry”  the spectator follows main characters who are walking in the dark environment made of shabby wooden houses. The dialogues they speak are opposing the scenery seen in the film (i.e. “as a story told by local white cat” – the viewers sees tabby cat and so on). Whole film structure is based of goofs, that oblige the spectator see the film as coded (partly broken) message. The midpart of the movie (animation) shows the travel through imaginary underground river (tunnel) that connects two different cities (in this respect it is Vilnius and Krakow). The last part of the film has some remains of the neglected environment (as seen in the first part), but in general it is already different – made of renovated houses, shops and expensive cars. The protagonists chooses to “take all that they can carry with them” (reference to shoplifting) and go back to their inheritant environment.

"Proposal for a collaborative project"

2012 until present

I will meet unfamiliar person and give him brief introduction to my artistic practice. Later on, I would convince him that one of my artwork is hidden in the city and that he needs to find it. It could be in any shape or material. I would collect the piece next time we meet. After all, I will hide the artwork in different location than it was found.
