Voicebot is an apparatus that powers automated communication with public search engines like Google. You search the internet for keywords and commands, and Voicebot searches the web for you. Once you submit an Opera feature request, it performs its function autonomously.
History
Voicebot was created by Opera Software Corporation, based on a concept created by Joost van Dreunen. The prototype was developed by Robin Paasschen, Dmitry Sereda, and Mariya Frolova.
When Google implemented its knowledge graph function in May of 2008, Voicebot began functioning on many other search engines and websites. The bot took its first steps on 2013-10-30, when it first became capable of following links beyond Wikipedia, which it had previously only followed for Wikipedia entries.
On 2014-03-03 the bot was updated with the ability to search Bing. It was updated again on 2017-04-10 to include Yandex searches. Later in 2017 the new developer team decided to drop Google knowledge graph support in favor of a broader search. On May 2019, the official Opera Blog announced that Voicebot was deprecated. It might return to the public in v2.00 of Opera Sync, which is scheduled for release in July 2019.
Operations
Voicebot is a web bot that searches the web for certain keywords and commands. It searches the web pages for keywords by parsing the HTML source code and looking for certain tags.
The bot can search web pages for specific text using HTML tags. The bot looks for a search tag which looks like <srch> or <srch /> and searches for the text in the search tag. If no text is found in the search tag then the search will be skipped. It may also search for <i> and <a> tags, however this is less frequently used.
Google Knowledge Graph
Most of Voicebot's searching is done on Google, using Google's Knowledge Graph function. The Knowledge Graph function uses the page title, tags, and structured data to find relevant pages, which are then displayed to the user. The bot uses Google's Knowledge Graph function to find information on pages it has searched for, which may allow it to find information more easily than a human can, especially due to its ability to search across pages it will not necessarily visit.
