#vaKATEtion: Thaila-la-land 2017 Part 01
One of my favorite Leonardo DiCaprio movie is The Beach. Some says that the movie has ruined the Lord of the Flies book for the generation X which was written by Alex Garland. Honesty, the beginning of the movie was spectacular but towards the end, it was not adapted very well since the book was freaking auhhhmazing.
Anyway, why am I rambling about The Beach? Because on my bucket list, Thailand is one of the country I look forward to exploring and the setting of the book and the movie is in Thailand ( But they say that Alex Garland inspiration is the Philippines).
Thailand is the most famous gateway to Asia by almost all back packers, tourist and travelers across the globe. I’ve met people here in Dubai and outside of it who always say that Thailand is one of the best place they’ve been to and I get it. People are gravitating towards a place full of culture, amazing food, spectacular beaches, one of a kind parties, and generally locals who are very hospitable and has a great disposition in life.
I, myself, was not immune to it’s charm thus, the reason why my best friend Jay and I planned our first trip outside the Philippines and Dubai to be none other than Thailand.
Ko Wua Talap, Ang Thong National Marine Park
We wanted to experience Thailand on it’s full glory and we went their during the summer of this year visiting 5 of the top places to go when in Thailand.
Bangkok
Koh Samui
Koh Pangan
Phuket
Phi Phi Islands
Since my best friend and I are both in the travel industry, we drafted our own itinerary researching hard on the best routes, transportation, party to go to, accommodations and places we both want to see.
It was a challenge because we have only 7 days to visit 5 different places and try to experience and be a pseudo-backpacker.
From Manila we traveled to Bangkok and only stayed for 10 hours before flying to Koh Samui.
Got a good deal with Thai Airways
Riding the BTS to the city
We wanted to eat authentic Thai food and experience the wild side of Bangkok. An overnight experience was not enough but we did try to make the most out of it.
We went around Sukhumvit Road and bar hopped a little. Drinking local beers and people watch. There are so many expats and tourist around it feels like I’m still in Dubai.
We headed to Bangkok’s red light district in Patpong and I got amazed on how legit pretty are the Lady Boys are. I can say it was an experience.
Going local in Bangkok
The bars are facing each other and tables and chairs scattered the street so you can just sit down, grab your favorite poison and enjoy the show. People may get a little rowdy as the night goes on but it’s already expected.
The mango sticky rice was the champion of my night. All the best food are just food stalls by the side of the road or hole in the wall type of restaurant. Those legit thai taste you are looking for are prepared by the locals effortlessly plus is so cheap you can stuff your face until you cry sriracha sauce.
By two in the morning, we are already rushing to the airport to catch our flight to Koh Samui.
Koh Samui has the best looking airport for me with it’s open style. You’ll get the look and feel of a tropical island once you landed and checked out.
There are so many good places to stay in Koh Samui. If you’re a couple who are in their honeymoon the best place would be Maenam. If you will be going with your families go check out Bhoput and Lamai area. But if you’re like us, wannabe backpackers, party goers and adventure junkies, the best place to stay is in Chaweng beach and the number one hotel in the area is Ark Bar Beach Resort. Just make sure to choose a room far from the beach since it tends to get a little bit noisy when the party starts.
You know which bed is mine :))))))
We checked in, freshen up, put on our swimsuits and had coffee while waiting for our pick up for our full day tour of Ang Thong National Marine Park. It is an archipelago of over forty islands in the central gulf coast of Southern Thailand.
All of the islands are uninhabited and undeveloped except for two. One being Ko Wua Talap where the famous viewpoint and head quarter is located and other, Ko Paluay, which is inhabited by some locals who still earn a living from fishing.
Mind you we did not have any sleep after partying in Bangkok and we are running on low energy but the trip would be so worth it so had to push it.
We got our tour package with 100 Degrees East. We had so many options but this is by far the best tour package since they have their own speedboat and there are so many good reviews about them. They did not disappoint. Their team are fun, very friendly and accommodating.
From the life jacket which is by the way clean unlike most jackets on different tours, their snorkeling gears and diving gears are top notch.
The people who can join the tour is very limited to only 10 people however, it actually is better than joining big groups where in you won’t really be able to bond with all the people on the tour.
The local authorities manning the Marine Park will not allow boats to travel without life jackets even though you know how to swim. Safety first!
On our way to the Marine Park which would take around 30 to 40 minutes.
It was drizzling a bit but a little rain won’t be able to stop us.
The salt in my mouth at this point was overflowing due to over snorkeling. It was awesome though. We saw some sting rays, bazillions of sea urchins if you get tired of swimming you’d probably be dead once you step on them, a tiny barracuda and my heart skipped a bit, transparent fishies ( I don’t know what they are called), millions of dory and many more. I keep following the fishes, our guide was probably pissed off. HAHAHA
Thai feast in this beautiful island
We then kayaked around the other islands for us to explore them.
You can see the Sphinx like island on our back ground
Amazed at how beautiful are the islands
Our crew/bangkero/tour guide/life guard/waiter are the best photographers. They basically know where is the right angle to take good photos of all the islands we can visit and explore. Super props to these guys.
Beshies 2017
Ko Wua Talap, this is the headquarters of the Ang Thong Marine Park. This view is seen in so many postcards of Thailand I just had to take plenty of photos here.
Tanned AF
You had to trek to get to this place so it is advisable to bring rubber shoes/ trekking shoes. But since we were wearing our slippers only we did not trek until the highest view point. Now that I think of it, I’m kind of disappointed but I was very tired so.......Yeah.....Lame excuses.
It was well worth it though and this post was suppose to be for 2017.
Guess what? It’s 2020 and I still want to post it. Fuck it!:)
Up Top: HTGAWM Fixation
I know I was so late to the party but I just want to share my feelings for this mind boggling, heart stopping, hair raising, lip biting series everyone is raving about. How to Get Away With Murder is produced by Shonda Rhimes, the same producer as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.
Somehow, I’m comparing the series to Suits and how it got me so hooked. The only difference is that Suits tackles more on the corporate law while with HTGAWM it is more profound because they are criminal defense lawyers/ students. There are so many things good in the series and here are some of the story line that I so love.
1. Connor Walsh and Oliver Hampton
No better love team than these two.
2. Asher Millstone and his OG way of talking. He may be the least favorite student or the naive rich son of Judge Millstone.
3. Laurel Castillo
Her inner slut but smart demeanor. LOVE her since day one plus her cute outfits.
4. Frank Delfino
Rule Number 3: Bury the evidence is what Frank is all about.
5.. Annalise “Anna Mae” Keating
#vaKATEtion: Sri Lanka 2016
If you think that being a Travel Consultant you get to travel for free all the time then, you got it all freaking wrong.
But once in a while you’ll get a discount that is hard to miss and you’ll even fly for just the weekend just to, you know, experience and take advantage of it.
Thnk you to Sri Lanka Airlines we get to see the underrated beauty of Sri Lanka.
For just 2 days we went to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital and Kandy. According to google, Kandy is the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka.
After working on a Thursday, my friends and I headed to the airport to catch the lst flight to Colombo.
I don’t know why we are wearing these hat actually! HAHAHA.
Madaams 2016!
Beshies forever + kyaaahh LOL
The flight was short and upon arrival early morning in Colombo, we went straight to Kandy since it would take 6 hours of land travel to get there. Yeah, we are crazy like that.
Since we’re jetlagged, chos, tired, we sleep all the way to our first destination and went straight to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Pinnawala has the largest herds of captive elephants in the world which if you think about it is kinda sad.
But actually the orphanage was established to feed, nurse and house young elephants found abandoned by their mothers.
Elephants roaming freely in the river.
YO! Get a room!
Seeing a humping elephant was unsurprisingly disturbing. HAHA! There are plenty of tourist around the time we went and I guess these two lovebirds (love elephant?) wanted to make a scene.
OOTD time with the great Julius Lasangre
We just took some photos of the elephant but we, specially I, did not have the heart to ride them :( These poor babies don’t need that crap.
We headed to Kandy and had an incredible Sri Lanka lunch. After lunch, we headed to the Spice Garden in Mawanella. They introduced us to different spices and shown how some of these spices are grown and processed.
Tiniest pineapple I ever saw. GAAAA! Cutest thing.
The Spice Garden was actually a tourist trap to encourage you to buy organic beauty and health products.......Yeah I bought some. HAHAHA!
After some unnecessary shopping, we went to Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. It is actually renowned for their collection of orchids and they were once reserved exclusively for the Kandyan royals. But today, people get to visit this amazing garden.
Are you nuts?!#@&*?!
The biggest NUTS in the world! Naah I’m not sure but heck they are huge. This tree the same as a coconut but the shape is irregular.
Annjie with the Cannonball fruit tree
Ladies under the Javan Giant Fig Tree
Our day in Kandy was concluded by visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a Buddhist temple and a World Heritage Site which is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy. According to Wikipedia, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country.
The palace courtyard.
Some Buddhist entering to offer their prayers and worship
You can’t actually take a selfie of photos of you in the temple but I’m sneaky and badass like that. He. *smirkface*
Stone walls carving are legit awesome
The temple was full of tourist admiring how beautiful the palace is and the locals who are devoted to come and sing their praises. It was a good kind of chaos altogether. We headed back to Colombo to check in our hotel. The thing about Sri Lanka, all their establishments closest at eight in the evening.
Freaking eight pm and we did not find anywhere to eat since we arrived at around eleven pm.
Even on the hotel that we are staying in which is Ramada Colombo, they do not have any open restaurants which is a little mind boggling. We ask the concierge and they said that there is a “Burger King” which is open until early morning. We all rushed to this so called Burger King place only to find out it’s not the legit one but a “Burger’s King” a halal fast food resto locally in Sri Lanka. It was so disappointing and funny at the same time.
We then headed out to try the party scene Colombo style and let’s just say the experience was meeeeh!
The next day, we did the very quick city tour since we had our flight back to Dubai on the same night as well.
Independence Memorial Hall
The hall is a national monument built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule with the restoration of full governing responsibility.
The visit was so short I was not able to sleep through the weekend but it was well worth it. Definitely gonna comeback in Sri Lanka to visit their underrated beaches. But for now, Ayubowan Sri Lanka!
#vaKATEtion: Baguio City with the Bunny Sam
My first vacation in the Philippines after a year away calls for an out of town trip with the best friend. She’s on the list of my utmost important people to spend time with while I’m on my annual leave from work because she’ll definitely give me a hard time if I didn’t get to see her. Kidding! But honestly, I was so psyched to see my Pachamcham. You see, we have that type of friendship that does not hover. It does not matter how long we did not speak or see each other but once in a while, when opportunity arise, when we talk, it’s like you can tell each other everything without a single judgement on each others eyes. All you see or hear are words of encouragement, frank remarks, unfailing compliments and empathizing on each others situations may it be good or bad.
The kind of friendship you know would be foreves.
Sam and Katie. Summer 2016
And since it was a summer, we went to Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines to chill, drink hot coffee while eating sumptuous cakes , talking while watching the rain and having the best weather in the Philippines.
Good Shepherd Convent Viewing Deck
I’ve booked us an AirBnb which was actually my first time but definitely not my last, rode a bus from Bataan to Baguio for 7 hours ( soul searching feels) while the best friend was already coming from Tarlac to Baguio since she had an event there.
Nice room? Not much but the place is actually big for the price we’ve paid. SCORE!
Plus artsy decor? CHECK CHECK CHECK!
Once we’ve arrived, the first thing in our plan was to eat at Good Taste Cafe & Restaurant because I heard, and Sam confirmed that the food does really taste good and is reasonably priced plus open 24/7! BTW, my best friend lived there for four years since she went to college at St. Louis University.
Did not disappoint me. And look at that serving!?
We then decided it’s time to hit the night market and burn all the fats consumed after eating those yummy goodness.
Ukayle: Ukay sa Kalye: Night Market
After walking until the wee hours of the morning, we headed back at our place to get ready for a full day of Baguio exploring.
First stop was Bencab Museum.
It houses the works of our National Artist Ben Cabrera hence the name, and his art collection which I would proudly say were exceptional.
Time to photo vomit now. I’m so sorry! The place is just so picturesque.
I’ve singled out my favorite painting upon entering.
Bulol and Ifugao by Ben Cab
The museum is open with floor to ceiling windows and glass doors which enhances the vividness of the art work.
Legit katutubo
You’ve been warned
I did not notice the sign when I entered this place and I was like, neenuuuneenuuuneee.
Notice something weird from the sculpture? I called this, Pre-teen.
Dancing Man by Orly Ipon
This painting made me stare for a complete minute. It was so beautiful.
Sina B1.
at B2. Laging magkasama.
“Wag mong damdamin ang mga bagay dahil ang mga bagay ay walang damdamin”. Makes a lot of sense.
The Bencab Museum vicinity is also where Ben Cabrera lives.
There’s a pond in the back of the museum and they also have a cute little cafe.We didn’t eat since we wanted to try another place.
I wanted to post plenty of photos but I don’t want to spoil it for the people who haven’t seen it. The museum is one of the best site to visit in Baguio which is not part of the regular touristy places we know since childhood. ( Hello Burnham Park, Mines View Park lol)
After roaming around, we were hungry so we headed downtown to try this famous place called Cafe By The Ruins.
The cafe is located in Upper Session Road where all the live bands, great local shops and other cafe’s can also be found.
Unfortunately, there was a fire that wiped out the place and I’m not sure if they were able to restore the original restaurant. But the good news is there is another branch which is called Cafe by the Ruins Dua. I haven’t tried it yet but they say that the food is great and some even say that it taste better. Only way to find out is to try it for ourselves.
After eating time to head to Camp John Hay.
Pine trees! Smelled so fresh!
Had hot chocolate while it was drizzling at Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe.
Went back to the city to get a massage and see the quirkiest little bookstore.
There was a small theater inside which shows indie films. Probably the hippest place in Baguio.
Dramatic colors.
They only sell locally published books and I bought 2. #golocal
North Haven Spa was chill AF
Artsy spa. You can never go wrong in Baguio.
We didn’t do anything in Baguio but to relax and eat and my bestie brought me to all the cool places not many people get to see in Baguio like another hipster place called Artists Cafe! The place is an eye candy to hipsters for you.
pretty bebe
Forever!
Baguio at night
After dinner, coffee session at this cafe where live bands play. Unfortunately I forgot the name. :)
It was one of the longest day of my life catching up for a year of not seeing each other. Once of the best and one for the books. Baguio will always be a swell place. For us.

#vaKATEtion: Batangas with FMC
DISCLAIMER: This was again summer of 2016
Camille and I decided that we should meet the rest of our friends right after our trip from Bora but we didn’t want to stay in the city because hello?!? TRAFFIC. We impulsively decided to go to one of the best weekend getaway place from the metro, Batangas and also the place where she lives.
We thought of going to San Juan but the drive would be very far since we had a long and delayed flight from Boracay, we were dead tired. Good thing there are so many inland resort there. And not just any inland resort, but one with a view of none other than the Taal Lake.
We decided to visit this hidden gem in the heart of Batangas. Heart talaga? Chos. We decided to go to Nonis Mountain Resort. I’ve never been to a mountain resort before and I didn’t know what to expect. When we arrived at the resort it seemed deserted since walang tao. Like I only saw crews and the reception people but I think it was part of it’s charm. We explored the place to see where we wanted to checked in since it was individual villa type rooms and there is one with a private pool over looking Taal Lake. And guess what happened in the next 5 minutes after seeing the view.
SOLD!
Our own private infinity pool! LAAAAAAV!
It was actually off the budget to get a private villa but it was worth it. The owners was even staying at this room when we decided we wanted to get it, so they had to vacate. Haha! It was very nice of them.
Nakangtoots!
It was pretty foggy when we arrived that you won’t be able to see the Taal Volcano since it was drizzling but kebs maganda pa ding background right?
Camille, The Donya!
Bebzzz, the Mayordoma
Since our trip was spontaneous, we just bought street foods for dinner and beer enough for 1 baranggay. Best. decision. ever.
I’ve been craving for Andoks and chicharon for a while and eating those yummy goodness was just the start of a night to freaking remember.
We love our bread, we love our butter, but most of all, we love each other. ( insert Jay Atesora)
Of course never mawawala ang videoke in any resort in the Philippines. Unwritten rule yata yun ng mga owners.
Videoke hits. Special participation of Red Horse.
We don’t have too many photos of our swimming/drinking session probably because we were having tons of fun. I just took photos when I was still sober.
Team FMC from L to R: Camille, JN, Bebzzz, Annjie and Malcolm
Since pambaranggay nga yung drinks na binili namin, we were not able to finish it that night so after breakfast the next day, session is back on. We wanted to finish 6 bottles of Red Horse mucho, ( yes 6 muchos) but only JN and I were drinking maybe because weak silang lahat? HAHA! Imagine how drunk I was by 12 noon and JN was looking fresh as if he had 8 hours of sleep. Hay sobrang unfair ng life! I was not even sure how I packed my things and how I was able to get to the car. #deadkid
I freaking missed the feeling of getting drunk in the morning with my friends while doing bat sh*t crazy stuff. So happy I was able to do that again that day.
Drinking buddy through and through kahit gano ka pa kakupal! :D
We had to leave the next day because the mayordoma has responsibilities back in the city. In short, bawal magleave ang lola ko. Too bad because we were planning a road trip to San Juan but then. NAH! There is always a next time! And with this lot, I’m sure there will always be a next time.
How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd;

#vaKATEtion: Boracay!!!
DISCLAIMER: This was my trip last year 2016 and I only had the chance to finish the draft this year. :D
I planned a trip with one of my closest friend, Camille from my old work in the Philippines before I went back home. I told her I want to go somewhere fun and I want to drink until I pass out. And where is the place where you can combine beach party and alcohol at its finest? Of course, Boracay!
Boracay is one of the best vacation destination in Philippines not just because of its fine white sand beaches or its pristine water, it is also emerging as a top destination if you love the nightlife.
Since I was currently residing in Bataan for my vacation, I had to go to Manila the day before our flight to Kalibo because ayokong matraffic sa EDSA the day of my flight. That would be a freaking nightmare. I had the chance to meet with my other colleagues as well since I was able to visit their office. YEEEY! In fairness I missed the vibe of the corporate life back in Makati. It was just so refreshing. Not that I’m complaining about my current job.
Stayed at this hipster hostel in Makati called Z Hostel which really has this great vibe especially for expats/ backpackers who wants to stay in the city for a day or two before heading out to the different islands in the Philippines. Yep they have a bar on their rooftop.
The next day we headed to NAIA Terminal 4 to wait for our flight via Air Asia. The flight was as expectedly delayed for 30 minutes but it was ok since I know it is common in the Philippines because of the weather. But the thing I didn’t expect was when we were about to land in Kalibo, the captain said that there was zero visibility thus, we couldn’t land. We circled the area for another 20 minutes before the captain spoke again and said that our flight will be diverted to Cebu due to bad weather. And there goes our chance to do the Pubcrawl we booked upon arrival which we’ve fully paid na since we bought it online.
While waiting for the announcement to land in Kalibo
Cebu from afar
After 2 hours being stuck inside the aircraft in Cebu ( yep, they didn’t allow us to go out) we flew into Kalibo again when they said the skies were much clearer.
We were still hoping that we’ll make our appointment to the Pubcrawl since it starts at 8:30 PM but since we’ll still be traveling from Kalibo to Caticlan which takes 2 hours drive, we had to reschedule it.
Upon arrival in Caticlan, we’ll still have to take a 15 minutes boat ride to get to the island and guess what our lucky asses got, a freaking monsoon rain. And as you know, monsoon rain in the Philippines are like level 3 storm.
With the stranded tourist at Jetty Port Caticlan
So we had to wait again. Take note I think it was already 10:00 PM when we arrived in Caticlan and the rain was not forgiving so we had to wait and wait because the coast guard are not allowing boats to travel for safety reasons of course.
Around 12:30 AM, the rain was slowly going away and we over heard that Tabon Port was already operational even though we were still stuck at Jetty.
So we braved the storm, took a tricycle to Tabon and prayed that there will be boats available to go to the island. But I guess it’s not just us who heard the news so there were a lot of tourists already buying their tickets when we got there. Tabon Port was not the main port so very few boats were available thus, we have to line and wait for our turn. Mind you, it was still raining and there was no shed to protect us from the rain so technically, naligo kami sa ulan. It was so funny and fucking crazy because we didn’t expect our first day to be such a disaster. We arrived at our hotel at around 3:00 AM.
It took us almost 12 hours to get to Boracay when it should only take us around 3 to 4 hours if we’re coming from Kalibo. Whatta way to start the vacay.
Nevertheless, there’s a rainbow always after the rain lelz! So after a long day waking up to a beautiful island drinking Jonah’s famous fruitshake really makes everything worthwhile.
You’ve never fully enjoyed Boracay without these goodness! Jonah’s for the win!!!
Cherry Poppin. Smart advertising.
This island is home to the most artistic people. May it be locals or foreigners. You’ll see it everywhere. From tatoo artist, artsy shirts, stylish accessories, bamboo sunglasses, paintings. Name it. This islands bound to have it.
This shop is one of my favorites at D’Mall!
Another good thing to do at the beach? Afternoon delights.
Drinking our locally brewed San Miguel Pale Pilsen is one of the things I missed the most because the price of beer in Dubai or any alcoholic drink is waaaaay expensive. This is me taking advantage of happy hour.
Epic!
The party in Boracay starts very early and when you get too drunk by 6 PM, probably you won’t be able to enjoy the rest of the party at night. So people usually head back to their hotel by 6 to freshen up, grab a light dinner ( you don’t want to be too full I swear!) and head out again to station 2 to start of the night of crazy partying. And yes, we did party hard that first night.
The next day, we had our brunch at one of the most famous and probably one of the oldest cafe on the Real Coffee.
That’s Momma Lee wearing green. She’s the owner of this nativexchic cafe.
The famous calamansi muffins are sold here. With a mug of coffee, it is to die for.
We signed up for the Pubcrawl where people turn strangers to friends as their tag line says. And it does! Oh god I don’t know how much fun I had that night making new friends from across the globe whom were backpackers, honeymooners, people on their holiday and even locals. The crawl starts at Boracay Beach Club in station 1 and we ended the night at Club Paraw. We basically were club hopping to 5 different bars and by the third bar, I actually can only remember snippets of what was happening. All I know was I was having a smashing night. Literally and figuratively.
Unfortunately, I lost all the photos from the crawl and their facebook site does not have it as well. Feel so awful for not saving those photos but I guess we just have to go back and do it again. He!
Four days will never be enough to stay in a beautiful island such as Boracay and it will always be a cracking idea to go back.
And that is what I did.
The serious travellers had already moved on to the next island in the chain, the intermediate travellers were wondering where all the life had gone, and the tourist hordes were ready to descend on their freshly beaten track.
