InterVarsity Summer 2013 Global Projects
Joyce, your staff worker here. I want to share with you some summer opportunities to consider. I think these trips are some of the best ways to get out of our comfort zones, and one of most transformative experiences during your college years. I want to see KIV send students every year across the world through the summer Global Projects. I went to Xining a few years ago, and it really re-oriented my faith and the I think about God and the world. I re-entered my life in Cleveland and Case in a totally refreshed way. The main shift for me was "What does it actually mean to live 'all-in' as a follower, a disciple of Jesus, despite living in a culture that is all about comfort and self-gratification?" What does it mean to be part of a fellowship that actively seeks to see God's transformation happen on campus?
We have one KIVer applying for the Xining project and it would be great to have someone join in! Written applications are due march 25 (and I need to write a staff reference).
On March 1, the application fee increased to $100, but in order that the increased fee will not become a barrier we are offering a coupon code: GPHALFFEE to reduce the application fee back it's original $50. The hard application deadline is Monday - March 25th.
Enroll as a student in a Chinese university for the summer and serve alongside other students on the campus. Participate in cross-cultural experiences by starting conversation groups and taking initiative with Chinese students interested in speaking English. The project is all about being relational. Friendships formed during this time might be among the most challenging and blessed relationships you will ever develop. Much of the bonding happens through conversations and shared experiences during field trips and other informal, off-campus settings, and maybe a few impromptu "all-nighters." Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and listen, as well as share. Prepare to be challenged to go deeper in your willingness to relate, adjust, and love in a beautiful culture very different from our own!

Human trafficking, poverty, and racism are part of life for the Ayore people in and around Santa Cruz, Bolivia. This project will partner with South American Mission through community outreach and a Bible-based retreat to reach young girls at risk of entering the prostitution trade . The project will also partner with IFES Bolivia with opportunities for campus ministry and with GATHER Network doing community-based church development work in rural areas. Spanish skills are preferred but not required for all participants.

InterVarsity will send a team of college students this summer to the garbage collector community of Mokattam, in Cairo. The garbage collectors community is a very impoverished area on the outskirts of Cairo near the rugged Mokattam Hills. Residents of this community are predominantly Coptic Christians. They recycle the garbage they collect from greater Cairo into products which are then sold for profits, which provide most of their income. Students will live in the garbage community either with local families or at the St. Simon's Monastery. They will serve at various ministries in the area including St. Simon's Handicapped/Home Visits Ministry, tutoring English at the Boys Recycling Center, and tutoring English at the Association for the Protection of the Environment, among others.
