The KIWA exhibition in Takanabe!

From April 7 to May 6, 2012, the 6th KIWA Exhibition will be held in the Takanabe City Museum, down in Kyushu. While the Kyoto exhibition consisted of 300 works, the tour version will have a little over 150 of the very best. The Takanabe Museum is a beautiful building combining both Western and Japanese architecture. This will be the third time for KIWA to travel to Kyushu, and will be held much longer than in Kyoto. Unfortunately, the woodblock printed kites will not be in the exhibition because they had to be returned quickly to Seattle for an all-kite show there. If you are in the vacanity and have a free afternoon, do stop by the museum and see the KIWA Exhibition and then take a look at the Permanent Collection. Both are well worth the visit.

the 6th KIWA exhibition's ARTIST POPULARITY POLL

In Japan, visitors to exhibitions will often be asked to fill out a simple form, if they want, requesting which work in the show was their favorite, and why. KIWA did this, too. Below are the results of the 6 th KIWA Exhibition held in the Kyoto City Museum March/April, 2011, to which over 1,200 visitors came.

The Popularity Poll is truly where we can learn what the public likes. This is one aspect KIWA has always been interested in showing thru our exhibitions. This time we introduce only the top 17 artists whose works received the most votes; 8 of them had also won prizes. Tastes differ, and our exhibitions convincingly reveal this. The judging results of so many of the other major exhibitions do not clearly reflect society's likes or dislikes, but only, usually, one individual's tastes, an “expert” who alone cannot possibility know everything that the public is currently thinking about with regards to art. How many times have you gone to an exhibition and been disappointed in the judge's choices? They are his/her tastes, not the public's.

Here is the poll. You may disagree with some of the results. I do. But I don't represent the public, only my own, perhaps narrow view of print art.

The gift print

This print took hardly any time at all to draw, carve and proof print. One day was enuf. It is small, so no surprise. It is completely from inspiration; the eyes lead the pencil over the paper, the head did not get in the way. Some of my most interesting works have been done this way.

I like this print because it is a little unusual when compared to the other KIWA gift prints. Abstract, in a way, but not wildly so. More calm and easy than some other pieces. Hope you like it.

Most of the previously offered gift prints are still available. If you join or renew, and want one of the earlier works, just say so on your application and it'll be done.

KIWA PRESIDENT'S EXHIBITION REPORT.

The 6th KIWA Exhibition has finished. It was held in the Kyoto Municipal Museum, Annex, a Meiji Period building on its outside, but a state-of-the-art exhibition hall inside. KIWA has used the same large second floor twice before, in 2003 and 2007. Exhibitions of this sort are usually only six days long. They can be free or tickets are needed. Ours are always entrance with a ticket. The show was installed on a Monday, opened on Tuesday, closed on Sunday and was dismantaled on Monday. In between over twelve hundred visitors came to see a fantastic display of truly wonderful, comtemporary woodblock print art. We received 800 prints by 300 artists from 45 countries, more in each category than ever before. The level of artistic quality and craftsmanship was the highest yet, and the range of subject matter also wider and more interesting than in previous exhibitions. KIWA is drawing the best art from the best artists around the world. Judging Day was held in the middle of September, 2010. It took one whole day. There are only 11 prizes, but more than twice that in supurb artwork had to be judged. The resulting choices can be thought to represent the top level of the most excellent printwork we have received in our 15 years of existence. More prizes are needed, to be fair to the other artists whose prints didn't get awarded. Two and a half weeks before the show opened, Japan experience d a mighty earthquake and a terrible tsunami. We wondered if it would be right to hold an art exhibition in such circumstances. We went ahead and opened the show, and put up a Donation Box, which got filled with money that we gave after the show to the Red Cross. What was most interesting, however, were the comments visitors gave us, about how wonderful it was to see such excellent art, and to have dark and depressing moods lifted and relieved somewhat. KIWA and I personally were thanked daily for offering this exhibition. What greater reward can an artist have than to know that his/her art blesses and comforts viewers? I thank each and every artist who sent in woodblock prints to the 6 th KIWA Exhibition. It was a history making experience, for us and for the visitors.
