New Short Term Graduate Work Visa & Expanded Post Study Work Visa Eligibility in New Zealand (2026)
Auckland, New Zealand – March 2026 – In a major announcement for international students and graduates, Immigration New Zealand has revealed plans to introduce a Short Term Graduate Work Visa and expand eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa. These changes aim to strengthen the link between study and employment, supporting both New Zealand’s workforce needs and the growth of its international education sector.
Short Term Graduate Work Visa: A New Pathway for Graduates
From late 2026, eligible graduates will be able to apply for the Short Term Graduate Work Visa, which provides up to 6 months of open work rights. This allows graduates to:
Seek employment in New Zealand
Transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) if suitable employment is secured
The new visa is designed for graduates whose qualifications do not currently make them eligible for a Post Study Work Visa, offering a valuable bridge into the workforce.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants for the Short Term Graduate Work Visa must:
Hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5–7
Have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks
Not previously hold a Short Term Graduate Work Visa or Post Study Work Visa
Have at least NZD $5,000 to support themselves
Medical checks and a chest X-ray may also be required depending on the applicant’s planned stay.
Work and Family Conditions
Holders of the Short Term Graduate Work Visa:
Must work for an employer under an employment agreement
Cannot own a business
Cannot support partners for work visas or children for Dependent Child Student Visas, though visitor visas may be an option
The visa cannot be extended or renewed, ensuring it serves as a short-term pathway into the New Zealand workforce.
Expanding Post Study Work Visa Eligibility
Alongside the new Short Term Graduate Work Visa, Post Study Work Visa eligibility will be extended to graduates who:
Complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7
Hold a bachelor’s degree, completed in New Zealand or overseas
Study full-time in New Zealand for the duration of the Graduate Diploma
The visa will be granted for the duration of the Graduate Diploma, up to a maximum of 1 year. Unlike the Short Term Graduate Work Visa, Post Study Work Visa holders can support partners and dependent children for work, study, or visitor visas.
Why This Matters for International Graduates
These changes are designed to:
Provide clear pathways from study to work
Attract and retain skilled international graduates
Support New Zealand’s economy and address skills shortages
Maintain New Zealand’s reputation as a top destination for international education

Further Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) – Effective August 2026
On 5 March 2026, Immigration New Zealand announced further updates to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) that will take effect from late August 2026.
These changes are designed to:
Help New Zealand employers retain skilled workers
Strengthen residence pathways
Simplify wage and qualification settings
Manage immigration risk through updated occupation lists
At Kiwiana Immigration, we break down what these changes mean for migrants, employers, and AEWV holders.
What Is the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)?
The SMC remains New Zealand’s main residence pathway for skilled migrants. It allows eligible workers to apply for the:
➡️ Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa
The 2026 updates refine eligibility rules and introduce new compliance mechanisms such as red and amber occupation lists.
1️⃣ Trades and Technician Pathway Confirmed
A key highlight is the confirmation of the Trades and Technician residence pathway.
Who Is Eligible?
Migrants who:
Work in specified ANZSCO Skill Level 1–3 trades or technician occupations
Hold a Level 4 or higher qualification
Have 4 years of relevant experience post-qualification
Have completed at least 1.5 years in New Zealand
Earn at least the SMC median wage
This pathway recognises skilled trade workers who previously had limited realistic residence options.
📌 This is particularly beneficial for construction, engineering, and technical sector workers already contributing to New Zealand’s labour market.
2️⃣ Introduction of Red and Amber Lists
To manage immigration risk and prevent role inflation or fraud, new occupation lists have been introduced.
🔴 Red List Occupations
Workers in red list occupations:
Are NOT eligible for the 2 new residence pathways
Must qualify under the existing SMC pathway with:
6 points
OR 1.5× median wage
OR Bachelor’s degree or higher
OR recognised occupational registration
Examples include:
Retail Manager
Hospitality, Retail & Service Manager NEC
Beauty Therapist
Hairdresser
Massage Therapist
🟠 Amber List Occupations
Workers in amber list occupations:
Can apply under the Skilled Work Experience pathway
Must have:
5 years relevant NZ experience
2 years earning 1.2× median wage
Examples include:
Café/Restaurant Manager
Chef
Baker
Pastrycook
ICT Support Technician
Office Manager
Hotel/Motel Manager
⚠️ These lists will be reviewed regularly and may change.
3️⃣ Skilled Work Experience Requirements
All skilled work experience must:
Be directly relevant to the job or job offer
Be in ANZSCO Skill Level 1–3
Meet required wage thresholds for the specific SMC pathway
This ensures genuine skilled migration alignment with economic needs.
4️⃣ AEWV Extension for Residence Pathway (From 2027)
A major upcoming change:
Migrants who need up to 12 additional months of skilled work experience will be able to extend their:
➡️ Accredited Employer Work Visa
This extension (planned for 2027) will help applicants complete experience requirements for SMC residence.
This is excellent news for AEWV holders currently close to meeting SMC eligibility.
5️⃣ Qualification Points Changes (August 2026)
From August 2026:
NZ qualifications will receive 1 additional point compared to overseas qualifications
Overseas qualifications require an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) unless exempt
Level 8 or 9 qualifications must be supported by a Bachelor’s degree
Master’s degree applicants claiming 6 points must:
Study full-time for at least 30 weeks in NZ
Hold a Bachelor’s degree
This change rewards migrants who complete higher education in New Zealand.
6️⃣ Simplified Wage Assessment Settings
Two important updates:
✔ Wage Lock-In Rule
Migrants must meet the SMC median wage:
When they start gaining skilled work experience
And maintain at least that wage at residence application stage
They no longer need to meet higher wage thresholds later.
✔ 5-Month Grace Period
If median wage increases before starting work:
The wage threshold at visa grant date applies
As long as work starts within 5 months
This protects migrants from sudden wage benchmark increases.
7️⃣ English Language Test Validity Extended
From August 2026:
English test results will be valid for 5 years for applicants who hold recognised occupational registration.
This reduces repeat testing costs for regulated professionals.
8️⃣ New Recognised Registration for Accountants
From late August 2026:
Accountants who:
Can perform work as a Qualified Statutory Accountant in NZ
Hold membership with CPA Australia
Will be eligible under the SMC pathway.
This is a positive move for finance professionals considering New Zealand residence.
What Should You Do Now?
If you are:
On an AEWV
Working in hospitality, retail, ICT, trades, or management
Planning to apply for NZ residence
Studying in New Zealand
An employer retaining skilled migrants
You should review your pathway early before August 2026.
How Kiwiana Immigration Can Help
At Kiwiana Immigration, we:
✔ Assess your eligibility under the updated SMC rules ✔ Review red and amber list implications ✔ Advise on wage compliance strategy ✔ Plan AEWV extension pathway ✔ Assist with IQA and qualification documentation ✔ Prepare and lodge your SMC residence application
The 2026 SMC changes are technical and strategic. Early planning can significantly improve your chances of approval.

47 New Skill Level 1–3 Occupations Added to NOL for AEWV from 9 March 2026
From 9 March 2026, Immigration New Zealand will recognise 47 additional Skill Level 1 to 3 occupations under the National Occupation List (NOL) for Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applications. This update coincides with the annual adjustment to the immigration median wage.
What is the National Occupation List (NOL)?
The National Occupation List (NOL) is New Zealand’s new job classification framework, replacing the Australia New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).
First announced in November 2024, the NOL is designed to:
Better reflect the New Zealand labour market
Provide clearer occupation definitions
Be updated annually to match workforce demands
Currently, most visa assessments still use ANZSCO as the system transitions gradually to the NOL. Immigration New Zealand has confirmed that the full implementation will happen progressively to ensure a smooth transition for employers, migrants, and advisers.
What This Means for Employers
From 9 March 2026, employers can:
Submit a Job Check for any of the 47 newly recognised NOL occupations (Skill Levels 1–3)
Access newly reclassified chef roles, now split into clearer occupations based on skill and seniority
Important AEWV Requirements Still Apply:
Employers must:
Advertise the role for at least 14 days
Make genuine efforts to recruit a suitable New Zealander
Meet all AEWV compliance obligations
This update provides more flexibility, especially in industries facing skill shortages.
Good News for Current AEWV Workers
This change may benefit some current AEWV holders who are:
Working in related Skill Level 4 or 5 roles
Qualified for a newly recognised Skill Level 1–3 NOL occupation
If their employer obtains an approved Job Check under a relevant Skill Level 1–3 role, the worker may:
Apply for a new AEWV
Potentially extend their maximum continuous stay
This is particularly relevant for certain hospitality and chef roles.
Reclassified Occupations: Now Skill Level 4
Three occupations have moved from Skill Level 3 to Skill Level 4:
Pet groomer
Nanny
Kennel hand
What This Means
All new Job Check applications for these roles must now meet Skill Level 4 requirements, including:
Meeting English language requirements
Mandatory engagement with MSD (Ministry of Social Development)
Shorter maximum continuous stay
Potential impact on ability to support partners or dependent children
Who Is Not Affected?
If:
A Job Check was submitted on or before 8 March 2026, and
It was approved at the applicable skill level
Then:
That Job Check remains valid
Associated Job tokens and AEWV applications (including Job Change requests) will not be affected
However, all future Job Checks and AEWV applications for these three roles will be treated as Skill Level 4.
Key Takeaway
The addition of 47 new Skill Level 1–3 occupations under the NOL is a positive development for:
Employers struggling to fill skilled roles
Migrants seeking to extend their stay
Industries such as hospitality and skilled trades
At the same time, reclassification of certain occupations to Skill Level 4 means stricter requirements and shorter stay periods for those roles moving forward.
If you are an employer or AEWV holder and want to understand how these changes affect you, it’s important to review your occupation classification and visa options carefully.
New Zealand Immigration Median Wage Increases to $35.00 from 9 March 2026 – What It Means for AEWV & Family Visas
New Zealand’s immigration landscape is set for another important update. From 9 March 2026, the immigration median wage will increase to NZD $35.00 per hour, based on June 2025 data.
This update directly impacts several visa categories including the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), partner visas, dependent child visas, and skilled residence pathways.
For migrants, employers, and families planning to apply for a New Zealand work visa, residence visa, or family visa, understanding these changes is crucial.
📌 What Is Changing in the Immigration Median Wage?
Although the general median wage requirement for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) was removed in March 2025, several immigration settings remain tied to the median wage.
From 9 March 2026, the following thresholds will automatically update:
1️⃣ Green List Pay Requirements
Roles listed under the Green List will now need to meet the updated wage thresholds based on the new $35.00 median wage.
2️⃣ Exemptions from Advertising & Minimum Skills
Jobs paid at least twice the median wage will continue to qualify for:
Exemption from advertising requirements
Exemption from minimum skill thresholds
With the new rate, twice the median wage equals:
NZD $70.00 per hour
3️⃣ 5-Year Maximum Stay Rules (Lower Skilled Roles)
Some lower-skilled roles allow a maximum 5-year stay if paid at least 1.5 times the median wage.
With the updated wage:
1.5 × $35.00 = NZD $52.50 per hour
4️⃣ Income Thresholds for Supporting Partners & Dependent Children
Income requirements to support family members will also increase — affecting those applying for:
Partner Visa NZ
New Zealand dependent child visa
New Zealand family visa
👨👩👧 Partner & Dependent Visa Income Threshold Increases
Here are the confirmed changes:
CategoryCurrent RateNew Rate (From 9 March 2026)Skill Level 1–3 Partner Support$26.85/hr$28.00/hrSkill Level 4–5 Partner Support$50.34/hr$52.50/hrGreen List Partner Support$33.56/hr$35.00/hr
These changes affect migrants holding or applying under:
Accredited Employer Work Visa
Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa
Green List Straight to Residence Visa
If you are planning to apply for New Zealand PR, apply for permanent residency NZ, or bring your partner to New Zealand, this wage adjustment could impact your eligibility.
🏠 Skilled Residence Pathways Also Affected
Wage thresholds for skilled residence pathways will increase in line with the new median wage. This impacts:
Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa
Green List Work to Residence Visa
Transport Sector Work to Residence Visa
Important Example: Teachers
Some applicants must now move to a higher pay step to remain eligible.
For example:
Teachers must now be on Step 5 of the pay scale
Previously, Step 4 was sufficient
This is a critical update for education sector professionals applying for New Zealand residency.
👵 Parent Category & Parent Boost Visitor Visa
Updates to sponsorship income thresholds for:
Parent Category Resident Visa
Parent Boost Visitor Visa
…will be announced separately and will take effect later in 2026.
If you are planning to sponsor your parents for New Zealand permanent residency or a long-term visitor visa, stay alert for further updates.

Changes to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa in New Zealand
The New Zealand Government has announced important updates to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, with changes designed to help employers retain skilled workers and strengthen long-term economic growth. These new immigration policies introduce two additional residence pathways, updated eligibility requirements, and revised points for qualifications. The changes will officially come into effect in August 2026.
Two New Residence Pathways Under the Skilled Migrant Category
The new SMC Resident Visa pathways aim to make it easier for skilled migrants and tradespeople to gain residence in New Zealand.
1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway
For migrants working in skilled roles (ANZSCO skill level 1–3).
Requires at least five years of directly relevant work experience, including two years in New Zealand.
Applicants must earn at least 1.1 times the New Zealand median wage during their NZ employment.
2. Trades and Technician Pathway
For migrants in specified trades or technician roles.
Must hold a relevant Level 4 or higher qualification.
Require at least four years of post-qualification experience, with a minimum of 18 months in New Zealand paid at or above the median wage.
These pathways recognise the contribution of practical skills and address New Zealand’s workforce demands in both professional and technical fields.
Key Changes to the SMC Resident Visa
Alongside the new pathways, several other changes will impact applicants:
Increased points for New Zealand qualifications: Migrants with NZ university-level qualifications will have a stronger chance of transitioning to residence. This supports the Government’s International Education Growth Plan by encouraging more students to study in New Zealand.
Reduced work experience requirements: The New Zealand work experience requirement has been reduced from a maximum of 3 years to 2 years for most migrants, improving competitiveness compared to other countries.
Updated wage requirements: The previous rule requiring migrants to earn a higher wage rate when applying for residence has been removed. Now, applicants only need to maintain at least the median wage throughout their New Zealand work experience period.
Targeted eligibility for certain roles: Some occupations will have additional criteria to ensure immigration policies remain focused on genuine skill shortages.
Why These Immigration Changes Matter
These updates to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa are part of the Government’s Going for Growth programme, which also focuses on refining the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), strengthening education outcomes, and supporting youth into employment or training.
For employers, the changes provide better opportunities to retain long-term skilled staff. For migrants, it creates clearer and more achievable residence pathways in New Zealand, especially for those with strong work experience or trade qualifications.
When Will the New Rules Take Effect?
The changes to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa will come into effect in August 2026. Immigration New Zealand will release detailed guidance on how to apply closer to the implementation date.
Need Help Understanding Your Options?
If you are a skilled worker, tradesperson, or employer in New Zealand, these changes could directly affect your residence visa eligibility. Preparing early will give you a competitive advantage once the new policies are live.
