The clients wanted to restore this 1917 airplane bungalow, retaining its original style while adding modern conveniences and increasing energy efficiency throughout the house. The renovation included a kitchen, two bathrooms, built-ins, insulation, windows, and restoration of the living room and dining room finishes. Other updates include an on-demand water heater and a solar voltaic system added by the owner.
On the main floor we replaced or repaired the French windows, salvaging the old glass to reglaze custom-built windows to fit in seamlessly with the old. We restored all surfaces, including painting, refinishing woodwork and the hardwood floors.
The protruding kitchen stove and refrigerator disrupted traffic flow so we gave the stove its own work area, and removed a chimney to integrate the refrigerator into a more central location. The cabinet bases were bumped out to accommodate a modern dishwasher and farm sink. We removed a mudroom to bring in more natural light and a view of the backyard. Built-in cabinetry with a column and soffit creates an open yet separate entry.
In the bathroom, we added built-in cabinets, wainscoting, restored the floor tile and original claw foot tub, and installed a new sink and toilet.
On the second floor, we enlarged the powder bath to accommodate a walk-in tiled shower. White tile adds to the perception of space while reflecting light from a solar tube. A full-width medicine cabinet above the toilet and compact sink maximizes storage space.
We created storage in the sewing room with built-in bookcases recessed into the adjacent attic space. The chimney removal allowed space for a built-in armoire and cozy window bench at the top of the stairs. All plaster was removed to install insulation, drywall and energy-efficient casement windows, making the home as warm and cozy feeling as it looks.
