Revisiting the show now, it occurs to me how utterly heartbreaking Rebekah's betrayal is in the 1910s when she summoned Mikael. Knowing how much pain Mikael has brought to Klaus, how much grief and suffering, of course it would feel like a sin unequal to anything else. Klaus has been plenty cruel to Rebekah, but this one probably felt to Klaus like a very specific kind of intentional cruelty, not just intending to harm him but also to break him. Of course it would hurt like nothing else

I love how utterly diabolical Klaus is from the get-go. Like oh yes, my plan is to immediately go after one of Marcel's most trusted men, killing that man's love interest, ensuring that he will be out of the picture by being imprisoned for a 100 years, which will in turn cause a lot of strain on Marcel's internal circle, AND gain Marcel's trust and favor. And this is all by episode 3. My man doesn't fuck around.

the complexity of Klaus and Marcel's relationship in the first season is one of the best things about this show. there is soooooo much baggage on so many levels and undeniable power imbalance. but of course, the complexity is exactly why the show never really rises to this relationship's potential or really explores it. and I'm so mad that it gets pretty sidelined after the first season. my point being, the originals should not have followed the format of villain of the season because its actual potential was always in the heightened drama of its character and their relationships
