Mike only nodded in response to what KARR had told him, before he looked to KITT, who’s lights continued to flicker. “He doesn’t have that virus thing again, does he?”

“No, that’s not possible.” Sarah shook her head, continuing to run over KITT’s diagnostic results, but nothing appeared to be wrong enough to be causing KITT to have so many issues. “I’m not finding anything.”

Then someone else walked in, an older man, who took the tablet from Sarah- his daughter. “I’ll look it over and see if I can find something.” He announced, looking through the results. “His engine may be having some misfiring, and it looks like he’s having a few errors within his chip alone. KITT, reboot.”

“Commencing system reboot..” KITT stated, before he ended up shutting down briefly, then powering back up. “System reboot complete.” 

The flickering of his lights were gone, but his engine was certainly awful to listen to.

Perhaps, maybe, KITT was a little inferior. 

Attention flicking from the people to the car beside him, KARR found himself wondering once again. In his past, did he ever have anything like this? A team of humans to maintain him? Surely, if he was a beloved creation such as KITT, he’d had someone to look over him. 

…Was it Wilton? Was that was his emotions were over?

As per the routine, the Trans Am was dragged from his thoughts when KITT restarted himself. Could a simple reboot repair his malfunctioning software? He was half-tempted to try, although the horrible sound of KITT’s engine distracted him. 

“You are in need of repairs,” came his obvious statement. “Perhaps Lily may assist you. She has proven herself to be a capable mechanic.”

“Lily will not be able to help me for quite some time.” KITT told KARR, “Her injury was quite severe. Humans are quite fragile.”

“She uploaded a new program just before she collapsed, maybe something is wrong with that.” Sarah suggested with a shrug, “No sugar in your tank at all?”

“No, not this time.” KITT simply responded, clearly eluding to the fact that someone had put sugar in his tank at one point. It likely had been Lily, too, for whatever reason. “I am overdue for an oil change.”

“I thought Lily did one just two days ago..” The older man stated, seeming to be confused.

“Lily was never here.”

At the time that Lily had said she had somewhere else to be, it had been when she was supposed to be doing some repairs on KITT- which she never did, and now KITT was paying the price.

“Yes, I am aware.” KITT’s.. overly simple reply was odd, and he didn’t seem too concerned about his own state, which.. really, was quite bad. When he had finally cut his engine, even the lights on his vehicle flickered. 

“He sounds awful, is he sick?” Mike walked in, thinking he was funny, but it really was no laughing matter. Then he noticed KARR. “Who is this? Looks super cool.”

“That’s KARR,” Sarah informed Mike, as she got up from her seat to run some tests on KITT. “He’s the original. Lily repaired him.”

“Make sure KITT’s okay.” Torres simply told Sarah, before he left the room to make some calls. As usual. 

KARR hurriedly scanned the two other humans. If they were in association with the ones he was familiar with, he had no reason to distrust them either. “Computers do not get sick,” he bluntly informed Mike. “He is, however, malfunctioning.”

One word stuck to his processors longer than usual. Original? Original… What? His voice caught a smug tone, as he believed he answered his own question. “I am the prototype of the car of the future.” That felt good to say. Very good.

He watched Torres leave before refocusing on the other people near him. “I am also still in need of repairs. My memory banks and logs are corrupted, and I cannot unscramble them. I require manual assistance, though my situation is low priority.” His scanner paused, the light closest to KITT remaining on for longer than normal before the typical motion returned. Something in his code asked him why he would prioritize the repair of another vehicle to his own. KARR swatted the nagging thought away, unwilling to even humor it.

Torres said nothing else, going back to KITT before getting in the driver’s seat. They soon drove off, as KITT’s engine continued to sound worse and worse the farther he drove.

Not that it mattered, they’d get to the SSC rather soon, someone there would be able to fix it. Once they’d hit the highway and KITT drove on much faster, his engine became very loud.

It wasn’t long until they arrived, and KITT drove through the tunnel first, soon reaching his normal place where he always would park.

Torres then had gotten out, and directed KARR to where he could park inside at, the spot being almost right beside KITT.

Loose pebbles crunched underneath KARR’s tires as he cruised after the duo. As they made their way down the road, he found himself fixating on KITT, primarily the sound that was coming from under his hood. A peculiar thought popped into KARR’s metaphorical head.

It was… Annoying. Annoying and almost painful to listen to.

It only got worse once they began to accelerate. As if to drown out the noise, the whirring sound of the Trans Am’s scanner gradually began to increase in volume. Luckily, he only had to endure it for so long before they reached the SSC. The building was unpresuming, at least to KARR, looking like nothing more than an aircraft hangar. Except for the tunnel.

KARR felt mildly uneasy, but he followed KITT through the narrow passage. Before long, he was situated parallel to the Mustang. As he took in the sights of the SSC, KARR directed his voice to KITT. “Your engine is beginning to malfunction. Efficiency has decreased by 40%.”

Shortly after Lily had been left at the hospital, KITT and Torres returned to her repair shop, a bit surprised that KARR was still there.

Torres exited the vehicle, walking too KARR, although he surprisingly gave him some space. “KARR, it would be appreciated if you followed us to the SSC.”

He seemed to be giving KARR a choice, although he mainly wanted KARR there so that he wasn’t running loose all over the roads. It wasn’t known what he’d do if KARR refused, though. KITT.. oddly, didn’t seem like he’d be able to do much if KARR refused, as his engine had started to sound a bit odd just since they’d gotten back.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Lily was unconscious once again, and the doctor and some nurses were not able to wake her. She was then transferred into another part of that hospital where she would be monitored constantly.

Despite having the peace and quiet to think efficiently, KARR was unable to determine much of anything. He cursed his failing drives, running the same diagnostics over and over, hoping for something– anything. But there was nothing.

The sound of an oncoming vehicle caused KARR to become alert to his surroundings once again. He watched carefully as the human from before appeared. The amber glow danced across the nose of the car, surveying Torres as he approached. He had helped Lily, and Lily had helped KARR. Surely, that meant this man could be trusted.

“Very well,” came the synthetic voice after a moment. His engine cranking back up, he made a single wheel-turn forward, indicating his willingness to follow.

“Cars can talk?” Lily questioned, looking from KARR then to Torres, who helped her get up. “That is so weird-“

The injury was worse than any of them had thought. “I’ll explain to you once we get you to the hospital and checked out.” Torres told her, bringing her over to KITT, although rather slowly.

The ambulance would take awhile to get there, so KITT was the best option at the moment. Since KITT would be leaving, though, KARR would have plenty of room to escape the repair shop and leave to wherever.

Once Lily was in KITT’s passenger seat, Torres got in the driver‘s side, before they headed to the hospital- leaving KARR all alone.

KARR merely watched as KITT quickly left his line of sight, the gentle hum of his scanner now the only sound in the repair shop. It was true, he was given ample opportunity to leave, to go about his merry way, to go on his journey of self rediscovery on his own…

But he didn’t.

Instead, he remained exactly where he was, shifting to park and shutting off his engine. There was still plenty for him to think about here. Like why Wilton was so important to him…

The idea of following KITT and the humans briefly crossed his artificial mind. Perhaps in the morning, he thought. For now, he had a lot to process.

When Lily didn’t wake even minutes later, it was made rather obvious that something was definitely wrong.

”I have alerted local emergency medical services, someone will be here soon to take her to a hospital.” KITT stated, though he was also in contact with Alex Torres at that moment- who arrived after another few minutes since he had already been on his way.

When he arrived, Torres immediately went to Lily’s side, trying to wake her, and when she finally did wake up, she seemed to be extremely confused.

”What happened?” Was the first thing she asked, a hand reaching to feel behind her head. It was sticky. Then she looked at her hand after she had pulled it away. Blood.

”You fell, and hit your head.” Torres explained to Lily, using a towel that was nearby to apply pressure to her injury to her head to stop the bleeding. “We’re going to get you to a hospital.“

Lily, though, still didn’t seem to understand. “Who the hell are you?”

Alerted medical services? He could do that? Wait… Could KARR do that as well? He was the prototype, after all. A brief look through his functions, and he found his answer- quite easily for once. Yes. Yes he could.

So why didn’t he?

It was clear he realized something was amiss, although he failed to voice it in an intelligent manner. His medical scans also told him Lily was unwell, as if the sudden fall and now pooling blood was not obvious enough. Yet he neglected to act.

When she was finally stirred awake, the vehicle rolled closer once again. “Why did you decide to deactivate yourself?” KARR dumbly asked, disregarding the other human. “This is hardly a suitable location to recharge yourself.”

“I am sorry, but Wilton Knight passed quite some time ago.” KITT informed KARR, no longer seeming to be too concerned about him causing harm to Lily. His attention soon switched over to her, however, when his scanner had picked up something odd with her vitals. “Lily, are you feeling alright?”

Lily didn’t bother looking over, too concerned with whatever it was that she was working on. “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.” She didn’t look fine. 

“May I suggest you take a break?” KITT continued, sounding quite concerned. “Your vitals are not looking very good.”

This time, Lily listened, and she closed her computer.. right before she collapsed, her head contacting the ground first with a rather loud ‘thud.’

With that, KARR’s scanner light froze, albeit only momentarily. While KITT addressed Lily, the Trans Am found himself trapped in his own little world. Wilton was dead. He understood that clearly.

So why was he feeling so… Distraught?

As far as his intact logs told him, he had never met that man. He should have no reason to have these emotions swell inside of him. So why was it happening? Despite KITT’s best efforts, it seemed much of KARR’s past was still lost to him.

Thud.

Auditory receptors caught the sound, and it was enough to drag the AI out of his own metaphorical head. He saw Lily on the ground, and he rolled slightly closer to her. “It seems she has deactivated.” What an observation.

KITT began to explain many thing, including the ‘Knight’ in their so called names.. but then he also helped fill in the blanks with KARR’s past. It might not have been the best thing to do, but KARR could potentially learn from it regardless.

Lily was listening to their conversation, but she was also a bit busy with something else. She was trying to make some sort of improvements for KITT, but seemed rather frustrated with whatever it was she was currently doing.

KITT soon had finished informing KARR of what he knew, and was silent for awhile, before he continued. “Is there anything else you’d like to know?”

Wordlessly, KARR processed the information given to him. Indeed, he was able to unscramble certain chunks of his memory, including one very interesting piece.

He was the prototype of the car of the future. Yes, that was what was missing from his introduction. A smug satisfaction briefly blossomed within his processors. He wasn’t just any computer with a car body. He was the superior one.

There was another detail that clung to him, well after KITT has gone quiet. Wilton Knight… KITT had mentioned he was behind Knight Industries, but there was something clawing at KARR. Unaware of the man’s demise years ago, he asked, “Where may I find Wilton Knight?” Surely, the founder would have all of the pieces to the Trans Am’s puzzle.

“I am certain that Lily has already introduced me, but I am the Knight Industries Three Thousand, or KITT.” KITT informed KARR, still keeping his distance, as he was told to by Lily.

”Now both of you, be nice to eachother.” Lily told them both, slightly treating them as if they were children. KITT, in a sense, maybe was, as he was much ‘younger’ than KARR. “Or I’ll put sugar in both of your tanks.”

“Then you would have to fix it.” KITT responded, having a slightly amused tone to his voice. He said nothing more, but he had a point.

Despite already knowing, KARR wordlessly verified the information given to him. His metaphorical gaze swung to Lily as she lightheartedly chided them. Of course he would be nice. He hadn’t been given a reason not to be tolerable.

Following suit with KITT’s reaction, the Trans Am chimed in with similar amusement, “After all the trouble you went through to repair me… I fail to understand why you’d wish to undo it.” 

His attention moved back to the Mustang, and his voice took on a more serious tone. “I will admit, many of my logs and data banks are corrupted.” It was a surprisingly rare showing of vulnerability, especially to an entity similar in power to himself. “But perhaps you may assist in filling in the blanks, so to speak.

Why do we both contain the word ‘Knight’ in our monikers?”

“KARR, it’s okay,” Lily spoke to him when the door came open, and she noticed him move away from KITT. “He’s not going to come near you. Are you, KITT?”

”No, I do not suppose that I was planning on it.” KITT responded to Lily, although he still made no move to get out of the way. “I simply wanted to meet him.”

Lily was unsure, but nodded. “That’s fine, but give him some space, please.”

At that, KITT did back up some, but still not enough for KARR to be able to get out. He himself wasn’t that untrusting of KARR, it was more so he was being told by someone else to not let him get out, and to ensure Lily’s safety.

His engine responded to the much appreciated space by slowly dying down. He still was not completely calm, as his sensors still detected possibly weaponry within KITT. Aside from that, he posed no visible threat.

If KITT ‘simply wanted to meet him,’ then the Trans Am was willing to give him an introduction. “I am the Knight Automated Roving Robot. …KARR, if you prefer.” It sounded as though he had spent years perfecting the greeting. However, there was something else he felt needed to be added. He was the… The… 

KARR silently cursed as his corrupted data. He was something, but he failed to find the words for it.

Lily was quite relieved when KARR let the topic go, and that was rather obvious. She then got up, as she headed off to go do something else. She did have a few other cars in her repair shop to be working on anyways. 

Though, KITT still sat outside, but he soon became bored with waiting for Lily.. so he opened her repair shop’s door on his own. Whether it was to be able to investigate KARR further, or just to annoy Lily was unknown. “Lily, we must get going.”

“Did I not tell you to have Torres just come here? You could have picked him up and brought him here you know.” Lily became annoyed rather quickly again, only to soon realize that KITT was concerned for her safety.

“I am sorry, Lily, but I cannot leave you here alone with KARR.”

KARR’s visual receptors quickly snapped to the opening door. It was then he got his first good look at KITT. Aside from what information he had gathered earlier with the door between them, he noted that he was very unfamiliar with this car. The lingering feeling of déjà vu had vanished. As far as he knew, he had never met a KITT in his life.

Still, the sudden appearance made KARR’s engine roar to life, primarily out of defense. He was in a small space, and his one exit was blocked by the Mustang.

There was a new feeling of familiarity. Yet this one invoked fear. 

That primitive fight or flight instinct was back. Although now, KARR seemed more keen on fleeing, as evident by the small movement away from KITT.

“KARR, it’s okay,” Lily spoke to him when the door came open, and she noticed him move away from KITT. “He’s not going to come near you. Are you, KITT?”

“I think.. maybe, it might be best if we don’t discuss that.” Lily admitted, before she soon continued. “I don’t know everything that you had done, I just know of the major things.”

She knew there was a way to restore KARR’s memory, but yet she hesitated. Now, KARR seemed to be perfectly fine, and she found it hard to believe that the stories of his past were true.. so she thought that it might be best to leave the past as forgotten. 

From the files on KARR that she had read, she was aware that he could be dangerous. She knew she shouldn’t have bothered to repair him, and she knew that because she repaired him, she could have potentially put a lot of people in danger. Still, she had done so, and she herself didn’t even understand why.

Part of KARR was glad to have that as an answer. The other part, the morbidly curious part, not so much… The desire to relearn was overwhelming. But at what cost? What had he done that was so major? That made him so… Deserving of being destroyed– if that even was a fair punishment. How was he supposed to know?

His attention shifted back to the other car- KITT- still waiting outside. What made the newer model so different? They were incredibly similar, after all. Why was this one declared sound while KARR was not? His persistent scans yielded no answer.

Reluctantly, he let the topic slip away… For now. “Very well.”

“Because of your past, KARR.” Lily responded, “But I’ll do my best if they find out, I don’t want anything to happen to you.” She told him, having gone back to her stool. She knew KITT was blocking the only way out for KARR, whether it be intentional or not, so she’d have to get him to move at some point. 

“My name’s Lily.”

She was surprised that he hadn’t asked sooner, but it didn’t bother her all that much. She then got busy with cleaning up all of her supplies and tools that she had used in KARR’s paint job, having to remove all of the taping that she’d done as well. “Hopefully KITT will leave soon, he’s acting like a kicked puppy and it’s very annoying.”

He filed the name away. Lily. It would be a bit more personable to refer to her as her name rather than ‘mechanic’ or ‘human.’

But something uneasy rose within KARR. He tried to put the pieces together. Sometime ago, he was destroyed- or rather, unsuccessfully destroyed. Judging by Lily’s protectiveness of him, he reasonably assumed the opposing party would want to finish the job if given the chance.

There was an opposite side, however. For all intents and purposes, KARR had a fresh start ahead of him with no recollection of his past misdeeds. No previous grudges or grievances to hold him back. No history. No connections as far as he was concerned. Dare he throw that away in favor of returning to what once was? 

What was, according to context clues, not very pretty…

“Lily…” His artificial voice was suddenly low, laced with concern and apprehension. “What… Was my past,,,? What… Did I do…?”

She knew she shouldn’t have bothered to repair him, and she knew that because she repaired him, she could have potentially put a lot of people in danger. Still, she had done so, and she herself didn’t even understand why.

“KITT is the Knight Industries Three Thousand,” Lily responded as she still sat on her stool. “There was a two thousand before him but I’m not sure on that one’s whereabouts. He doesn’t want his circuits fried, I was just threatening him. No, he’s not malfunctioning.”

After she’d gotten back to work, it didn’t take long for her to finish removing the paint that was still on KARR’s exterior. “I’m keeping him outside because I don’t want him here, and I’m afraid that if my boss finds out that I’ve repaired you, that I’ll be in a lot of trouble. Though I’m sure he already knows.” She said the last part rather quietly.

It wasn’t too much longer before she was able to tape off certain parts of the car, then she began applying the new paint. Then after the new paint was on, it simply needed to dry, but it looked rather sleek compared to his paint job earlier.

With each question answered, his temporary data bank expanded with knowledge. Knowledge that, as far as he was aware of for the time being, was new to him. There was an interesting connection between their names, he noted. Both were acronyms, both were four letters long, and both started with Knight. He flagged that word for future investigations. For now, there were other question to ask.

“Why would you be in trouble? You are a mechanic. A mechanic’s job is to repair automobiles. This, I recall clearly.”

Once his new paint job had been completed, KARR was quite pleased. Not that he voiced it, however he did acknowledge a job well done. “This is satisfactory. Thank you…” There was a sudden pause as his scanner slowed. “…Your name has yet to be registered to my data banks. What may I call you?”

“Because of your past, KARR.” Lily responded, “But I’ll do my best if they find out, I don’t want anything to happen to you.” She told him, having gone back to her stool. She knew KITT was blocking the only way out for KARR, whether it be intentional or not, so she’d have to get him to move at some point. 

“My name’s Lily.”

She was surprised that he hadn’t asked sooner, but it didn’t bother her all that much. She then got busy with cleaning up all of her supplies and tools that she had used in KARR’s paint job, having to remove all of the taping that she’d done as well. “Hopefully KITT will leave soon, he’s acting like a kicked puppy and it’s very annoying.”

“That, is KITT.” Lily responded after a moment, after figuring that it didn’t matter if she told KARR. She was sure he’d figure it out on his own eventually anyways. “Who clearly wants his circuits fried.”

She soon had repaired all of the dents that were littered among KARR’s exterior, and by then she was working on removing his old paint, so she could put some new paint on. Removing the old paint was going to take some time, even though some of it was simply flaking right off. 

Lily ended up taking a short break once half of the paint had been removed, and she simply sat on a stool close by.

But still, KITT remained outside, no doubt monitoring KARR at that point. He also had no idea who the other was, but could tell that he was quite alike himself. 

KITT… KITT… Why did that name sound so familiar to him? And why did it bother him so much? Once again, he tried digging through his corrupted logs, desperate for answers. As per usual, he found none. Damn.

While she resumed working on his repairs, he allowed himself to press further. “What is KITT? Why does he want his circuits fried? Is he malfunctioning?” Combined with his light tone, his questions were almost child-like in nature. 

The whole time, his scanners were still primarily focused on car outside. From what he could determine, this was a newer model than himself. While most of his data banks were still inaccessible, he was able to reassemble a sort of mini-catalog of cars during his brief search for the mechanic. Thus, he determined this car was younger than him by a couple of decades or so. Some of the technology was more advanced as well, some even incomprehensible to KARR.

“Why do you wish to keep KITT outside? You appear to be acquainted with him, are you not?”

“Well that is certainly interesting.” Lily responded, although soon she heard a car pull up outside, and she just walked over to peek her head out of the door. “I told you to leave!”

“Your presence has been requested by Mr. Torres.” KITT stated, clearly not planning on listening to his mechanic, who was quite ticked. 

“I don’t care,” Lily closed the door as she stepped outside. “Do you really want your circuitry fried? I’m. Busy.”

There was a silence, for a minute at least, before KITT spoke again, repeating himself. “Your presence has been requested by Mr. Torres.”

“Then he can come here himself if he needs to speak with me, I am busy.” She said once again, “Now leave.” She then went back inside, and begun looking for some of her tools that she needed for the last few dents on KARR’s exterior.

Clearly, KITT did not leave, though.

As the window tint reverted to normal, KARR’s systems continued to monitor the mechanic as she momentarily exited the shop. He noticed the car, the same car from earlier. His scanner swarmed around the two, primarily the other vehicle. It was, in many respects, just like him. A computer in a car, with extra features akin to his own. He absorbed this new information, hungrily picking apart each detail. A voice synthesizer similar to his. A glowing scanner on the front of the vehicle. A sophisticated protection system for its exterior, far exceeding KARR’s molecular bonded shell.

Before he could dig deeper, the mechanic returned. This time, the AI had to know.

“What is that?”

Of course, he was referring to the other car, but he intentionally left his question vague. His tone did not indicate any hostility, thankfully, though he kept a careful eye on the intruding vehicle.

“Yeah, I’m tired of walking.” Lily gave a tired laugh, soon hopping into his cabin, and closing the door gently by herself. “Mind if I drive? I’d rather us not attract any more attention than we need to.”

She could just barely see KITT’s tail lights down the street, and knew they’d most likely be followed if she wasn’t careful. She had messaged one of her friends to call KITT off, but received no response.

After they had reached her repair shop, and Lily had put KARR inside, she closed the doors. Still, she seemed rather on edge, but that quickly faded away once she got to work, having to completely wash KARR’s exterior first, since it was covered in dust and other grime. 

“I think we should tint your windows,” Lily told him after awhile, when she had begun fixing the worst dents on the car. “That way you could drive around without people getting suspicious of a car driving itself.”

KARR briefly wondered why driving himself would draw attention. His first answer was his aggressive manners while locating the mechanic, and his second answer related back to his questions earlier. Were there other cars like him? The ones in the junkyard possessed no computer like himself, so it felt safe to assume his kind were few and far between, if that. 

Perhaps he was even one of a kind. He certainly wished his data banks and history had been unscrambled during his repairs. He knew he’d find answers there.

Regardless, he switched off of Auto Cruise, allowing the girl to take control. After all, she knew where to go. He didn’t.

Once safely settled inside the shop, KARR watched her resume her work. As she brought up his windows, he hurriedly skimmed through his systems. Something about that seemed familiar… “Worry not. I have a solution. Initiating.” With a hum, the opacity of all of his windows suddenly increased until his interior was completely hidden. “As I suspected. I am fitted with self-tinting windows.”
