The Staten Island Bluebelt: Innovative Water Management for the Common Good

The Staten Island Bluebelt is a water management project run and managed by the Department of Environmental Protection. The project began around the beginning of the 1990’s in response to increased flooding and pollution in developed areas. The region is home to many valuable wetlands that are being turned into BMPs (Best Management Practices) that both absorb and filter storm water run-off.

Management from the DEP has been instrumental in land acquisition and management of the project. However, community education and involvement is also a necessary component to its success that could be emphasized more.

In relation to the Staten Island Bluebelt (Absorption Cluster), I am focusing on the common value of water filtration in relation to 

- Habitat and ecological preservation and

- Public Recreation

The data sets I chose are as follows:

Elevation: to understand where the water naturally flows 

Historic Wetlands: to understand the historic water systems in relation to how they exist today (purple regions)

Watersheds: to look at the water systems as they exist today and what their drainage patterns are (blue linework)

Local Buildings within a 2000 foot radius of the primary watershed in my region: to understand how many people are close enough that their waste water will drain into this watershed (white)

Park Space: What other public spaces are integrated with this watershed? How is the watershed also associated with public recreation? Many of these parks are specifically designated waterfront parks (green)
