good morning friends, this list has been updated with asks from the past seven monthsโthis is likely the last update that iโll make to this list.
look at how pretty this book print is ๐๐๐ค
Someday i'll be a wealthy, self possessed cool aunt for now i'm a teenager girl (nearing my 30s)
Im not one to do a lot of book recs, but seriously, if you guys havenโt read the Dave Brandstetter series by Joseph Hansen, I canโt recommend them enough.ย
The basic pitch is a neo-noir mystery series written from the early 1970โฒs to the early 1990โฒs following an openly gay life insurance investigator, David Brandstetter. Heโs a sarcastic, middle-aged WWII vet mourning the death of his lover of twenty years and learning to gradually, somewhat messily, heal. Heโs smart as a whip, like 12% catty but mostly at family gatherings, and he has horrifically bad music taste. Man leaps straight off the page.
The books are fascinating both as a snapshot into post-Stonewall southern California and as political pieces responding to their own varying circumstances between 1971-1991. Thereโs a lot of value just in the window they give us into queer history.
Besides that, theyโre genuinely really good mysteries. Theyโre about ~150 pages, with interesting side characters and tight, well-written plots. The main character and recurring cast really just jump off the page as well, so the b plot of whateverโs going on in Daveโs personal life is usually as engaging (if not more) than the rest of the story.ย
Thereโs also a lot more thematic density than I usually expect from paperback mystery novels. Thereโs a lot of conversation around gender presentation and straight-passing, menโs mental health and socially normalized unhealthy coping mechanisms, age/physical ability, etc.
Long story short, Iโd highly recommend these to any fans of either the noir genre or the many, many works responding to it, as well as anybody who wants a good firsthand look into queer history. Theyโre criminally under-read, largely because the author marketed them to a straight audience, potentially a few decades too early to make them take off very far. Regardless, I hope this rant strikes a chord with somebody!

a small guide on how i battle my essays! (click on an image to view it clearer)ย
(keep in mind: iโm an english major so a majority of my essays are literature-focused!)
these are just some of the methods i want to share that work for me when i write my innumerable amount of essays! iโm definitely a huge planner so itโs no secret that i spend a lot of time on an essay. if youโre a deadline fighter, these tips might not necessarily be helpful (especially the handwriting one). but i hope this gives you an insight on how i write my essays! ๐

whatโs the mood for february?
no mood weโre taking a break from feeling anything
recover from โburnoutโ in five steps
1. reward yourself for working so hard. take a long bath with your favourite bath bomb, take time to cook your favourite meal, paint your nails. recognise that you worked hard and it was tough and that you deserve time for yourself
2. catch up on sleep. nothing makes studying harder than being exhausted. clear your schedule and have a lie in. even if you donโt sleep late, stay in bed and enjoy a guilt-free lazy morning
3. do something fun. invite your friends over for a movie night, take your dog for a walk. remind yourself that there is more to life than textbooks and notes
4. make a plan. start getting ready to get back into study mode. make a todo list, a study schedule, and a list of your deadlines
5. organise your space. declutter your desk so you have a clean space to be productive in. tidy desk, tidy mind
start again.
My single season is a time for all-consuming self-love and care and learning how to set boundaries so I can continue to have the space and time to look after myself. What is yours about?
