"That's a stupid question and you know it."
The boy cocked his head. "Is it? I think it's a pretty interesting one."
"Its a question without an answer, what's the point of that?" He hummed.
"Well...everyone has a different answer, like for example, I think we live to suffer. That sounds bad haha, I mean we all make mistakes, some that end lives, but its the only reason we know what to do and what not to do."
The man froze. What the boy said...wasn't exactly wrong.
"Its a shame we never seem to learn." The boy chuckled, nodding in agreement.
"Why...do you think im alive?"
"I do not know. To keep me company?" The boy stared at him for a moment before sighing.
"How selfish...although I don't mind."
"Mmm apologies, but I really can't answer that for you." The man looked down at his and the the boys hand. He hadn't realized how tightly he was holding it.
"I know, I know, it doesn't hurt to ask though."
"Do I deserve to be alive?"
"You heard me." There was a hint of amusement in the boys voice, albeit the serious question.
"Of course you do, why wouldn't you?"
"Just curious is all, sometimes I feel like none of us deserve it."
"Some people don't, but while that may be true, there's no one that deserves it more than you." He stared at the boy, he wasn't the type to worry, but it was evident in the way he spoke.
"I love you." The boy smiled.
"He tried his hardest, we tried our hardest, but in the end there was nothing we could do."
"Again I apologize, is there anything I could do to help you?"
The man slumped. He felt cold, empty, like the air had been snuffed out from under him.
"Why..do you think we're alive?"
"...I think we're alive to learn and grow, to prosper in even the hardest times." The woman mused.
"To grow, and learn. I'm truely sorry for your loss, but I'm afraid I have work to attend too." The woman laid a hand on the man's shoulder and smiled.
Once she'd left he stared at the tiles, lost.
The man flinched back in surprise. "What kind of question is that? You know I do."
"Even after the earth itself dies out, even after I'm a rotting corpse in the ground."
The boy smiled before responding.
"Do I deserve to be alive?"
Birds chirped in distant trees.
