Informed Consent & Code of Ethics
As a researcher in English class for Texas A&M-Commerce, this research will be a great foothold for me to improve both in research skill and education. To get success in embracing it, freedom of inquiry is necessary for me. This freedom will be based on ethical research which needs responsibility to conduct all of parts included from the authenticity of data to references well. I intend this statement to embody reasonable norms for ethical conduct in teaching and learning as well as in scholarship. The statement's governing premises are as follows:
1. The responsibility for protecting free inquiry lies first with my work. Furthermore, I have ethical obligations to all of whom I research, interview, and quote with diverse fields; students, colleagues, professors, and etc.
2. As a researcher, my integrity requires the responsible use of evidence in developing arguments and fairness in hearing and reading the arguments of both colleagues and students. Even though the evidence found while research against my thought and conduct, I will keep going on reporting all of them.
3. As a community valuing free inquiry, I must be able to rely on integrity and the good judgment of our members. At the same time, I should be considerate with free inquiry. For this reason, I should not
exploit or discriminate against others on grounds such as race, ethnicity, national origin, religious creed, age, gender, sexual preference, or disability
sexually harass students, colleagues, or staff members
use language that is prejudicial or gratuitously derogatory
make capricious or arbitrary decisions affecting working conditions, professional status, or academic freedom
misuse confidential information
plagiarize the work of others.
practice deceit or fraud on the academic community or the public
4. Free inquiry respects variety in the modes and objects of investigation, whether traditional or innovative. I will defend scholarly practices against unfounded attacks from within or outside my investigation and survey. Sometimes, suggested correction with valid basis would be given on my work, which makes me to defend rationally. Otherwise, I will be sturdy for my research from disturbs.
5. My research will be basis on our culture we live in, will not be biased by specific part of the culture.
6. Judgments of whether a line of inquiry is ultimately useful to students, colleagues, or society should not be used to limit the freedom of scholars to pursue their research. For the purpose of achieving its value, I need to concentrate to deliver appropriate inquiry.
Ethical Conduct in Teaching and Learning
1. Researchers should represent to their participants the values of free inquiry
2. At the outset of each course, researchers should provide students with a statement on approaches to the course materials, on the goals of the course, and on the standards by which students will be evaluated.
3. Researchers should check their works at regular intervals so that their research is going right way.
4. Researcher-student collaboration entails the same obligation as other kinds of research. Researchers and students should acknowledge appropriately any intellectual indebtedness. Since they are not professional at the research, they need to be helped during the process.
5. Researchers, in devising requirements for research studies and questionnaires, have an ethical responsibility to respect both privacy, emotional, and intellectual dignity.
6. Researchers should keep confidential what they know about research subjects personal lives, and political or religious views with objective view, and should not exploit such personal knowledge and opinion.
7. My research must provide unbiased, professional evaluation of the subject matter at hand as well as interpreting and field notes in such a way.
8. Researchers should not exploit participants for personal or professional ends. It means I will not expect people who would participate in my research to respond to the way I want.
9. Researchers have special responsibility to provide them with adequate preparation, continuing guidance, and informed evaluation. Researchers should not push participants to survey as quick, and should be ready to give guidance anytime.
10. Researchers must weigh the value of each piece of research data on its merits.
This documents focuses on the ethical obligation of members of Texas A&M – Commerce that conduct research. A common understanding of such obligations will enable me to exert appropriate restraints in exercising responsibilities and to promote ethical behavior.
The reason I selected this form is that I thought the Statement of Professional ethics format used by Modern Language Associations was proper for my research. It gave me a great direction to drawing outline. The most components of which format were easy to follow. By the way, I needed to change some words and framework as I am a researcher, not a teacher or not a specialist. I would like to distinguish the process of context by three-parts to explain easily. First of all, I am going to concentrate on information which will be the most part of research so that needed to be concerned. The information should be neutral that does not tend to any biased opinion. It will be based on correct and objective evidences. Secondly, since the participants of research are many and unspecified, the information will include various fields so that are valuable. While researcher has to be considerate on delivering the contents, participants are also of great importance. Since they participate in research, they are given chance to experience learning new information, which eventually will be the outcome of interacting with researcher. The results of research enacted by participants will play a critical role in developing arguments in research, because they are showing the statistics that of public opinion. Finally, during the progress, researchers should keep in mind the purpose of research. It is sort of prevention not to be in losing sense of direction. They need to keep interim check. I hope this all process and results of research would not be done only with preparation and participation but also be lingered as productive and useful outcomes.
