Congrats to Maia and Alex for winning bronze in the individual event and for being the first ice dance team of Asian descent to win an individual medal at the Olympics 💕
when everyone and their mother had something to say about you in their drama narrative this season and you have no choice but to prove them all wrong and rewrite the damn story yourself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
maiashibutani: Mirai and I first met over 10 years ago and we became friends right away. We’ve grown up traveling, competing, and touring together. We’ve been there for each other through the good AND the tough times. It meant so much that we could be there for each other on Day 3 of the Team Event. Alex and I were preparing for our Free Dance and going absolutely bonkers in the backstage warm up area when she nailed her program. Skating for her and our other teammates and sharing this medal and moment is something I will always treasure and be grateful for! ❤
mirainagasu: I met Maia at mini Nationals over ten years ago and we bonded because we are both of Japanese descent. Fast forward to the @pyeongchang2018 Olympics: I gave Maia a huge hug before she skated and told her that the team would be skating with her for every step of her program. Tears were streaming down my face by the time she finished because I never thought that the little girls who were excited about taking photo booth pictures together would one day take a photo with their Olympic medals. Similar to gymnastics, figure skating is a sport that we commit ourselves to at a young age and to watch each other grow up and become a part of each other’s skating family has been truly magical. The theme for @usfigureskating heading into the @olympics has been “Together” and I will forever remember the moment that we earned this medal together. 📸 @alexshibutani

mirai nagasu: national silver medalist, 2010 → 2018
#8 years #8 YEARS between olympics #do you realize what an impossibly long time that is for a skater at this level #for mirai to win nationals at 14 and go to the olympics at 16 and still be here at the top today #watching her in 2010 again it just hits me how very young she was #this was the mirai that charmed the world with so much ease #the mirai that brought the SAP center to its feet today carries the weight of so many years of disappointment and lost dreams #but what she found through the flames is the heart of her youth and the armor of her experience #i’m so glad i was able to watch her grow into this incredible young woman (x)
