im the complex video game nerd and my feelings towards this video game are rather nuanced
of course Garcia knows about Santos' scars, she just does not gaf
the earth didn’t have to give us meadows of poppies, but she did!!
ooh mel having to come to terms with the fact that, well-intentioned or not, she's infantilising becca is actually such an interesting and necessary plot point to go with given how we've seen mel tie her identity so much into being a sister/caretaker. we saw becca assert her independence in some smaller ways during the last episode, but this was excellent.
ooooh i'm on my becca king soapbox again okay so i think something a lot of neurotypical or even just non-autistic fans are missing in characterizing mel is that she identifies with her sister. when she talks about becca it's never "oh well becca does this" it's "WE do this," she and becca are a unit. even when talking about her food issues she talks about it as "my sister and i" and not just her, not even considering this is a notably autistic trait because it's just a her and becca thing. it's not a stretch to say she finds becca - who yes, does have higher support needs - more relatable than her neurotypical coworkers. and mel saying becca is her best friend isn't just her being nice, it's true. becca understands her and she understands becca more than anybody else. becca is not and never will be some "thing" mel feels a responsibility to take care of because becca is the most important relationship in her life, hands down.
sometimes i do wonder if mel will be forced into independence because becca wants more of her own, not the other way around. becca who enjoys her time at the facility and the independence it gives her, who wants to break away and make her own friends, and mel who fully rejects this, because they’ve always been the king sisters, becca can’t function without her because she can’t function without becca. mel who might actually need becca more than becca needs her. mel who is terrified of this fact because who is she if she’s not caring for someone else? what worth does she have if she’s not needed?
Little detail from tonight’s episode that got my brain spinning:
Becca objecting to just being referred to as “Mel’s sister” as opposed to just “Becca”.
It shows a fundamental difference between the two sisters and how they view themselves and each other:
Mel sees them as a unit. Becca is her twin, always will be, but Mel’s use of “sister” links them together as a duo first.
Whereas Becca wants Mel to refer to her by her name. I took it as a sign that Becca is seeking more independence and an individual identity separate from Mel.
Becca has a life outside of Mel. She most likely has friends at the center. She can explore interests, participate in activities, and have a lot of enrichment in her life.
But Mel’s life is her work and Becca. She’s made no close friends in her 10 months at the Pitt. When asked about herself and what she likes, she talks about Becca first.
Mel clearly has some work to do to develop a life for herself outside of Becca. As much as Mel wants Becca to be happy, Becca wants it for Mel just as much. I’d love to see a conversation between the sisters where Becca gently encourages Mel that she needs to live for herself more. We probably won’t, but I really think that kind of permission and encouragement from Becca would be so impactful for Mel. Them needing their own things wouldn’t detract from their relationship or love for each other, rather, it would expand their worlds and make room for so much more.
This show is so intentional with its dialogue and so tightly written that tiny moments like this can tell us so much about the characters in the quickest flashes. The show is a goddamn masterpiece.
becca has her own life and a community and love and sex and a diagnosis and has always always had someone in her corner to take care of her, and mel has put her own life on hold for 10+ years to make that happen, has made her life smaller, more manageable, neglected her own needs and desires, has lost out on so much of what it means to be a sister and a friend because she’s had to be a caretaker first, and she feels like it’s all gonna come crashing down after her deposition anyway and now she’s really feeling for maybe the first time the full weight of… jealousy? resentment? towards her sister. coupled with the immense guilt and self-recrimination that has to immediately follow, because she obviously loves her sister and wants her to have all those things and more. but when is it gonna be mel’s turn? oh yeah king sisters angst i couldn’t love you more
