How i feel when people tell me to stop being depressed or anxious.
I amĀ
āŖStraightĀ
Ā āŖGayĀ
Ā šon the edge of greatness, turning darkness to light
For everyoneās information:
The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.
To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.
On the 17th, dead silence.
People are saying log off but what they really mean is donāt open the site or the app.
But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.
What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think āoh everyoneās gone letās shut down.ā What it actually makes them think is āoh shit people arenāt happy and if people donāt keep using our site weāre out of money and out of jobs.ā
A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.
If you want to join in, hereās what to do:
Do:
Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th
Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad
Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion
Come back on the 18th and check in
Donāt:
Delete the app from your phone (this doesnāt affect their revenue and since itās off the store at the moment itāll be hard to get back)
Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and donāt use it youāre saying to staff that thereās still time to save it. If you delete itās hard work to come back.
Open the app or website (including specific blogs)
Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)
Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.
Remember: the execs donāt care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means thereās $0 further income from it. Thatās their last possible course of action. If we make it clear weāre not happy, theyāll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.
Protests take commitment. Theyāre a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because theyāre scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.
PLEASE PARTICIPATE THIS NEEDS TO BE BIG SO WE NEED TO FOLLOW THROUGH!
Doing this. Who else is in?
i meanā¦surely the best way to counter protest this would be to flood tumblr with porn that canāt be picked up by its shitty one layer algorithm.
Literally being a girl feels like nonconsensual performance art

I have talked to four journalists today and have agreed to write a press piece that I need to start on, but obviously itās important that I finally sit down and post on Tumblr, too.
This is a weird feeling: I literally think that I am the worldās foremost effort on the potential impact of Tumblr banning adult content.
Hereās why: Iāve done a bunch of research about the genesis of AO3/OTW, and most recently, a large-scale study of fandomās migration across platforms over time. I can tell you for a fact that both fanfiction.netās and LiveJournalās bans on adult content resulted in fans leaving those sitesāand in LiveJournalās case, essentially the death of that platform for fandom.Ā
The image above, if you havenāt seen it before, shows fandom platform use over time, and the red line that dips drastically is LiveJournal, after āStrikethrough 2007.ā
Hereās another finding from that study: That policy was the #1 reason that fans left LiveJournal. For every other platform, fans mostly left because something better came along, but nope, for LiveJournal, it was specifically because of their crackdown onĀ āobsceneā content, and what that signaled to fandom about how they were unwelcome there.
Iām going to be posting more about this in the coming days, so watch this space, but hereās my tweetstorm from today, hereās a CNN article Iām quoted in, and hereās another Tumblr post with an optimistic view. As I wrote recently in a TWC piece about how I see the future of fandom,Ā āfandom is not helpless to external forcesāto platforms, industries, or even policies.ā I believe that.
If history repeats itself, then Tumblr might fall as LiveJournal did - but something better might come to take its place.Ā
Iām just gonna come out and say that as an ace adult with a couple basic tags blocked, the number of times I accidentally saw untagged inappropriate content from real humans on this site was virtually zero. I consented to all the inappropriate content I was consuming on this site - usually artist renditions of characters.
The number of times I saw inappropriate content from bots? Enormous - on my posts, on my mutuals posts, on virtually any post that was popular, and almost all of it was via text links with excessive misspellings - not photos and tags that a handy automated system can snap up.
Donāt even get me started on the number of times I saw racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and anti-Semitic content on this site - many of them violence-inciting.
So yeah tumblr real humans who post titties arenāt your problem.
