Song of the Day - 'London Calling' The Clash
This song will forever go down in the history of Punk music as it contains everything a Punk song should have. Raw energy, crackling vocals,a message of certain doom and the dismissal of society as 'phoney'.
The beat of the drums in the intro tells you that this song is a warning; a prophecy of nuclear disaster with the wailing sirens. Joe Strummer's husky, masculine vocals almost explodes into his warning of impending doom as he tells us that the Utopian ideals of the 1960's is gone forever with his declaration that 'phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust.' London Calling is THE anthem of the 1970s, summing up the fear of nuclear technology and the decay of society. It could almost be the accompanying soundtrack to the bleak 'protect and survive' instructional videos issued by the government. Strummer is preparing us for the battle, telling us that the dream is over and we have to 'come out of the cupboard' to face the apocalypse, he isn't scared of London drowning and he 'lives by the river'
The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in. Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin. A nuclear error, but I have no fear.London is drowning-and I live by the river
Following the second chorus, Strummer caws like a bird of prey circling the city. Such a raw sound of anger and expression before assuring us that we can't tell him anything he doesn't already know as he was there too.
London Calling is still cited today as a Punk classic (often being misinterpreted by many advertising agencies to encourage consumers to go to London) . The song gets pulses racing and as prophecies of doom go, this my favourite.
Daydreams for Ginsberg
I lie on my back at midnight
hearing the marvelous strange chime
of the clocks, and know it's mid-
night and in that instant the whole
world swims into sight for me
in the form of beautiful swarm-
ing m u t t a worlds-
everything is happening, shining
Buhudda-lands,
bhuti
blazing in faith, I know I'm
forever right & all's I got to
do (as I hear the ordinary
extant voices of ladies talking
in some kitchen at midnight
oilcloth cups of cocoa
cardore to mump the
rinnegain in his
darlin drain-) i will write
it, all the talk of the world
everywhere in this morning, leav-
ing open parentheses sections
for my own accompanying inner
thoughts-with roars of me
all brain-all world
roaring-vibrating-I put
it down, swiftly, 1,000 words
(of pages) compressed into one second
of time-I'll be long
robed & long gold haired in
the famous Greek afternoon
of some Greek City
Fame Immortal & they'll
have to find me where they find
the t h n u p f t of my
shroud bags flying
flag yagging Lucien
Midnight back in their
mouths-Gore Vidal'll
be amazed, annoyed-
my words'll be writ in gold
& preserved in libraries like

Song of the Day - 'Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy' by Jack White
This track from Jack White's solo album 'Blunderbuss' has been on repeat on my iPod and in my brain all day.
The message of the song is a classic (possibly autobiographical) southern tale, that the protagonist will always be known as the 'Poor Boy' despite all his achievements and successes as a musician.
This country acoustic ballad with a pinch of attitude contains all the hallmarks of Jack White's talent, his vocals and guitar work perfected. Although I wouldn't describe it as the strongest song on the album, it is still perfectly catchy and a song that any musician wish they wrote.
So I get into the game, but always keep it the same
And I'll be usin' your name, but they'll be yellin' at me "Poor boy, poor boy"
But I'll be happy for you, cause you got nothin' to do
And I'll be singin' the blues, walkin' around singin' "Poor boy, poor boy"
