As you may know, English is not my mother tongue, so I took my own time to write this. However, if you notice some mistake, please let me know and I’ll correct it as soon as I can. Now, let’s go to the main theme of this post.
Ui’s final resolution can look as another abrupt end within this manga, but it’s not as simple as that. In his case, his journey is what really matters, what enrichs his character and what makes his development one of the most brilliant in this story.
Some people blame him for Shio and Rikai’s deaths, as well as the Oggai’s massacre, and criticize that he never paid for the things he have done. But the reality is that Koori already paid what he had to pay; he doesn’t owe anything to anyone.
Have you ever read Gunnm, when Desty Nova tells Gally that Zapan is the personification of her own karma? Well, I truly believe that Furuta was the personification of Ui’s karma; that’s why the time when he suffered the most, when his depression took over him was when he found himself under Furuta’s orders. The reason of their alliance was to force Ui to pay for all the mistakes he commited before and during his work hand by hand with Nimura. And Furuta telling Koori he wasn’t able to bring back to life the people he loved the most was the last (and the most painful) bill Ui needed to pay in order to free himself from his own karma; this is why in this point both part ways: karma on Ui had no reason to be anymore, and this allows him to reappears in the CCG as a new person.
Of course it was! Because after that, Ui tried his best to change himself and avoid karma to come back again. He thanked Mirumo for lending help to the CCG, he accepted Shuu and Nishiki’s help during the fight against Owl. Koori learned. All his bills were paid, finally, and he permitted himself to restart his life from zero.
So, is Koori’s ending fair? Is it realistic?
Absolutely yes. Ui’s ending is not conclusive because he is still learning. He is not going to free himself from that pampered, prejudiced investigator he used to be so easily; but having accepted to work under Tsukiyama’s command, in collaboration with the ghoul who once was his ferocious enemy, it’s an enormous step to him, to his character. And it´s one of the most realistic endings in the whole manga because it’s not so sugary candy like Naki and Miza’s end, but at the same time it’s not so dark or vague like Kurona or Takizawa’s final resolution. Koori Ui’s end it’s balanced. His happiness depends only on himself, and he is in his way to achieve it, just like the rest of us.
