The first time you saw his eyes up close, you were too breathless to speak.
Not because he was handsome (though he was, painfully so) but because of the way his gaze didn’t flinch, he looked intensely, he looked with intention.
He looked at you like silence was language enough, like the weight of everything he couldn’t say was better carried in the shade of his eyes.
Not soft, not pale, not muddled.
But deep, like a forest kept secret, like rain-drenched pine needles in the shadow of dusk. A green that flickered gold at the edges, like something wild and ancient had paused inside him just long enough to look at you.
You could swear they darkened when he was angry.
But glowed, just faintly, when he was gentle.
You didn’t realize it at first, but they were the same color as the shirt your grandmother used to wear when she hugged you in the kitchen.
The same as the moss behind your old house, the one you used to press your hands into just to feel something alive, the same you used to blow bubbles against them just to believe in magic once again.
The same green as the bead from that broken bracelet you never had the heart to throw away.
So when he finally touched your face (slowly, carefully, like he didn’t want to be the first to breathe too loud) you whispered it without thinking.
—Your eyes are the same color as home.
His fingers barely grazed your cheek, but he looked at you like you’d carved something into him.
Like you’d just named something he didn’t know needed naming.
— ...Is that a good thing? — he asked softly.
You smiled, eyes burning.
