Hey Kotyo! I was wondering if you could share some wisdom when it comes to creating a comic?
How do you tackle the task of mentally preparing to draw things like backgrounds and other things that aren't character based?
I ask as I am someone that is incredibly out of practice with drawing backgrounds, and one of the things that's keeping me from wanting to work on a comic is backgrounds.
Sorry if this is a weird question, I just wanted to ask knowing that you are much more knowledgeable in comic making!
backgrounds are.. something I'm still learning to love haha.
but! I would recommend being intentional about it. a bg's main purpose is to show where the characters are (are they in a house? outside somewhere?) &/or the characters positions in relation to each other if that's important.
You can use this as an opening panel to 'set the scene', & once your audience has that info, you don't need to draw it for every panel. You can simplify it for other panels or not even have it at all.
It's up to your own discretion when/where you include it after that. That's something you'll learn for yourself as you get your workflow going.
I think an important thing to keep in mind when planning out your pages is to really consider the purpose of each panel. If your character is conveying important information, you may want the focus to be what they're saying & not kill yourself drawing a detailed bg for that panel lol. If your character is pissed & tossing things around the room, yes you might need to draw some of the bg & items to show the impact & what is being affected.
Also, I highly recommend using 3D assets to help with bgs when you do need something with more detail. Or even at least using 3D primitives just to block out the bg elements helps a lot.
If you have clip studio EX, I've also seen ppl just get stock photos (I usually use unsplash, pexels & pixabay for free stock photos) & use the tool that turns it into outlines to use as a bg.
you'd need to clean it up & edit it a bit obv but it can make a good quick base if you need it.
Work smarter, not harder. Aint nothin wrong with that.
